Defeating the Wall of Flesh changes Terraria dramatically. Hardmode introduces stronger enemies, biome spread, new ores, better armor, powerful weapons, Mimics, new events, and eventually the three Mechanical Bosses.
The early Hardmode period can feel almost like starting Terraria again because normal enemies suddenly take much longer to kill and can defeat an underprepared character very quickly.
This guide covers what to do immediately after entering Hardmode, how to progress through the new ore tiers, which upgrades to prioritize, useful weapons for every class, and how to prepare for the Mechanical Bosses.
1. Check the Hardmode V Immediately
When the Wall of Flesh dies, your world receives a large V-shaped conversion consisting of:
- Hallow
- Your world’s evil biome
The first thing to do is figure out where both sides of this Hardmode V appeared.
Check:
- Your main base
- Pylon villages
- Jungle
- Important farms
- Surface towns
If either side is spreading toward somewhere important, now is the time to contain it.
Check Every Pylon Village
Biome conversion can cause problems for NPC towns.
If a village becomes Corruption or Crimson, NPCs may move out and the Pylon can stop functioning.
Hallow is much less problematic.
NPCs can live in the Hallow, and existing:
- Forest
- Snow
- Desert
- Cavern
Pylons can continue working when those areas become Hallowed hybrid biomes.
Protect the Jungle
The Jungle deserves special attention.
If the evil side of the Hardmode V appears near your Jungle, locate it as soon as possible and create a buffer between the two areas.
The guide recommends using mining-speed bonuses and digging wide separation tunnels around dangerous infected sections.
Hallow isn’t nearly as concerning for the Jungle, so the main priority is stopping Corruption or Crimson from spreading where you don’t want it.
2. Get Better Wings
Once you’ve checked your important areas, mobility should be one of your first upgrades.
The recommended early option is:
Leaf Wings
Visit the Witch Doctor at night while he is living in the Jungle.
The guide lists Leaf Wings at:
75 Gold without happiness discounts
They provide a major mobility improvement over equipment such as:
- Fledgling Wings
- Rocket Boots
Other early Hardmode Wings usually require Souls of Flight, which come from Wyverns.
Since Wyverns can be dangerous when you’ve only just entered Hardmode, buying an easier pair of Wings first can make farming the better ones much more manageable.
If you’re short on money, continue progressing and come back later.
3. Farm Spider Fangs
A Spider Cave becomes extremely useful once Hardmode starts.
Black Recluses can drop:
Spider Fangs
These are used for early Summoner equipment.
The full recommended crafting set requires:
76 Spider Fangs
to make the armor and both summon weapons discussed in the guide.
Useful items include:
- Spider Armor
- Spider Staff
- Queen Spider Staff
Black Recluses can also drop the magic weapon:
Poison Staff
Is Spider Gear Worth It?
Spider Armor combined with:
- Spider Staff
- Abigail
can perform very well during early Hardmode.
Even if Summoner isn’t your main class, summons can provide useful extra damage.
If you aren’t interested in Summoner equipment, this step is completely optional.
4. Unlock the Hardmode Ores
Your next major progression goal is Hardmode ore.
Use the Hammer dropped by the Wall of Flesh to destroy Demon Altars or Crimson Altars.
The first three Altars determine your world’s Hardmode ores.
First Ore Tier
Your world receives either:
- Cobalt
- Palladium
Second Ore Tier
You receive either:
- Mythril
- Orichalcum
Third Ore Tier
You receive either:
- Adamantite
- Titanium
Additional Altars continue cycling through the same three ore types.
The guide recommends not going overboard because each additional cycle provides diminishing amounts of ore.
A suggested upper limit is around:
12 Altars
Alternative: Get Hardmode Ore Through Fishing
You don’t necessarily have to rely entirely on mining.
Hardmode fishing crates can contain:
- Ores
- Bars
including the new Hardmode metals.
Different crate tiers can provide different ore tiers.
Fishing can also give you excellent early Hardmode weapons.
Examples include:
- Bladetongue from Crimson
- Toxikarp from Corruption
- Crystal Serpent from Hallow
The downside is speed.
Fishing enough material for complete armor sets can take considerably longer than simply mining.
5. Mine Cobalt or Palladium First
Bring:
- Mining Potions
- Spelunker Potions
Then descend through a Hellevator and explore large Cavern tunnels.
Look for:
- Blue Cobalt
- Orange Palladium
A Molten Pickaxe is enough to mine the first Hardmode ore tier.
Don’t Waste Too Much Ore
You can craft complete Cobalt or Palladium equipment, but you don’t need to.
The most important first-tier item is the:
Pickaxe
You’ll need it to mine Mythril or Orichalcum.
The guide gives the requirement as:
54 Ore → 18 Bars
for your first Hardmode Pickaxe.
Pickaxe vs Drill
Hardmode ores can also make Drills.
The guide generally recommends Pickaxes instead.
Drills are:
- Slightly faster
- Shorter range
Pickaxes provide:
- Longer range
- Better weapon-like utility
- Different modifier options
Both accomplish the same progression goal, so use whichever you prefer.
6. Mine Mythril or Orichalcum
Once you have your first Hardmode Pickaxe or Drill, return underground.
Look for:
- Silvery-blue Mythril
- Pink Orichalcum
This time, collect at least:
100 Ore
because you need enough material for both:
- New Pickaxe
- New Anvil
Your Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil replaces your old Anvil for advanced Hardmode crafting.
7. Mine Adamantite or Titanium
With your second-tier Pickaxe, begin searching for:
- Adamantite
- Titanium
Your first priority is getting at least:
30 Ore
You’ll need it to upgrade your Hellforge.
Combine the third-tier ore with your old Hellforge at your new Hardmode Anvil.
Make sure the Hellforge is either:
- In your inventory
- In a nearby open Chest
rather than placed in the world.
Once you have the upgraded Forge and Anvil, you can start crafting the best early Hardmode ore equipment.
8. Craft Better Armor
Each Hardmode ore can produce armor with different helmets for:
- Melee
- Ranger
- Mage
Summoners have fewer dedicated ore-armor choices at this point.
Cobalt Armor
Cobalt provides straightforward stat increases.
It’s usable, but the guide doesn’t consider it particularly worthwhile unless you need an immediate upgrade.
Palladium Armor
Palladium is much more interesting.
Its set bonus gives you increased health regeneration after damaging enemies.
That extra survivability can make early Hardmode significantly easier.
Mythril Armor
Mythril doesn’t offer a particularly unusual set bonus, but its raw stats are strong enough to work well until you upgrade.
Orichalcum Armor
Orichalcum provides an offensive set effect that sends damaging petals toward enemies.
It’s a solid intermediate option.
Adamantite Armor
Adamantite offers excellent overall stats and is strong enough for early Mechanical Boss attempts.
Titanium Armor
Titanium is another top-tier early Hardmode armor set.
The guide highlights its special defensive/offensive effect involving damaging shards around your character.
Both Adamantite and Titanium are strong enough to carry you into the Mechanical Boss stage.
Frost Armor
Frost Armor is a hybrid set aimed at:
- Melee
- Ranger
To craft it, you’ll need Frost Cores from Ice Golems.
Ice Golems appear in the Snow biome during Blizzards.
Forbidden Armor
Forbidden Armor combines:
- Mage
- Summoner
bonuses.
You’ll need Forbidden Fragments from Sand Elementals.
Sand Elementals appear during Sandstorms.
Watch the Weather
These enemies don’t spawn whenever you want them.
The guide notes:
- Rain elsewhere means a Blizzard in the Snow biome
- Wind over about 30 mph can produce a Sandstorm in the Desert
If you’re targeting Frost or Forbidden Armor, pay attention to weather conditions while you’re doing other activities.
9. Farm Souls of Light and Souls of Night
Once you have better armor, begin collecting:
- Souls of Light
- Souls of Night
These become essential Hardmode crafting materials.
Souls of Light
Farm enemies in the Cavern-layer:
Hallow
Souls of Night
Farm enemies in the Cavern-layer:
Corruption or Crimson
Many enemies killed in the correct underground biome can drop the corresponding Soul.
You’ll need plenty of both for:
- Weapons
- Boss summons
- Accessories
- Other Hardmode recipes
Use Your Old Wall of Flesh Arena
If your Wall of Flesh runway was constructed from Stone, parts converted by the Hardmode V can become convenient early Soul-farming locations.
The Underworld itself remains relatively manageable early in Hardmode, giving you plenty of open space for combat.
Build a Cavern Farming Arena
Another useful method is creating a large underground combat arena.
Convert the center into the biome you need with blocks such as:
- Pearlstone
- Ebonstone
- Crimstone
Also create matching biome-block platforms in off-screen spawn areas.
Many enemies need suitable biome blocks to spawn on even if your character is already standing inside the correct biome.
Keep infected blocks contained so the artificial biome doesn’t spread farther than intended.
10. Farm Regular Mimics
Regular Mimics begin appearing in Hardmode and can drop excellent accessories.
They’re disguised as Chests until activated.
The Underworld and large Cavern arenas are good places to fight them because you’ll have plenty of room to dodge.
11. Hunt Biome Mimics
Hardmode adds three particularly dangerous biome Mimics:
- Hallowed Mimic
- Corrupt Mimic
- Crimson Mimic
These enemies are much stronger than regular Mimics.
They can:
- Charge through terrain
- Leap onto you
- Phase through solid blocks
On Expert or Master Mode, be particularly careful when attacking them from range while they’re pretending to be Chests.
Biome Mimic Rewards
These Mimics can drop powerful:
- Melee weapons
- Ranger weapons
- Mage weapons
- Grappling Hooks
- Accessories
- Greater Healing Potions
- Greater Mana Potions
Some of the drops are among the strongest equipment available before fighting the Mechanical Bosses.
How to Spawn Biome Mimics Manually
Instead of waiting for one to appear naturally, craft:
Key of Light
using:
15 Souls of Light
or:
Key of Night
using:
15 Souls of Night
Place the Key inside an otherwise empty Chest.
The Chest will transform into the appropriate biome Mimic.
You can do this anywhere.
A large surface boss arena is an excellent location because you have lots of room to dodge and fewer normal enemies interfering.
12. Start Collecting Ankh Shield Materials
Hardmode enemies begin dropping many accessories that provide immunity to different debuffs.
Store these.
Eventually they can be combined into the:
Ankh Shield
which protects against many of Terraria’s status effects.
Whenever an accessory has the Material tag, keep at least one copy and check what it can eventually become.
Sell duplicates if you don’t need them.
13. Farm the Wall of Flesh Again
Once you’re significantly stronger, return to the Underworld and kill the Wall of Flesh a few more times.
You’re looking for class Emblems such as:
- Warrior Emblem
- Ranger Emblem
- Sorcerer Emblem
- Summoner Emblem
Keep some extra Emblems too because they can later be upgraded into stronger accessories.
14. Start Focusing Your Build Around a Class
Early Hardmode is where specialization becomes increasingly important.
Armor, accessories, and weapons start offering much larger bonuses to specific damage types.
You can always switch later, but creating a focused:
- Melee
- Ranger
- Mage
- Summoner
loadout generally gives better results.
Best Early Hardmode Melee Weapons
Dao of Pow
The Dao of Pow is a powerful Flail.
Craft it with:
- 7 Souls of Light
- 7 Souls of Night
- 1 Dark Shard
- 1 Light Shard
Dark and Light Shards come from Mummies in evil and Hallowed Deserts.
The weapon can inflict the Confused debuff.
Amarok
If you enjoy Yoyos, farm the Hardmode Snow biome for:
Amarok
It’s a rare enemy drop.
Hel-Fire
Another Yoyo option is:
Hel-Fire
which can drop from enemies in the Underworld.
Chain Guillotines
Farm Corrupt Mimics for:
Chain Guillotines
Fetid Baghnakhs
Crimson Mimics can drop:
Fetid Baghnakhs
These provide another extremely strong early Hardmode melee option.
Best Early Hardmode Ranger Weapons
Onyx Blaster
The guide specifically recommends the:
Onyx Blaster
Craft it using:
- 2 Dark Shards
- 10 Souls of Night
- Shotgun
The Shotgun can be purchased from the Arms Dealer in Hardmode.
Dart Rifle
Corrupt Mimics can drop:
Dart Rifle
Dart Pistol
Crimson Mimics can provide the corresponding Dart weapon.
Daedalus Stormbow
Hallowed Mimics can drop:
Daedalus Stormbow
This is one of the strongest weapons for the Mechanical Boss stage.
The guide specifically recommends combining it with:
Holy Arrows
Adamantite or Titanium Repeater
If you don’t want to farm specialized drops, the high-tier Hardmode ore Repeaters are also solid weapons.
Best Early Hardmode Mage Weapons
Mage has an enormous selection at this stage.
Two recommendations stand out.
Crystal Storm
Craft Crystal Storm using:
- Spell Tome from the Wizard
- 15 Souls of Light
- 20 Crystal Shards
Crystal Shards grow in the Underground Hallow.
It’s a reliable general-purpose Mage weapon.
Crystal Serpent
The Crystal Serpent can be obtained by fishing in the Hallow.
It’s another strong early Hardmode magic option.
Mage gets many different weapons with unusual attack styles, so this is a good stage to experiment.
Best Early Hardmode Summoner Gear
Summoner has fewer direct upgrades at this stage.
Your main equipment includes:
- Spider Armor
- Spider Staff
- Queen Spider Staff
- Forbidden Armor
The guide also notes that Obsidian Armor can remain useful if you’re focusing heavily on Whips.
Firecracker
Wall of Flesh can drop:
Firecracker
One strategy is to hit with Snapthorn for its speed bonus before switching to Firecracker for increased DPS.
Cool Whip
Craft Cool Whip using:
- 8 Souls of Light
- 8 Souls of Night
- 1 Frost Core
Frost Cores come from Ice Golems during Blizzards.

15. Prepare for Hardmode Events
Hardmode adds several new dangers that can appear while you’re trying to gear up.
Hardmode Goblin Army
A Goblin Army can return during Hardmode.
The guide gives its daily chance as:
1 in 60
assuming you’ve already beaten one before entering Hardmode.
Hardmode introduces the stronger:
Goblin Summoner
which summons Goblin apparitions.
It’s more dangerous than normal Goblins but can drop useful Hardmode weapons.
Hardmode Blood Moon
Blood Moons also gain new enemies.
One example is the:
Clown
which throws dangerous explosive attacks.
It can drop the Bananarang, a boomerang-style melee weapon.
Fishing during a Hardmode Blood Moon can also summon additional new enemies.
Pirate Invasion
The Pirate Invasion becomes possible after destroying an evil Altar.
The guide gives the initial random occurrence chance as:
1 in 30
until you’ve completed the event once.
Afterward:
1 in 50
An underground bunker beneath a Lava or volcano-style trap can make the invasion easier, particularly when combined with an autoswing weapon.
16. Watch for Random Mechanical Boss Spawns
Once you’ve destroyed an Altar, the Mechanical Bosses can begin appearing naturally.
The three bosses are:
- The Destroyer
- The Twins
- Skeletron Prime
The guide gives a:
1 in 10 chance
for one of them to randomly appear at night until that boss has been defeated.
You’ll receive a warning message around dusk.
What If You’re Not Ready?
You don’t have to fight.
If a Mechanical Boss is about to appear and your gear isn’t ready, the guide suggests:
- Logging out
- Going underground and remaining there for roughly 90 seconds after the warning
- Allowing it to spawn and accepting the likely death so it despawns
The important point is that a random boss appearance doesn’t mean your playthrough is ruined.
Early Hardmode Progression Checklist
If you want the entire route condensed, follow this order:
- Locate both sides of the Hardmode V.
- Check your Pylon villages.
- Protect the Jungle from evil biome spread.
- Get upgraded Wings.
- Farm Spider Fangs if useful to your build.
- Smash Altars or obtain ore through fishing.
- Mine Cobalt/Palladium.
- Craft the first Hardmode Pickaxe.
- Mine Mythril/Orichalcum.
- Craft the upgraded Anvil and Pickaxe.
- Mine Adamantite/Titanium.
- Upgrade your Hellforge.
- Craft a strong armor set.
- Farm Souls of Light and Night.
- Hunt regular Mimics.
- Farm biome Mimics.
- Collect Ankh Shield components.
- Farm class Emblems from Wall of Flesh.
- Specialize into Melee, Ranger, Mage, or Summoner.
- Farm strong pre-Mech weapons.
- Prepare for Goblin, Blood Moon, and Pirate events.
- Start preparing for the Mechanical Bosses.
Early Hardmode Priorities for Beginners
If you’re overwhelmed, focus on four things first:
1. Mobility
Get Wings.
Being able to fly changes how safely you can:
- Explore
- Mine
- Fight
- Escape enemies
2. Mining Progression
Work through:
Cobalt/Palladium → Mythril/Orichalcum → Adamantite/Titanium
Don’t spend every piece of early ore on unnecessary equipment before unlocking the next mining tier.
3. Armor
Aim for a strong third-tier armor set or class-specific alternative before seriously tackling the Mechanical Bosses.
4. Weapons
Don’t assume your best pre-Hardmode weapon will remain good enough.
Early Hardmode offers huge upgrades through:
- Mimics
- Fishing
- Souls
- Crafting
- Events
- Rare enemy drops
Experiment until you find something that fits your class and playstyle.
Early Hardmode becomes much easier once you’ve completed those first major upgrades. Better Wings give you mobility, Hardmode ores provide defense, Souls unlock new recipes, and Mimics can provide weapons powerful enough to transform your build.
Once you’ve assembled strong armor and class-focused equipment, you’re ready for Terraria’s next major challenge: The Destroyer, The Twins, and Skeletron Prime.
