A good AFK farm can be useful from the beginning of a Terraria world all the way into the endgame. This design is built in the Cavern layer and is intended to farm money, resources, Souls, Mimics, and biome-specific enemies while keeping your character safe.

The key is controlling exactly where enemies are allowed to spawn so they are forced toward a central Lava trap instead of filling random caves around you.

1. Find the Cavern Layer

Start by digging down until you reach the:

Cavern layer

You can identify it when the background changes to darker gray stone.

The Cavern layer is important because some resources only become available there.

The source specifically mentions:

  • Souls of Light
  • Souls of Night

in Hardmode.

2. Mark the Center of the Farm

Choose the point where your character will eventually stand.

Mark it with:

  • A few blocks
  • Torches

This center point will be used for all the farm measurements.

3. Clear a Large Area

Use explosives to remove terrain around the center.

Useful options include:

  • Bombs
  • Sticky Bombs
  • Dynamite

The source recommends focusing on making the area:

Wider rather than taller

at first.

Sticky explosives are especially useful for clearing blocks above you.

4. Measure 84 Blocks Left and Right

From the center point, measure:

84 blocks to the left

and:

84 blocks to the right

The source uses Wooden Platforms as temporary measuring markers because they’re easy to remove afterward.

These dimensions are based on Terraria’s enemy spawning distances.

5. Measure 47 Blocks Up and Down

From the same center point, measure:

47 blocks upward

and:

47 blocks downward

Once these measurements are marked, remove blocks in the corners and create the rectangular farming area.

The result is a large rectangle designed around enemy spawn range.

Why These Measurements Matter

Terraria only spawns enemies within specific distances from the player.

By shaping your farm around those distances, you can maximize the number of useful spawns inside the controlled area.

At this point, the farm can already function as an active mob-fighting area.

But for true AFK farming, more preparation is required.

6. Stop Enemies From Spawning Below You

This is one of the most important parts of the entire build.

If caves or small pockets remain underneath the player, enemies can spawn there instead.

Those enemies may become trapped and never reach your kill area.

Because Terraria has a maximum number of enemies that can exist at once, those trapped enemies eventually fill the mob cap.

The result is a farm that seems to stop working.

Fill or Wall Off the Bottom Half

The source recommends covering the entire lower area with:

Player-placed walls

It suggests using a cheap material such as:

Wood Wall

This stops mobs from spawning in front of those walls.

Covering the lower half of the farm removes unwanted spawning pockets and forces enemies to use the upper spawning area instead.

7. Build the Volcano Trap

Now create the central kill structure.

Use a non-corruptible block such as:

Gray Brick

Start with a base roughly:

40 blocks wide

Then continue stacking layers upward while making each layer slightly narrower.

This creates a pyramid or volcano shape.

Volcano Opening

Leave an opening at the top around:

8 blocks wide

Then create a pit approximately:

10 blocks deep

inside the center.

Enemies will climb the slopes and fall into this pit.

Add Lava

Pour Lava into the bottom of the trap.

The goal is to create enough Lava to damage enemies without making the trap unnecessarily large.

This is where most enemies will die.

8. Build a Safe AFK Box

Place your character inside a protected room underneath the trap.

You can customize this area with:

  • Chests
  • Piggy Bank
  • Storage
  • Lighting
  • Other useful furniture

This becomes your main AFK station.

Enemies spawn above, walk toward you, fall into the Lava trap, and die while you remain protected.

9. Add Dart Traps for Mimics

Once Hardmode starts, Mimics can spawn in the farm.

The problem is that normal Mimics stay inactive until:

  • You get close
  • They take damage

To wake them automatically, place:

1 Dart Trap on each side of the farm

Wire both traps to a:

Timer

inside your safety room.

The Darts will hit Mimics and make them move toward the trap.

Beware of Biome Mimics

The same Dart system can also activate:

  • Hallowed Mimics
  • Corrupt Mimics
  • Crimson Mimics

These are much stronger and can potentially kill you while you’re AFK.

The source recommends either:

  • Removing Hallow, Crimson, and Corruption from the farm
  • Turning the Dart Traps off
  • Fighting biome Mimics manually

10. Add Jungle Blocks for Higher Spawn Rates

To increase enemy spawns, place:

80 Jungle blocks

near your safety box.

The source recommends keeping them out of the upper spawn section.

You can use:

  • Jungle Grass
  • Lihzahrd Brick

depending on your progression.

Why Jungle Helps

The source states that Jungle conditions provide roughly:

50% higher spawn rate

than normal Underground areas.

It also gives a higher mob cap.

You’ll know the Jungle effect is active when:

  • Jungle music plays
  • Background changes to Jungle

11. Add a Water Candle

Place a:

Water Candle

near your AFK area.

This further increases enemy spawn rates.

12. Use Battle Potions

Use:

Battle Potions

while farming.

These further increase spawn frequency and help the farm produce enemies more quickly.

13. Build a Biome Switch

The source also includes a simple way to change farm biomes without rebuilding the entire farm.

Place:

200 Stone Blocks

in a rectangle near your safety box.

Keep the rectangle at least:

5 blocks away

from surrounding structures to reduce unwanted spread.

You can surround it with:

Gray Brick

for isolation.

Use the Clentaminator

Spray the Stone rectangle with different Solutions using the:

Clentaminator

This lets you switch between:

  • Normal
  • Hallow
  • Crimson
  • Corruption

without rebuilding the farm.

Add Snow to the Biome Switch

If you want Snow biome enemies, use:

300 Ice Blocks

instead of Stone.

This allows Snow biome conditions.

The source notes that converting those Ice Blocks can create combinations of:

  • Snow enemies
  • Hallow enemies
  • Crimson enemies
  • Corruption enemies

depending on the Solution used.

Full Terraria AFK Farm Build Order

What You Can Farm

Depending on progression and biome setup, this farm can be useful for:

  • Coins
  • General mob drops
  • Mimic loot
  • Souls of Light
  • Souls of Night
  • Jungle enemies
  • Hallow enemies
  • Corruption enemies
  • Crimson enemies
  • Snow enemies
  • Rare biome drops

Why AFK Farms Stop Working

One of the most common problems is leaving caves below or around the player.

Enemies spawn there, become trapped, and fill the mob cap.

Once the cap is full:

New enemies stop spawning

even though the main farm itself is perfectly built.

The solution is to eliminate every unwanted spawn location.

The source does this by covering the bottom half with player-placed walls.

Best Spawn Rate Boosts

For the fastest results, combine:

  • Jungle biome bonus
  • Water Candle
  • Battle Potion

These stack together to dramatically increase enemy spawns.

Best Biome Switching Setup

The Clentaminator switch is useful because you don’t need multiple separate AFK farms.

Instead, one farm can be converted between:

  • Normal
  • Hallow
  • Crimson
  • Corruption
  • Snow combinations

That makes the setup much more flexible throughout progression.

Why Build the Farm Early?

One of the biggest advantages is that you can begin preparing this farm almost immediately after starting a new world.

Early on, it can provide:

  • Money
  • Basic drops
  • Enemy materials

Later, the exact same structure can help farm:

  • Mimics
  • Souls
  • Hardmode biome enemies
  • Rare drops

So instead of building a new farm for every stage of Terraria, this single Cavern setup can continue being useful throughout the entire playthrough.
