A well-built Terraria mob farm can generate huge amounts of coins, accessories, Mimic drops, biome loot, Souls, Keys, and other valuable items while keeping most enemies away from you.

This design uses a large Cavern-layer arena, Lava traps, biome blocks, and optional spawn-rate boosts to turn one location into a flexible farming setup.

Terraria Mob Farm Size

The core farm is a large rectangle measuring:

168 blocks wide × 99 blocks tall

It is extremely important to build the entire farm in the:

Cavern layer

not the Underground layer.

You can identify the Cavern layer by:

  • Background changes
  • Depth Meter

Building it at the correct depth is necessary for the intended enemy drops and biome farming.

1. Outline the 168×99 Farm

Start by marking out:

168 blocks horizontally

Then make the total vertical height:

99 blocks

A Ruler can make the measurements much easier.

You can also use Torches as temporary markers so you don’t lose count.

Use Non-Convertible Blocks

The outer border should be built from blocks that cannot be converted by:

  • Corruption
  • Crimson

This helps prevent the farm structure itself from being altered when you switch between artificial biomes.

2. Divide the Farm in Half

Create a horizontal platform through the center using more non-convertible blocks.

Because the total height is 99 blocks, the source divides the farm into:

  • 49 blocks above
  • 49 blocks below

Place the central divider on the:

50th vertical block

This becomes the main runway where enemies will eventually move toward your kill area.

3. Hollow Out the Entire Farm

Now remove virtually everything inside the outer border.

You need to clear:

  • Natural blocks
  • Background walls
  • Unwanted terrain

Keep only the important parts such as:

  • Outer border
  • Central platform

This is the most time-consuming part of construction.

Use Dynamite to Clear It Faster

The source strongly recommends using:

Dynamite

You can buy it from the:

Demolitionist

Sticky Dynamite can also be useful because it stays where you place it.

Start with one half of the farm and remove everything inside the boundaries.

Then repeat for the other half.

4. Stop Enemies From Spawning in the Bottom Section

Once the bottom half is cleared, you need to stop enemies from spawning down there.

There are two methods.

Option 1: Add Background Walls

You can completely wall off the lower section.

This works, but covering such a large area takes a long time.

Option 2: Cover the Bottom With Lava

The easier method is to place Lava along the bottom.

This prevents enemies from spawning there and forces more useful spawns toward the actual farming area.

The source prefers the Lava method because it requires much less work.

5. Build the Central Kill Pyramid

Next, create a pyramid-shaped structure in the middle of the farm.

This funnels ground enemies toward the center.

The source recommends making it approximately:

9 blocks tall

The structure should be high enough that normal enemies can’t easily jump back out.

Hammer the Pyramid Into Slopes

Use a Hammer on the blocks to create smooth upward slopes.

Enemies can then walk up the pyramid toward the central trap.

Add Lava to the Kill Area

Place Lava in the central trap area so enemies walking into it begin taking damage.

Be careful if Water is still nearby during construction.

Water can interfere with the Lava and ruin the trap setup.

6. Clear the Upper Half

Once the bottom is complete, clear the entire upper half too.

Again, remove:

  • Blocks
  • Walls
  • Natural terrain

The goal is to create one large empty spawning area.

7. Add an Extra Bat Trap

Flying enemies such as Bats can cause problems because they may touch the Lava, fly away, and continue occupying the enemy cap.

To reduce this problem, build another small Lava trap about:

9 blocks above the central pyramid

This gives flying enemies another place to become trapped or killed.

It helps stop Bats from filling the mob cap without actually dying.

8. Build a Safe AFK Room

Create a safety room directly underneath the main farm.

The exact design is flexible.

Useful additions include:

  • Solid walls
  • Chests
  • Bed
  • Storage

The source recommends putting a Bed inside so if you die, you respawn directly at the farm.

Chests are also useful because long farming sessions can generate a large amount of loot.

9. Add Dart Traps for Mimics

Mimics are some of the most valuable enemies you can encounter in a Cavern farm.

To automatically activate them, place:

Dart Traps

at the outer edges of the farm facing inward.

Connect them to a:

Timer

The Darts can wake Mimics from their inactive Chest state.

Once activated, the Mimics charge toward your position and can move into the Lava trap.

This is particularly valuable because Mimics can provide:

  • Coins
  • Accessories
  • Useful weapons
  • Other valuable Hardmode drops

10. Add 140 Jungle Blocks for Faster Spawns

One of the biggest improvements is creating a Jungle biome around your AFK station.

The source recommends:

140 Jungle blocks

because the Jungle has higher enemy spawn rates than many ordinary biomes.

A simple way to do this is:

  1. Place Mud Blocks.
  2. Plant Jungle Grass Seeds.
  3. Allow Jungle Grass to spread.

Once enough qualifying blocks are present, the area becomes a Jungle biome and your spawn rates increase.

Increase Spawn Rates Even More

For even faster farming, use:

  • Water Candle
  • Battle Potions

These increase enemy spawn frequency and make the farm significantly more productive.

How to Turn the Farm Into Different Biomes

One of the biggest advantages of this design is that you can change the farm’s biome to target different drops.

Different artificial biomes require different numbers and types of blocks.

Snow / Ice Farm

Place:

1,500 Ice or Snow Blocks

and replace the main spawning platform with:

Ice

This creates an artificial Snow/Ice biome.

Useful drops include:

  • Frozen Key
  • Frozen Turtle Shell
  • Snow biome enemy drops

Desert Farm

Place:

1,500 Sand Blocks

to create an artificial Desert biome.

This can be useful for farming:

  • Desert enemies
  • Desert Key
  • Desert-specific drops

Corruption Farm

Use:

300 Corruption blocks

to create Corruption conditions.

This can be useful for:

  • Souls
  • Corruption enemy drops
  • Biome-specific loot

Crimson Farm

Use:

300 Crimson blocks

to create Crimson conditions.

This provides access to:

  • Crimson enemies
  • Souls
  • Crimson biome loot

Hallow Farm

Use:

300 Hallow blocks

to create a Hallow farming area.

This can be useful for:

  • Souls of Light
  • Hallow enemy drops
  • Rod of Discord farming
  • Other Hallow loot

Watch Out for Biome Mimics

If you’re using Dart Traps while the farm is converted into:

  • Hallow
  • Corruption
  • Crimson

you may activate powerful biome Mimics.

These enemies are significantly stronger than normal Mimics, so be ready for them before leaving the system running.

How to Farm the Rod of Discord

The same mob farm can also be adapted for:

Rod of Discord

farming.

You’ll need several special conditions.

No Background Walls

Make sure there are no walls behind the relevant spawning area.

Remove Nearby NPCs

NPCs nearby can interfere with the required enemy spawning.

Use Pearlstone

Use:

Pearlstone Blocks

as the main runway so Hallow enemies can spawn.

Keep Your Character Moving

The enemies needed for Rod of Discord farming require the player to count as moving.

The useful trick from the source is:

Grappling counts as movement

So you can grapple onto part of your farm while remaining mostly stationary.

That lets the required Hallow enemies continue spawning.

Best Farm Improvements

The basic structure works on its own, but these upgrades make it significantly better.

Jungle Biome

140 Jungle blocks

Increase general spawn rates.

Water Candle

Raises enemy spawn frequency.

Battle Potion

Further increases enemy spawns.

Dart Traps

Automatically wake Mimics so they don’t remain inactive.

Bat Lava Trap

Stops flying enemies from occupying the mob cap.

Bed

Lets you respawn directly at your farming station.

Storage

Keeps long farming sessions organized.

Best Loot to Farm

Depending on which biome you create, this setup can be used for:

  • Coins
  • Mimic accessories
  • Mimic weapons
  • Frozen Turtle Shell
  • Frozen Key
  • Desert Key
  • Souls of Light
  • Souls of Night
  • Corruption loot
  • Crimson loot
  • Hallow loot
  • Rod of Discord
  • General Cavern drops

This makes the farm useful far beyond a single item.

Why This Terraria Mob Farm Works

The design controls where enemies can and cannot spawn.

The large empty Cavern area gives enemies predictable spawning space, while Lava removes unwanted spawn locations from the bottom.

Ground enemies move across the central platform and toward the pyramid.

The slopes guide them into the kill area.

Flying enemies are handled by the secondary Lava trap.

At the same time, biome blocks determine which enemy pool Terraria uses, meaning you can reuse the same farm for multiple loot types instead of building a separate farm for every biome.

Once the 168×99 structure is complete, you can keep modifying the biome around it depending on what you want to farm, turning one large Cavern arena into a flexible source of coins, rare drops, biome Keys, Souls, Mimic loot, and even the Rod of Discord.
