Mage is one of Terraria’s most varied classes, with everything from homing projectiles and bouncing Gem Staves to lasers, clouds, explosive spells, and some of the highest-damage endgame weapons available.

A good Mage playthrough is less about grabbing one weapon and using it forever and more about understanding which weapon works best for the situation, how to manage Mana, and when to swap armor and accessories.

This complete Terraria Mage progression guide covers the journey from your first few minutes through Moon Lord, including early-game routes, Gem Staff mechanics, Mana regeneration, boss weapons, armor, accessories, and late-game upgrades.

Starting a Mage Playthrough

At the beginning of the game, there are four main areas worth exploring:

  • Regular Underground caves
  • Underground Desert
  • Snow biome
  • Jungle

For a Mage, normal caves are generally the safest starting route, especially for a newer player.

Before you begin, consider using a Medium or Large world, particularly if you want easier access to some Mage-specific exploration rewards later.

Look for a Wand of Sparking

Check surface Wooden Chests for a Wand of Sparking.

It’s a decent first Mage weapon, but don’t waste too much time searching for it.

If you don’t find one in your first few Chests, move on.

Later, you can take it into the Snow biome, mine Ice, craft Ice Torches, and upgrade it into the Wand of Frosting.

The raw damage increase isn’t huge, but its stronger debuff makes the upgrade much more noticeable.

Craft the Daybloom Staff

While exploring the surface, collect:

  • 3 Daybloom
  • 5 Gel
  • 12 Wood

These can be used to craft the Daybloom Staff.

It fires four short-range, non-piercing projectiles.

The multiple shots help keep enemies away from you, although the Wand of Sparking and Wand of Frosting can be stronger for damage because of their piercing and debuff effects.

Both are solid early Mage options.

Early Mage Route: Underground Caves

Regular caves are usually the best place to begin.

They’re safer than the Jungle or Desert and contain exactly what early Mage builds need:

  • Gems
  • Ore
  • Accessories
  • Minecart tracks
  • Life Crystals

The big goal here is building a Gem Staff + Gem Robe setup.

Terraria 1.4.5 Gem Staff and Robe Effects

Each Gem type now provides its own special effect.

You can mix different Gem Robes and Gem Staves, allowing you to create combinations instead of simply equipping the highest-tier matching pair.

Amethyst

Amethyst grants homing.

This is one of the most consistently useful effects because missed shots are much less likely.

It’s excellent while running and attacking at the same time.

Topaz

Topaz creates a small explosion.

The explosion itself isn’t extremely powerful, but it can help against:

  • Groups
  • Worm enemies
  • Crowded bosses

Its biggest limitation is that the explosion doesn’t pass through walls.

Sapphire

Sapphire splits the projectile into two spinning projectiles.

Each deals:

60% of the weapon’s base damage

If both hit the same target, you’re effectively dealing about:

120% base damage

If only one connects, however, you’re losing damage.

Ruby

Ruby fires:

2 projectiles for the Mana cost of 1

This effectively doubles your attack frequency.

Emerald

Emerald:

  • Increases projectile speed
  • Causes projectiles to stick to blocks temporarily
  • Allows one pierce

The lingering projectiles can occasionally hit enemies later, making Emerald surprisingly useful in caves.

Amber

Amber causes projectiles to:

  • Bounce
  • Pierce twice

This makes Amber extremely strong in underground and enclosed areas where shots can repeatedly bounce back toward enemies.

Diamond

Diamond increases projectile size and allows:

1 pierce

Diamond Staff also has the highest base damage among the standard Gem Staves, making it one of the strongest foundations for mixed Robe builds.

Matching Robe Bonus

If your Gem Robe matches your Gem Staff, the Staff receives a flat:

+4 damage

That doesn’t necessarily mean matching is always optimal.

Different robe effects can outperform the matching bonus depending on the fight.

Best Early Gem Staff Combination

Testing against King Slime found one particularly strong combination:

Amethyst Robe + Diamond Staff

The Diamond Staff’s high base damage combined with Amethyst’s homing produces very reliable damage.

Other strong combinations include:

  • Emerald Robe + Diamond Staff
  • Topaz Robe + Diamond Staff
  • Amethyst Robe + Emerald Staff
  • Emerald Robe + Emerald Staff
  • Sapphire Robe + Amber Staff
  • Sapphire Robe + Emerald Staff
  • Amethyst Robe + Amber Staff

The best setup can change depending on the environment.

Best for Open Boss Fights

Amethyst’s homing is extremely consistent.

Best Underground

Amber becomes much stronger because bouncing shots can repeatedly hit enemies.

Best for Crowds

Topaz explosions and Sapphire splitting can be useful against several enemies at once.

Diamond Staff Limitation

Diamond Staff requires Platinum.

If your world generated Gold instead, this can be inconvenient because you can’t simply Shimmer Gold into Platinum.

You may need to:

  • Fish
  • Use an Extractinator
  • Obtain Platinum through another source

If that’s too much trouble, Amber and Emerald combinations remain excellent.

How to Craft Gem Robes

You’ll need:

  • Gems
  • A basic Robe
  • Loom access

Looms can be found naturally or crafted through a Sawmill.

While mining Gems, use Spelunker Potions when possible.

They’re particularly effective when traveling along Minecart tracks because you can cover large underground areas quickly.

Keep an eye out for Gem caves as well.

Craft a Robe Before the Staff if Necessary

If you only have enough materials for one piece initially, consider crafting the Robe first.

Wearing a Gem Robe makes the rare enemy Tim significantly more likely to spawn.

The source gives the increase as:

5× higher spawn chance

Kill Tim for the Wizard Hat, completing a useful early Mage armor setup.

Alternative Early Mage Route: Underground Desert

The Desert is a more dangerous and specialized Mage route.

The main Gem here is:

Amber

Amber is one of the higher-tier Gems and can appear abundantly in the Underground Desert.

You can also place Desert Fossils into an Extractinator to obtain more Amber.

Thunder Zapper

In the deeper Underground Desert, around the Lava layer, you can look for the Thunder Zapper.

It’s a strong single-target Mage weapon.

After the Gem Staff updates, it doesn’t completely dominate Diamond or Amber builds, but it can still outperform many Gem Staff combinations against a single target.

The downside is danger.

Underground Desert enemies hit hard early, and Cactus Boulders are everywhere.

Bring a ranged weapon so you can trigger dangerous Boulders from a distance.

If you’re dying repeatedly while searching for the Thunder Zapper, return to normal caves and build a Gem Staff instead.

Other Useful Desert Items

The Underground Desert can also provide:

  • Bast Statues
  • Magic Conch
  • Ancient Chisel
  • Digtoise

The major downside is that you’re unlikely to find the same double-jump options available in other underground biomes.

Alternative Route: Snow Biome

The Snow biome gives you a nice mixture of:

  • Gems
  • Fast boots
  • Double-jump accessories
  • Mage weapons

Gem generation can be more inconsistent than ordinary caves, but the mobility loot is excellent.

Glacier Fang

Ice Chests can contain the Glacier Fang.

You can rapidly click it for weak shots, but the better option is generally to:

Hold the attack and fully charge it

Its charged projectile deals much better damage.

It works well against:

  • Single targets
  • Groups

Its main weakness is that the charge time can make aiming awkward despite the projectile moving quickly.

Alternative Route: Jungle

The Jungle is the most dangerous of the four early routes, but it also gives you excellent Mage equipment.

Your biggest early reward is Jungle Armor.

Gather:

  • Jungle Spores
  • Stingers from Hornets or Spiked Jungle Slimes
  • Vines from Man Eaters

Ancient Cobalt Armor can substitute for corresponding Jungle Armor pieces because the game treats them as equivalent.

Nature’s Gift

Look for Nature’s Gift while exploring.

It’s an important Mage accessory component later.

Finding more than one isn’t a bad idea.

You won’t unlock its full crafting potential until after the Goblin Army and Goblin Tinkerer, but it’s worth collecting early.

Mystic Bloom

You can craft the Mystic Bloom with:

  • 1 Nature’s Gift
  • 2 Moonglow
  • 3 Vines
  • 7 Rich Mahogany

It fires short-range homing attacks.

Its damage is fairly strong and can compete with higher-tier Gem Staff combinations.

The firing pattern is slightly awkward, so it works best as a weapon you fire while retreating from enemies.

Jungle Armor or Mystic Robes usually make more sense with it than Gem Robes.

Corruption and Crimson Mage Items

Once you’re equipped, you can break up to two Shadow Orbs or Crimson Hearts and potentially find useful Mage gear.

In Corruption worlds, look for:

  • Vilethorn
  • Band of Starpower

In Crimson worlds, look for:

  • Crimson Rod
  • Panic Necklace

Getting two Band of Starpower-type accessories can be useful for later upgrades.

Goblin Army Warning

If you’ve reached:

200 Health

and have broken the necessary Orbs or Hearts, the Goblin Army can begin invading.

This can be rough for an under-equipped Mage, so don’t rush Orb-breaking if your character is still weak.

Should You Farm the Demon Scythe Early?

The Demon Scythe is one of the best pre-Hardmode Mage weapons.

But don’t immediately rush to the Underworld for it.

Its drop chance from Demons is:

Under 3%

and Demons aren’t constantly available.

You’re farming a dangerous area for one specific rare weapon, so it’s usually smarter to wait until you have better equipment.

Get a Celestial Magnet

If you find a Gravitation Potion, search Floating Islands for a Celestial Magnet.

This is particularly useful for Mage builds because it increases Mana Star pickup range.

The source notes that it doesn’t appear in chests on Small worlds, making Medium or Large worlds preferable for this progression route.

Mage Armor Before Early Bosses

Before fighting King Slime or Eye of Cthulhu, aim to have at least a Robe or Staff around the:

  • Emerald
  • Amber
  • Ruby
  • Diamond

tier.

Craft the strongest defensive leggings you can with leftover Ore.

Mystic Robes and Magic Hat from the Traveling Merchant are alternatives, but Gem Robes became much stronger after their update.

Understanding Mana in Terraria 1.4.5

Mana management changed significantly.

Previously, reaching zero Mana completely stopped your attacks.

Now you can continue attacking at:

40% attack speed

while at zero Mana.

That’s usually inefficient, so only rely on it if you’re just one or two hits away from finishing an enemy.

Mana Potions and Mana Sickness

The default quick-Mana hotkey is:

J

Drinking a Mana Potion inflicts:

5 seconds of Mana Sickness

Each second of Mana Sickness reduces magic damage by:

5%

So immediately after drinking a Mana Potion, you receive:

25% reduced magic damage

That penalty decreases by 5% each second.

Mana Sickness can stack up to:

10 seconds

if you’re repeatedly drinking weaker Mana Potions.

Natural Mana Regeneration Is Much Better Now

Mana regeneration no longer has the old delay.

You can regenerate Mana even while actively using magic weapons.

Because of this, repeatedly drinking Mana Potions isn’t nearly as necessary as it used to be.

Stand Still to Regenerate Mana Faster

Standing still:

Doubles Mana regeneration

This applies to regeneration bonuses too.

Whenever you’re in a safe window during a fight, briefly stopping can restore Mana surprisingly quickly.

Star in a Bottle

Craft a Star in a Bottle using a Fallen Star and Bottle.

Standing nearby provides:

5 Mana per second

It’s excellent for boss arenas.

Arcane Crystal

Shimmer a Mana Crystal to obtain an Arcane Crystal.

Using it permanently increases your Mana regeneration slightly.

Mana Regeneration Band

After rescuing the Goblin Tinkerer, combine:

  • Band of Starpower
  • Band of Regeneration

to make the Mana Regeneration Band.

It provides increased Mana regeneration while retaining the health regeneration bonus.

Crimson players can eventually convert a Panic Necklace into a Band of Starpower through the relevant crafting route.

Restoration Shield

After defeating Skeletron, the Mana Regeneration Band can be combined through another upgrade path involving a Cobalt Shield to create the Restoration Shield.

This is one of the most useful Mage accessories described in the guide.

Using it alongside the Mana Regeneration Band produces extremely strong Mana regeneration.

Standing still doubles the benefit even further.

Mana Regeneration Potion

Mana Regeneration Potions are another excellent option.

Testing suggested that one potion provides roughly comparable regeneration to a Mana Regeneration Band or one of its upgrades.

You can either:

  • Use it to free an accessory slot
  • Stack it with your accessories for even faster regeneration

If you’re using a Mana Regeneration Potion, avoid automatically chugging Mana Potions through Mana Flower-style accessories.

Magic Power Potion

Magic Power Potions don’t increase regeneration.

They increase your magic damage, making them useful for difficult boss fights.

Mana Stars From Enemies

Weak enemies and boss minions have a high chance to drop Mana Stars.

The guide gives the chance as:

Slightly over 50%

Picking up a Mana Star also grants:

50% increased damage for 2 seconds

This makes boss minions surprisingly useful to Mages.

A Celestial Magnet makes collecting the Stars much easier.

Star Statues

After Skeletron, wire Star Statues to a:

¼-second timer

for extra Mana Stars during boss fights.

This is particularly valuable against bosses without many minions.

Mage Accessory Reforges

The Arcane modifier gives:

+20 Mana

but don’t automatically reforge every accessory to Arcane.

In most builds, modifiers focusing on:

  • Defense
  • Damage
  • Critical strike chance

will provide more value once your Mana regeneration is strong enough.

King Slime Mage Strategy

King Slime’s smaller Slimes can be annoying because they’re relatively tanky on higher difficulties.

Place Blue Slime Banners around your arena if you have them.

Strong options include:

  • Emerald Staff
  • Amber Staff
  • Diamond Staff
  • Amethyst Robe combinations
  • Glacier Fang
  • Thunder Zapper

Piercing Gem Staves are useful because they can damage King Slime and his minions simultaneously.

Eye of Cthulhu Mage Strategy

The first phase is relatively comfortable because the Servants provide Mana Stars.

During the Eye’s transition into phase two, it summons several more Servants.

Consider leaving some alive temporarily so you can kill them later for Mana Stars when necessary.

This is less important after the Mana regeneration changes, but it can still help.

Eater of Worlds Mage Strategy

The best possible weapon here is the:

Vilethorn

It:

  • Pierces infinitely
  • Passes through blocks

which makes it exceptionally effective against a segmented worm boss.

If you don’t get one, use piercing Gem Staff effects.

Topaz Robe paired with a stronger Staff can also perform well because the explosions hit multiple segments.

Examples include:

  • Ruby Staff + Topaz Robe
  • Amber Staff + Topaz Robe
  • Diamond Staff + Topaz Robe

On Expert or Master Mode, consider fighting underground to reduce the effectiveness of Vile Spit attacks.

Using a Slime Saddle can help you bounce away from the boss and reduce contact damage.

Brain of Cthulhu Mage Strategy

The Crimson Rod provides free damage by creating a damaging cloud.

During phase one, Topaz Robes are useful because their explosions help control Creepers.

Strong Staff choices include:

  • Diamond
  • Emerald
  • Ruby
  • Amber

During phase two, switch toward single-target damage.

The Thunder Zapper performs well because its knockback helps keep the Brain away.

Amethyst Robes are another excellent option because the homing projectiles automatically identify and attack the real Brain among its clones.

On higher difficulties, that can save you from having to visually identify the correct target.

Keep a few Mana Potions available for phase two if necessary; maintaining constant pressure can be more important than avoiding Mana Sickness entirely.

Queen Bee and Deerclops

Both are optional for Mage progression.

Queen Bee

The main Mage reward is the Bee Gun.

It’s usable but no longer particularly exceptional compared with updated Gem Staves.

Amethyst homing is useful against Queen Bee because she moves quickly.

Deerclops

The main Mage reward is Weather Pain.

Treat it as a support weapon:

  1. Cast the tornado.
  2. Switch to your main weapon.
  3. Let the tornado deal passive damage.

The Thunder Zapper performs especially well against Deerclops.

Meteor Armor and Space Gun

After defeating your evil biome boss, a Meteor can eventually appear.

Meteor Armor’s raw stats aren’t necessarily better than Jungle Armor, but its set bonus makes the Space Gun consume no Mana.

This gives you something valuable:

A weapon that continues dealing magic damage while your Mana regenerates.

That makes Meteor Armor particularly useful for:

  • Damage-focused builds
  • Mobility-focused builds
  • Players struggling with Mana management

Space Gun Range Bonus

The Space Gun becomes stronger over distance.

Approximately every:

15.5 tiles

its damage increases by:

1–2 damage

The increase stops after around:

78 tiles

for a maximum bonus around:

5–10 damage

or roughly:

25–50%

Realistically, most fights won’t happen at maximum range, but it’s still a useful mechanic.

Skeletron Mage Strategy

Useful weapons include:

  • Space Gun
  • Thunder Zapper
  • Mystic Bloom
  • Piercing Gem Staves
  • Amethyst Robes for homing

Thunder Zapper becomes especially strong after the hands are destroyed.

If the Traveling Merchant sells a Gray Zapinator, it’s also worth considering.

With Meteor Armor it consumes zero Mana and has rare chaotic effects capable of producing absurd damage.

Don’t rely on the rare high-damage roll, but the weapon is still powerful and fun.

Dungeon Mage Weapons

After defeating Skeletron, the Dungeon becomes one of the best places for Mage progression.

Important weapons include:

  • Water Bolt
  • Magic Missile
  • Aqua Scepter

Water Bolt

Water Bolt projectiles:

  • Bounce up to 5 times
  • Pierce up to 9 enemies
  • Last up to 30 seconds

It’s excellent in cramped areas because you can fill rooms with bouncing projectiles.

Magic Missile

Magic Missile offers powerful homing.

You can either:

  • Spam attacks and let it home automatically
  • Hold the attack and manually guide the projectile

Its explosion can hit enemies behind thin walls and damage groups around the main target.

Aqua Scepter

Aqua Scepter is excellent against both single targets and crowds.

Its arcing attack can make aiming tricky, but its damage is excellent.

A strange quirk mentioned in the source is that Sluggish can outperform Mythical for this particular weapon, even though Mythical is generally the preferred Mage weapon modifier.

Underworld Mage Weapons

Before the Wall of Flesh, loot Shadow Chests for upgrades.

Notable weapons include:

  • Flame Lash
  • Flower of Fire

The Flower of Fire becomes especially valuable immediately after entering Hardmode.

Also consider farming:

Demon Scythe

It’s hard to aim but can produce devastating damage while retreating because the projectiles linger in the path of pursuing enemies.

Wall of Flesh Mage Strategy

The two main recommended weapons are:

  • Aqua Scepter
  • Demon Scythe

Hellbridge Strategy

If you’ve built a flat Hellbridge, the Demon Scythe works extremely well because you can continuously fire backward while running.

Water Walking Strategy

If you’re using:

  • Water Walking Potion
  • Featherfall Potion

instead of a traditional bridge, the Aqua Scepter is extremely strong while the Wall remains in range.

Try to attack the lower eye around Lava pools, where the weapon can take advantage of its interaction with the environment.

Backup Weapons

Meteor Armor users can bring:

  • Space Gun
  • Gray Zapinator

The Flower of Fire can help finish the final portion of the fight because of its high single-target damage, although switching weapons while panicking can be more trouble than it’s worth.

Entering Hardmode as a Mage

The Flower of Fire becomes an excellent early Hardmode enemy killer.

Use:

  • Flower of Fire for isolated ground enemies
  • Aqua Scepter or Laser Rifle for distant and flying enemies
  • Demon Scythe against multiple enemies or when retreating

If the Wall of Flesh drops the Laser Rifle, it can replace the Aqua Scepter for general combat.

Early Hardmode Mage Armor

Your main ore armor target should be:

  • Adamantite
  • Titanium

The source prefers Adamantite.

Titanium can be Shimmered into Adamantite if desired.

Forbidden Armor is another option, but it’s a mixed Mage/Summoner set and can be annoying to farm.

Find the Wizard

Locate the Wizard underground as soon as possible.

At minimum, buy the Crystal Ball.

Its buff provides:

  • +5% magic damage
  • +2% critical strike chance
  • +20 Mana
  • -2% Mana usage

The Ice Rod is primarily a utility item and isn’t especially important as a combat weapon.

Sorcerer Emblem

If the Wall of Flesh didn’t drop the Sorcerer Emblem, Shimmer the Emblem you received until you get the Mage version.

Expert and Master players should strongly consider using the extra accessory slot for it.

Early Hardmode Mage Weapons

There are a huge number of viable options.

Notable ones include:

  • Golden Shower
  • Cursed Flames
  • Crystal Storm
  • Sky Fracture
  • Meteor Staff
  • Crystal Serpent
  • Crystal Vile Shard
  • Poison Staff
  • Frost Staff
  • Flower of Frost
  • Magic Dagger
  • Medusa Head
  • Spirit Flame
  • Shadowflame Hex Doll
  • Blood Thorn
  • Nimbus Rod
  • Lightning Strike

Golden Shower

On Crimson worlds, Golden Shower is one of the most valuable Mage weapons available.

It applies a defense-reducing debuff that remains useful far beyond early Hardmode.

Keep it for future bosses even after its direct damage becomes outdated.

Cursed Flames

Cursed Flames works like a stronger Flower of Fire and is solid against single targets.

Lightning Strike

Lightning Strike requires:

  • 24 Adamantite Bars
  • 20 Souls of Night
  • Thunder Zapper

It’s a cursor-targeted lightning weapon.

After attacking, you can move your cursor for roughly one second and redirect where the lightning goes.

If your cursor passes over an enemy, the lightning homes onto it.

It applies Hellfire and another visual Zap effect.

Nimbus Rod

Whenever it rains, farm Nimbuses for a Nimbus Rod.

Its drop chance is:

6.67%

This is one of the best Mage support weapons in Terraria.

Cast your Clouds, then switch to another weapon while they continue dealing damage.

Mana Cloak

The Mana Cloak became more interesting after the Mana changes.

Every:

5 seconds

it can fire a Star at an enemy.

That Star can turn into a weaker Mana Star that restores:

50 Mana

and activates the Mana Surge damage bonus:

+50% damage for 2 seconds

It also retains the Star Cloak’s retaliation effect when you take damage.

Mechanical Boss Mage Progression

The three Mechanical Bosses require different weapon priorities.

Destroyer

Spawn Destroyer while standing on an elevated platform so it doesn’t initially appear underground.

As soon as it spawns, move toward the coiled body.

Best Option: Life Drain

If you’re in a Crimson world and have Life Drain, target the center of the coil.

Life Drain attacks around your cursor, so placement matters.

Used correctly, it can absolutely shred Destroyer.

Other Strong Weapons

  • Meteor Staff
  • Crystal Vile Shard
  • Magical Harp
  • Tome of Infinite Wisdom

Meteor Staff is safer.

Crystal Vile Shard can deal slightly more damage but requires staying dangerously close.

The Probes can sometimes block Meteor Staff shots, which reduces its effectiveness.

Twins

The Twins drop materials needed for important Mage upgrades, so they’re a reasonable first Mechanical Boss.

Place a Nimbus Cloud where you expect Spazmatism to hover and move vertically underneath or around it.

Strong weapons include:

  • Golden Shower
  • Cursed Flames
  • Killing Deck
  • Spirit Flame
  • Frost Staff
  • Flower of Frost
  • Sky Fracture
  • Meteor Staff
  • Zapinator

The strongest recommendations are:

  • Golden Shower
  • Spirit Flame

Flower of Frost can deal excellent damage but is difficult to aim.

Skeletron Prime

The Restoration Shield is especially useful here because knockback immunity can save you from being repeatedly thrown around.

Most of the Twins weapons also work well against Prime.

You can also place Nimbus Clouds and circle around the boss so he remains underneath them.

After One Mechanical Boss

Once you’ve defeated one Mech, you can access additional Old One’s Army progression.

The Tome of Infinite Wisdom is particularly useful against Destroyer.

Apprentice Armor also becomes available, offering a mixed Mage/Summoner option with strong magic critical-strike bonuses.

After All Mechanical Bosses

Once the Mechs are down, prepare for Plantera.

Mine enough Chlorophyte for:

  • Chlorophyte Armor if desired
  • Venom Staff progression

Also craft the Rainbow Rod from Souls of Sight.

Rainbow Rod is particularly good while navigating the Hardmode Jungle.

Celestial Emblem Damage Stacking

You can defeat the Wall of Flesh again to obtain another Emblem and eventually craft the Avenger Emblem.

If you have a Celestial Magnet, upgrade toward the Celestial Emblem.

Using Sorcerer Emblem + Celestial Emblem can provide around:

30% increased damage

If you don’t want to sacrifice the Magnet, Sorcerer + Avenger provides around:

27%

Plantera Mage Strategy

During phase one, circle around Plantera.

Recommended weapons:

  • Venom Staff
  • Rainbow Rod
  • Golden Shower as support

Fire Golden Shower periodically to lower Plantera’s defense.

The Venom Staff generally deals better direct damage but requires you to stay closer.

Phase Two

Venom Staff remains the recommendation because:

  • It pierces
  • Its spread helps clear tentacles
  • It can continue hitting Plantera simultaneously

Rainbow Rod tends to lock onto tentacles, reducing direct boss damage.

Plantera can drop:

  • Nettle Burst
  • Leaf Blower
  • Wasp Gun

They’re usable, but none is essential enough to justify repeatedly farming Plantera.

Post-Plantera Dungeon Mage Progression

After Plantera, return to the Dungeon.

Your main targets are:

  • Shadowbeam Staff
  • Inferno Fork
  • Spectre Staff
  • Ectoplasm

Each Staff has close to a:

10% drop chance

from its associated enemy.

Enemy spawning depends on Dungeon wall type:

  • Necromancers → Brick walls → Shadowbeam Staff
  • Diabolists → Tiled walls → Inferno Fork
  • Ragged Casters → Slab walls → Spectre Staff

Shadowbeam Staff and Inferno Fork are generally more important than Spectre Staff.

Spectre Armor

Farm Dungeon Spirits for Ectoplasm and combine it with Chlorophyte to craft Spectre Armor.

Make both:

  • Spectre Mask
  • Spectre Hood

Keep one in your vanity slot for quick swapping.

Spectre Mask

The Mask produces damaging orbs when your magic attacks hit enemies.

Use this for normal maximum damage.

Spectre Hood

The Hood generates healing orbs from your magic attacks.

The downside is severe:

40% reduced damage

It also doesn’t provide extra Mana.

Don’t permanently wear the Hood.

Instead:

  1. Fight with Spectre Mask.
  2. Swap to Hood when your health becomes low.
  3. Deal damage until you’ve healed.
  4. Switch back to Mask.

This is one of Mage’s strongest survivability tricks.

Hardmode Dungeon Support Weapons

Magnet Sphere

This is relatively easy to farm from common Dungeon enemies and works well as passive support damage.

Rainbow Gun

Rainbow Gun is excellent but requires the extremely rare Hallowed Key.

It’s powerful, but generally not worth specifically grinding for unless you happen to get the Key.

Frost Moon Mage Weapons

Frost Moon contains several excellent Mage upgrades.

Razor Pine

Dropped by Everscreams.

The source lists roughly:

6–30% drop chance

depending on the wave.

Razor Pine is:

  • Easy to use
  • Strong at medium range
  • Effective in almost every situation

It’s one of the safest late-game Mage weapons.

Blizzard Staff

Dropped by Ice Queens at roughly:

15–31%

depending on wave progression.

Blizzard Staff has enormous DPS potential.

Its disadvantages:

  • Requires open space
  • Requires good aim

If you learn to aim it consistently, it’s one of Mage’s strongest pre-Lunar weapons.

Pumpkin Moon

The main Mage reward is the Bat Scepter.

The source gives roughly:

6–12.5% drop chance

from Pumpking depending on wave.

It’s good, but Pumpking’s larger loot pool makes it frustrating to farm.

Razor Pine is generally easier and at least as useful.

Golem Mage Strategy

Spectre Armor is strongly recommended.

Useful weapons include:

  • Inferno Fork
  • Toxic Flask
  • Shadowbeam Staff
  • Blizzard Staff
  • Razor Pine

Blizzard Staff can destroy Golem but may force you into dangerous positioning because you need to stay relatively low.

Razor Pine provides a safer middle ground.

After defeating Golem, look for:

  • Heat Ray
  • Staff of Earth

Neither necessarily beats Blizzard Staff with perfect aim, but both are useful and easier to handle.

Martian Madness

The Martian Saucer can drop the Laser Machinegun at around:

16.7%

It’s fun but not essential.

The Martian Blaster is another rare option.

More importantly, the newer Arc Surge has a much lower drop chance from Martian Saucers:

2%

but is considered one of the strongest endgame Mage weapons and can compete with Lunar Pillar gear.

Old One’s Army Tier 3

You can also farm:

  • Betsy’s Wrath
  • Dark Artist Armor

Betsy’s Wrath

This essentially acts like a more powerful alternative to Golden Shower, although it’s less convenient to aim.

Dark Artist Armor

Compared with Spectre Armor, it provides strong Mage stats while also improving sentries and summons.

The source highlights benefits including:

  • Same general defense and damage level
  • +8% magic critical strike chance
  • +12% movement speed
  • 2% additional Mana cost reduction
  • Up to 5 sentries with War Table active

It lacks Spectre healing and damaging orbs, so it’s a niche build, but it’s interesting for Mage/Sentry hybrids.

Duke Fishron Mage Strategy

Duke Fishron drops two excellent Mage weapons:

  • Razorblade Typhoon
  • Bubble Gun

Before obtaining them, strong options include:

  • Blizzard Staff
  • Razor Pine
  • Staff of Earth
  • Heat Ray
  • Shadowbeam Staff
  • Inferno Fork
  • Rainbow Rod

Blizzard Staff is the strongest when aimed well.

Heat Ray becomes particularly useful in phase three when there are fewer Sharkrons and bubbles blocking your shots.

Razorblade Typhoon

This is one of Terraria’s most popular Mage weapons.

Its homing makes it useful in almost every late-game scenario.

Bubble Gun

Bubble Gun deals absurd damage at close range.

Its limitation is exactly that:

Very short range

If you defeat Duke unusually early, Bubble Gun can tear through bosses such as:

  • Mechanical Bosses
  • Plantera
  • Golem

but fighting Duke that early is not recommended for newer players.

Empress of Light Mage Progression

The main Mage drop is Nightglow.

It behaves similarly to Razorblade Typhoon but attacks in multiple directions.

Advantages:

  • Excellent crowd control
  • Strong homing
  • Attacks enemies around you

Disadvantages:

  • Shorter range
  • Weaker knockback

Stellar Tune

Stellar Tune has only a:

5% drop chance

It’s fun and works reasonably against Duke Fishron or Cultist, but isn’t important enough to specifically farm for.

Against Empress herself, Razorblade Typhoon is one of the best choices if you already have it.

Alternatives include:

  • Blizzard Staff
  • Spectre Staff
  • Shadowbeam Staff
  • Razor Pine
  • Venom Staff for extra debuff damage

Lunatic Cultist Mage Strategy

Razorblade Typhoon and Nightglow work well, but Cultist receives:

25% reduced damage

from certain homing attacks.

Don’t overthink the entire damage-reduction list; it’s inconsistent across weapon types.

Just remember that your usual homing weapons may perform slightly worse.

When you’re close enough, Bubble Gun can produce much higher damage.

Avoid support weapons that attack automatically because they can hit the wrong Cultist clone and make the fight more difficult.

Other strong options include:

  • Razor Pine
  • Blizzard Staff
  • Shadowbeam Staff
  • Spectre Staff
  • Heat Ray

Bring Inferno Fork or Staff of Earth in case the Ancient Vision/dragon-type summon appears after hitting the wrong clone.

Celestial Pillars Mage Strategy

Your first target should usually be:

Nebula Pillar

because it provides the Mage-specific Fragments.

Strong weapons for Pillar combat include:

  • Nightglow
  • Razorblade Typhoon
  • Arc Surge
  • Boulder Staff
  • Razor Pine
  • Blizzard Staff
  • Inferno Fork
  • Shadowbeam Staff

Use support weapons such as Nimbus Rod on one side of the arena to reduce pressure.

Quickly Destroying a Pillar

Once the shield is nearly down, place Nimbus Clouds directly over the Pillar.

With Spectre Mask equipped, these can continue dealing substantial damage even if you die immediately afterward.

For direct Pillar damage, strong choices include:

  • Bubble Gun
  • Blizzard Staff

Nebula Pillar Enemies

Stay mobile and avoid lingering on the ground.

Some Nebula enemies launch hard-to-see purple projectiles that blend into the background.

A useful movement pattern is:

  • Stay airborne
  • Move left and right
  • Change elevation slightly

This naturally avoids many slow homing projectiles.

Nebula Blaze

Once the Nebula Pillar is destroyed, craft:

Nebula Blaze

This becomes your main weapon for Moon Lord.

Nebula Arcanum

Nebula Arcanum is more of a crowd-control and support weapon.

Its large orb:

  • Can hit up to three times
  • Bursts into smaller damaging shards
  • Creates additional surrounding orbs
  • Works particularly well when fired into dense enemy groups

It’s excellent for the other Pillars but less essential for Moon Lord.

Moon Lord Mage Strategy

Against Moon Lord, mobility and accessories become just as important as weapon choice.

Your primary recommendation is:

Nebula Blaze

It’s reliable, powerful, and easy to aim while focusing on dodging.

Other Weapons

You can also use:

  • Blizzard Staff
  • Bubble Gun
  • Stellar Tune
  • Golden Shower
  • Betsy’s Wrath

Blizzard Staff has excellent DPS but can be hard to land consistently.

Bubble Gun requires getting dangerously close.

Golden Shower or Betsy’s Wrath can be fired occasionally to lower defense, although the benefit may not justify interrupting your main attack.

For most players:

Just dodge and keep firing Nebula Blaze.

Endgame Mage Gear

After defeating Moon Lord, you can craft:

Nebula Armor

The guide notes that Spectre Armor can still be extremely competitive on the highest difficulties because of its healing utility.

Moon Lord also drops two major Mage weapons.

Last Prism

Last Prism is extremely powerful and particularly fun if you build around large Mana reserves.

Lunar Flare

Lunar Flare is another strong endgame weapon.

At this stage you’ve already finished the main progression, so its practical progression uses are limited.

Recommended Mage Progression Summary

If you want a simplified route, this is a strong path to follow.

Early Game

Aim for:

  • Wand of Sparking / Wand of Frosting
  • Daybloom Staff
  • Gem Robe
  • Gem Staff
  • Wizard Hat

Prioritize:

  • Amethyst effects for homing
  • Diamond Staff for raw power
  • Amber in enclosed areas

Pre-Boss to Evil Boss

Look for:

  • Thunder Zapper
  • Mystic Bloom
  • Vilethorn or Crimson Rod
  • Mana regeneration accessories

Pre-Skeletron

Consider:

  • Jungle Armor
  • Meteor Armor
  • Space Gun
  • Gray Zapinator if available

Post-Skeletron

Get:

  • Magic Missile
  • Aqua Scepter
  • Water Bolt
  • Mechanic access
  • Star Statue setup

Wall of Flesh

Use:

  • Aqua Scepter
  • Demon Scythe
  • Space Gun / Gray Zapinator as backups

Early Hardmode

Upgrade into:

  • Adamantite/Titanium Armor
  • Sorcerer Emblem
  • Golden Shower or Cursed Flames
  • Meteor Staff
  • Sky Fracture
  • Nimbus Rod
  • Mana Cloak

Mechanical Bosses

Destroyer:

  • Life Drain
  • Meteor Staff
  • Crystal Vile Shard

Twins:

  • Golden Shower
  • Spirit Flame
  • Meteor Staff

Prime:

  • Same core weapons
  • Restoration Shield strongly recommended

Post-Mechs

Get:

  • Rainbow Rod
  • Venom Staff
  • Chlorophyte equipment

Post-Plantera

Farm:

  • Spectre Armor
  • Shadowbeam Staff
  • Inferno Fork
  • Magnet Sphere

Late Game

Strong targets include:

  • Razor Pine
  • Blizzard Staff
  • Heat Ray
  • Staff of Earth
  • Razorblade Typhoon
  • Bubble Gun
  • Nightglow
  • Arc Surge

Lunar Events

Craft:

  • Nebula Blaze
  • Nebula Arcanum

Moon Lord

Use:

Nebula Blaze

while prioritizing mobility and survival.

Mage rewards players who actually learn their weapon collection instead of treating every new Staff as a straight numerical upgrade. The best spell against one boss may be awkward against another, while support weapons such as Nimbus Rod, Golden Shower, and Weather Pain can keep contributing even after you’ve switched to something stronger.

Once you understand those interactions and build around modern Mana regeneration instead of constantly chugging Mana Potions, Mage becomes one of Terraria’s most flexible and satisfying classes from the first Gem Staff all the way to Nebula Blaze and Last Prism.
