Terraria has a huge number of useful farms, and many of them can save you hours of gathering resources manually. Some are especially useful in Skyblock-style worlds, but most of these designs also work extremely well in normal Terraria worlds.
This guide covers more than a dozen farming ideas, including:
- Liquid farms
- Block farms
- Shell farms
- Wood farms
- Herb farms
- Glowing Mushroom farms
- Meteorite farms
- Critter and bait farms
- Statue farms
- Volcano mob farms
- Advanced multi-biome mob farms
1. Liquid Duplicator Farms
Water, Honey, Lava, and Shimmer are useful throughout an entire playthrough.
Instead of constantly collecting more liquid manually, you can build automated liquid duplicators.
These can then be combined into block farms.
Useful Liquid Combinations
Water + Lava
Creates:
Obsidian
Water + Honey
Creates:
Honey Blocks
Lava + Honey
Creates:
Crispy Honey Blocks
Shimmer + Other Liquids
Creates:
Aetherium Blocks
Put the Slower Liquid on Top
The most important rule when combining liquids is positioning.
The source recommends:
Slower liquid on top
and:
Faster liquid on the bottom
For example, when farming Obsidian:
- Lava on top
- Water on bottom
If Water falls onto Lava instead, the Water can refill the mined space before the Lava reaches it, causing the block-generation point to move.
That makes AFK mining much less reliable.
Best Liquid Placement
Obsidian Farm
- Lava on top
- Water on bottom
Crispy Honey Block Farm
- Honey on top
- Lava on bottom
Honey Block Farm
- Honey on top
- Water on bottom
Aetherium Block Farm
Water moves slightly faster than Shimmer.
So use:
- Shimmer on top
- Water on bottom
Because slower liquids duplicate more slowly, it can also help to use multiple duplicators for the slower liquid and only one for the faster liquid.
2. Conveyor Belt Shell Farm
Conveyor Belts can be used to create simple AFK farms.
The basic setup uses:
- Conveyor Belts
- Pressure Plates
- Wire
- Stress Ball
Create a row of Conveyor Belts.
Place Pressure Plates at both ends and wire everything together.
When your character reaches one end, the Pressure Plate reverses the Conveyor direction and sends you back the other way.
This keeps you moving automatically inside the farm.
Beach Shell Farm
Place Sand above your character using Platforms as support.
At the Ocean, Shells can grow on the Sand.
Because standing on Conveyor Belts doesn’t count as character movement for the Stress Ball interaction described in the source, the Stress Ball can continuously swing your tool.
Keep your cursor positioned over the Shell growth area and the Shells can be mined automatically.
This can provide:
- Shells
- Money
- Additional Sand-related resources
3. AFK Wood Farm
The same Conveyor design can be adapted into a tree farm.
Create rows using appropriate growing blocks such as:
- Grass
- Mud
- Snow
- Ash
Then grow trees above them.
Use:
Axe of Regrowth
The Axe of Regrowth is made from:
- Staff of Regrowth
- Copper Axe
The useful part is that it automatically replants Acorns while cutting trees.
With the Conveyor system and Stress Ball running, trees can:
- Grow
- Get chopped
- Drop Wood
- Automatically replant
- Grow again
This creates an AFK Wood farm.
4. AFK Herb Farm
One of the most useful Conveyor farms is an herb farm.
Build:
- Conveyor Belt row
- Planter Boxes above it
- Desired Seeds
Then use either:
- Staff of Regrowth
- Axe of Regrowth
When the plants bloom, your character automatically harvests them while being moved by the Conveyors.
These tools provide extra:
- Seeds
- Herbs
Even better, the source explains that using Regrowth tools does not destroy the harvested herb plant.
That means the plant stays planted and can regrow without requiring manual replanting.
This makes a fully AFK herb farm possible.
5. Passive Glowing Mushroom Farm
Glowing Mushrooms have many uses.
The source mentions:
- Mushroom Staff
- Shroomite
- Healing Potions
- Mana Potions
- Shine Potions
- Blocks
- Furniture
A passive farm becomes possible once you reach early Hardmode and can craft:
- Day Sensor
- Night Sensor
How to Build It
Create a closed box.
At the bottom, place:
Conveyor Belts
Above them, create alternating rows of:
Mushroom Grass
Glowing Mushrooms grow naturally over time.
Then add:
- Day Sensor
- Night Sensor
- Dart Trap
- 2 Teal Pressure Pads
- Actuators
- Honey
- Wiring
How the Automated Harvest Works
Wire:
- Day and Night Sensors to the Dart Trap
- Teal Pressure Pads to the Mushroom Grass rows
Actuate all Mushroom Grass blocks.
Place Honey between the two Teal Pressure Pads to slow the Dart.
At dawn:
- Day Sensor activates.
- Dart Trap fires.
- Dart hits first Teal Pressure Pad.
- Mushroom Grass actuates.
- Mushrooms break.
- Mushrooms fall onto Conveyors.
- Dart slowly travels through Honey.
- Dart hits second Pressure Pad.
- Mushroom Grass becomes solid again.
- Mushrooms begin regrowing.
At dusk, the Night Sensor repeats the process.
Protect It From Falling Stars
Do not leave the system exposed to the sky.
A Falling Star can accidentally trigger a Teal Pressure Pad and disrupt the timing.
Build the farm:
- Underground
- Or under a solid roof
Automatically Collect Mushrooms
At the end of the Conveyor, add:
- Chest
- 5-second Timer
Wire them together.
The Chest can automatically collect the harvested Glowing Mushrooms.
6. Meteorite and Fallen Star Sky Farm
Terraria 1.4.5 added a:
Meteor Storm
The source describes this event as causing Meteors to rain across the world and drop:
Meteorite
The source gives Meteor Storms a:
50% chance
to happen instead of a regular falling Meteor when one is scheduled.
In the Skyblock context described, this appears to increase to:
100%
Build a Conveyor Sky Farm
Create long horizontal rows of:
Conveyor Belts
high in the sky.
These can collect:
- Meteorite
- Fallen Stars
and move the items toward a collection area.
The farm can also act as a shield because Meteors may strike the Conveyor structure instead of the ground below.
Protect the Farm From Meteor Strikes
In normal worlds, a Meteor can potentially damage the Sky Farm.
The source recommends placing:
- Chests
- Hat Racks
- Dressers
- Mannequins
- Other storage-style objects
A storage item prevents Meteors from landing within:
35 tiles
So spacing Chests roughly:
70 blocks apart
can protect the entire structure.
7. Garden Gnome and Critter Farm
Shimmer can create an unsafe version of:
Living Wood Wall
The source calls this:
Overgrown Living Wood Wall
On the surface, Gnomes can spawn in front of it.
Interestingly, the source states that Gnomes are the only hostile enemies that spawn there.
Critters can also spawn, including:
- Bunnies
- Squirrels
That makes this useful for:
- Garden Gnome farming
- Golden Critters
- Food
- Explosive Bunnies
Underground Critter Farm
If you move the same unsafe wall underground, Gnomes no longer spawn.
Instead, you get:
- Mice
- Snails
- Worms
No hostile enemies spawn there.
This makes it a very safe bait farm.
Simple Gnome Farm Setup
You’ll need:
- 1/4-second Timer
- Actuators
- Wire
- Building Blocks
- Conveyors
- Overgrown Living Wood Wall
Build a Conveyor row with unsafe Living Wood Wall above it.
At one end, create a small box with no background walls.
Use actuated blocks and the Timer so Gnomes:
- Enter the box.
- Become exposed to sunlight.
- Turn into Garden Gnome items.
- Get broken by the actuated block.
- Move into your inventory or collection system.
You can also manually swing a Bug Net to capture Critters.
The source notes that the Bug Net does not work with the Stress Ball, so this version isn’t fully AFK without another input method.
8. Slime Statue Farm
Most enemy Statues are not especially useful for farming.
The source highlights two worthwhile options:
- Slime
- Imp
The Slime farm is useful because of:
Slime Staff
which can be a strong early Summoner weapon.
How to Build the Slime Statue Farm
Create a rapid Pressure Plate trigger.
Use:
- Two Pressure Plates
- Wire
- Platforms
The setup pushes your character back and forth rapidly so both Pressure Plates trigger repeatedly.
At the end of the Wire, build a small box containing:
- Slime Statues
- 1 Bucket of Lava
The Statues continuously spawn Slimes and the Lava kills them.
This can be left running while you wait for rare Slime Staff drops.
9. Imp Statue Farm
Imp Statues are useful because Imps can drop:
Obsidian Rose
The design is similar to the Slime Statue farm.
Instead of Lava, use:
- Imp Statue
- Strong piercing Melee weapon
- Stress Ball
Continuously hit the Imps.
The source notes that Imps cannot teleport while taking damage.
As long as every Imp continues being hit, they stay inside the farming area.
10. Classic Volcano Mob Farm
The Volcano is one of the simplest and most versatile Terraria mob farms.
The source describes it as:
- Two sloped sides
- About 10 blocks tall
- Small Lava pit in the center
It requires:
- No wiring
- Only 1 Bucket of Lava
You stand safely underneath the Lava while enemies walk up the slopes and fall into the kill area.
This design can work:
- On Surface
- Underground
- Cavern layer
- In multiple biomes
Terraria Spawn Range
To optimize the farm, you need to understand spawn distance.
According to the source:
Enemies cannot spawn within roughly:
124 × 70 tiles
around the player.
They spawn approximately within:
125 × 71 to 168 × 94 tiles
of the player.
The source recommends clearing a:
169 × 95
area around the AFK point so unwanted blocks don’t provide extra spawn locations.
Then you intentionally add Spawn Platforms exactly where you want enemies to appear.
Use Conveyor Belts on Spawn Platforms
Conveyors can move spawned enemies toward the center faster.
If you want specific enemies, place the required biome block underneath the Conveyors.
For example:
Pearlstone
for Chaos Elemental-related spawning.
The source states that enemies can spawn as though the Conveyor is the block underneath it.
Use Only One Bucket of Lava
Too much Lava can destroy lower-rarity items.
A very thin layer of Lava still damages enemies but preserves loot.
The source specifically recommends:
1 Bucket of Lava
inside the Volcano.
11. Improved Mob Kill Chamber
The classic Volcano works, but it isn’t the fastest killing system.
Enemies take time to:
- Walk up
- Fall
- Land
- Jump around
- Die in Lava
Flying enemies can also touch the Lava and escape.
An improved design guides enemies into a sealed kill chamber.
One-Way Actuated Stair Entrance
Use:
- Solid Blocks
- Actuated Stairs
The stair side behaves like an open passage in one direction.
Enemies can walk into the kill chamber but cannot walk back out.
This also lets you build a ceiling so enemies can’t jump or fly away.
Best Trap Comparison
The source compares several traps.
Weak options include:
- Dart Trap
- Geyser
- Super Dart Trap
- Venom Dart Trap
Better options include:
- Spear Trap
- Flame Trap
But according to the source, both are still slower than Lava.
The only Trap that kills faster than Lava on its own is:
Spiky Ball Trap
Best Kill Combination
The most effective combination tested in the source is:
Lava + Spiky Ball Traps
Adding more trap types doesn’t significantly improve the kill speed because enemies already die too quickly for many other traps to contribute.
12. Advanced High-Efficiency Cavern Mob Farm
For an extremely efficient farm, the source builds near the top of the:
Cavern layer
close to the Underground boundary.
This allows many Cavern spawns while reducing some unwanted enemies.
AFK Chamber
The central AFK area includes:
- Honey
- 3 Heart Statues
- Bast Statue
- Water Candle
- Teleporter
- Garden Gnome
These provide:
- Regeneration
- Defense
- Extra spawn rate
- Easier access
- Increased Luck
Kill Chamber
Build the kill chamber above the AFK spot.
The source uses:
- Small box
- 4-block interior height
- Spiky Ball Traps on ceiling
- Conveyor Belt floor
- Thin Lava layer
Leave a gap for loot to move through the system.
Automatic Loot Transport
Conveyor Belts carry loot from both sides toward the center.
Then a transfer setup puts everything onto one Conveyor line.
This can carry loot:
- Out of the spawn zone
- Toward the base
- Toward storage
At the end, place:
- Chests
- 1-second Timer
Wire them together so the Chests automatically pick up farm loot.
One-Way Enemy Entrances
Line the entrances with:
- Platforms
- Actuators
Hammer them into stairs and actuate them.
This lets enemies enter from one side but stops them from leaving.
Stop Enemies From Jumping
The source shortens the entrance to:
3 blocks high
for most enemies.
However, Rock Golems need a 4-block opening.
Use another actuated stair to preserve the required space while still preventing smaller enemies from jumping.
Build an Upside-Down Volcano
Above the kill chamber, build an inverse Volcano shape.
This guides:
- Bats
- Shellies
- Jumping mobs
- Flying enemies
down into the kill chamber.
Do not build it more than:
30 blocks above the AFK point
otherwise enemies may begin spawning on top of it.
Add Vertical Walls
Build tall walls upward from the tips of the inverse Volcano.
This prevents high-jumping enemies such as Shellies from jumping over the funnel and getting stuck.
Spawn Platforms
Build Conveyor Belt platforms on both sides leading toward the center.
At the ends, add:
25 blocks
of whatever spawn material you want.
Examples mentioned include:
- Stone
- Sandstone
- Ice
- Pearlstone
- Ebonstone
- Crimstone
Because Stone can later be converted with:
- Clentaminator
- Terraformer
it is a flexible default choice.

Automatically Turn the Farm On Only When You’re Inside
Place a:
Weighted Pressure Plate
inside the AFK chamber.
Wire it to the farm Timers using separate Wire colors.
When you enter:
- Timers activate
When you leave:
- Timers stop
This prevents unnecessary mechanisms from running when nobody is using the farm.
Add Jungle for Faster Spawn Rates
You can increase spawn rates by turning the area into:
Jungle
The source recommends:
- Jungle Grass
- Lihzahrd Brick
Either can establish Jungle conditions.
This may introduce some Jungle-specific enemies, but the farm can still combine multiple biome effects.
Make the Farm Multi-Biome
Place a large Stone mass underneath the farm.
Then use:
- Clentaminator
- Terraformer
to convert it.
This lets you change the surrounding biome and influence enemy spawns.
Possible conversions include:
- Hallow
- Corruption
- Crimson
- Desert
- Snow
- Other biome setups
Increase Luck for Better Drops
The source also recommends increasing Luck while farming.
Useful options include:
- Luck Potions
- Lucky Clover
- Horseshoe
- Lucky Coin
- Galaxy Pearl
The Galaxy Pearl is created by throwing:
Pink Pearl
into:
Shimmer
and permanently increases Luck.
Best Terraria Farms From This Setup
Here are the main farms covered:
- Water duplicator
- Lava duplicator
- Honey duplicator
- Shimmer duplicator
- Obsidian farm
- Honey Block farm
- Crispy Honey Block farm
- Aetherium Block farm
- Shell farm
- AFK Wood farm
- AFK Herb farm
- Passive Glowing Mushroom farm
- Meteorite farm
- Fallen Star farm
- Garden Gnome farm
- Critter and bait farm
- Slime Statue farm
- Imp Statue farm
- Volcano mob farm
- Advanced Cavern mob farm
Which Terraria Farm Should You Build First?
If you’re still early in progression, the simplest high-value options are:
- Herb farm
- Wood farm
- Liquid farm
- Volcano mob farm
Later, once you have access to wiring and Hardmode materials, you can upgrade to:
- Automatic Mushroom farm
- Multi-biome mob farm
- Automatic loot storage
- Spiky Ball Trap kill chambers
- Advanced Conveyor systems
The biggest advantage of these farms is automation.
Instead of repeatedly gathering the same materials manually, you can turn common Terraria resources into renewable systems that keep producing while you focus on exploration, bosses, building, and progression.
