If your goal is to reach Hardmode quickly in Terraria without wasting time on unnecessary progression, you don’t need to collect every armor set, fight every boss, or fully explore every biome.
A fast pre-Hardmode route focuses on a few things that give you the most value for the least effort: NPC housing, the Demolitionist, Grenades, Fossil Armor, movement accessories, and efficient resource farming.
With a little luck, you can build a setup capable of fighting the Wall of Flesh surprisingly early.
Step 1: Build 4–5 NPC Houses
Start by chopping Wood and building around:
4–5 NPC houses
You don’t need an elaborate base.
For fast progression, simple functional rooms are enough.
Craft a Work Bench and use naturally generated Chests whenever possible instead of wasting time and materials crafting additional storage.
The most important early NPC for this strategy is the:
Demolitionist
Step 2: Find an Explosive
To get the Demolitionist to move in, you need an explosive in your inventory.
Search:
- Surface Chests
- Pots
- Easily accessible caves
until you find something such as a Bomb.
Keep it in your inventory while you have an available NPC house.
Once the requirements are met, the Demolitionist can move in without you having to defeat a boss first.
Why the Demolitionist Is So Important
The Demolitionist gives you immediate access to:
- Grenades
- Bombs
- Dynamite
All three dramatically speed up early progression.
Explosives let you mine terrain quickly, while Grenades give you an unusually strong early ranged weapon.
Step 3: Buy Grenades
Grenades cost only:
75 Copper each
according to the source.
They take a little practice because you need to learn their throwing arc and travel speed, but their damage is extremely strong for something available almost immediately.
The biggest advantage is reliability.
You don’t need:
- Rare Chest RNG
- Sky Islands
- Boss drops
- Complicated crafting
Once the Demolitionist moves in, you can simply buy them.
Why Grenades Are So Strong Early
Some powerful early weapons rely heavily on luck.
For example, a Starfury requires you to find the right Sky Island Chest.
Grenades don’t have that problem.
They provide strong ranged damage almost immediately, making them useful against:
- Normal enemies
- Early bosses
- Groups of enemies
- Wall of Flesh
They’re especially effective when combined with the armor route covered next.
Step 4: Head to the Underground Desert
Your next destination should be the Underground Desert.
Bring plenty of Bombs from the Demolitionist.
Your main target is:
Desert Fossils
Rather than slowly mining through the biome, use explosives to collect large amounts quickly.
Look for an Extractinator
While exploring the Underground Desert, look for an Extractinator.
It can appear as furniture in Desert Cabins.
The source also mentions alternatives including:
- Underground Gold Chests
- Underground Cabins
- Wooden Crates from fishing
But the Desert itself is a good place to search because you’re already farming Fossils there.
Step 5: Farm Around 1,000 Desert Fossils
The source recommends collecting approximately:
1,000 Desert Fossils
That sounds like a lot, but Bombs make the process considerably faster.
Once you have them, feed the Fossils into an Extractinator.
Possible rewards include:
- Gems
- Ores
- Coins
- Sturdy Fossils
This is where the strategy becomes especially efficient.
Why Fossil Farming Is So Efficient
One activity gives you several useful progression rewards at once.
Desert Fossils can ultimately help provide:
- Fossil Armor
- Gems for a Grappling Hook
- Extra ores
- Money
- Resources to sell
Instead of separately farming armor, mobility, and money, you’re progressing toward all of them simultaneously.
Step 6: Craft Fossil Armor
Use your Sturdy Fossils to craft Fossil Armor.
Fossil Armor originally belonged to the old Thrower class, but it now benefits ranged damage.
That makes it particularly useful for this strategy because Grenades benefit from the setup.
The combination becomes:
Demolitionist → Grenades + Bombs → Desert Fossils → Fossil Armor
The Demolitionist provides both the weapon and the mining tools that help you obtain the armor supporting that playstyle.
Step 7: Use Gems for a Grappling Hook
The Extractinator can produce plenty of Gems.
Keep enough of one Gem type to craft a Grappling Hook.
A Hook is one of the most useful early mobility upgrades because it lets you:
- Escape pits
- Climb cliffs
- Recover from bad jumps
- Move quickly through caves
- Reposition during fights
Sell excess Gems if you need money for more Grenades, Bombs, or other equipment.
Step 8: Search for Movement Accessories
Movement is one of the few areas where this fast progression route still depends somewhat on RNG.
The main item to watch for is:
Hermes Boots
Look through underground Chests while you’re already exploring.
Using a Spelunker Potion can make Chest hunting easier.
Also keep any useful double-jump accessories you find, such as:
- Cloud in a Bottle
- Similar jump accessories
Other valuable mobility finds can include:
- Flying Carpet
- Other random movement accessories
You don’t need perfect mobility.
You just need enough movement to comfortably survive bosses and the Wall of Flesh.
Step 9: Collect Life Crystals
While bombing through caves and the Desert, keep an eye out for:
Life Crystals
More maximum health makes the entire route safer.
You don’t necessarily need to max out every possible upgrade immediately, but grabbing Life Crystals whenever you see them is almost always worth the detour.
Step 10: Pick Up Useful Potions
Keep useful potions you encounter while exploring.
The source specifically mentions items such as:
- Battle Potions
- Spelunker Potions
- Featherfall Potions
- Gravitation Potions
Some are useful for farming, while others let you efficiently access optional loot without wasting large amounts of time.
You Can Technically Fight the Wall of Flesh Already
One important thing many players don’t realize is that you don’t actually need to defeat every pre-Hardmode boss before fighting the Wall of Flesh.
If your only goal is getting into Hardmode as quickly as possible, you can potentially head toward the Underworld once your basic gear and mobility are ready.
However, there are still a few optional progression steps that can make Hardmode much smoother.
Recommended Optional Step: Defeat Skeletron
If you’re speed-focused but don’t want to skip everything, defeating Skeletron is a strong choice before the Wall of Flesh.
That gives you access to the Dungeon.
Unlocking the Dungeon before Hardmode means you can collect useful loot and avoid having to deal with harder Hardmode enemies while trying to unlock it later.
Recommended Optional Step: Complete the Goblin Army
The source also recommends doing the Goblin Army before entering Hardmode.
This lets you rescue the Goblin Tinkerer.
Having him available gives you:
- Tinkerer’s Workshop
- Accessory combining
- Reforging
Those systems become extremely useful as soon as Hardmode begins.
Optional: Defeat Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu
You can also defeat your world evil’s boss:
- Eater of Worlds
- Brain of Cthulhu
This allows you to craft a stronger Pickaxe and eventually mine Hellstone more conveniently.
If you want:
- Molten Armor
- Hellstone weapons
- Stronger pre-Hardmode gear
then this detour is worthwhile.
If your only goal is entering Hardmode quickly, however, you don’t necessarily need to spend time farming every possible upgrade.
Optional: Explore Sky Islands
If you want extra loot without spending too much time exploring, use:
- Gravitation Potions
- Featherfall Potions
to search for Floating Islands.
Potential useful rewards include things such as:
- Starfury
- Mage accessories
- Early wings or mobility items depending on your version and loot
Gravitation Potions are one of the quickest ways to scan the sky.
Instead of building upward or searching randomly, you can simply move through the upper world and locate islands directly.
Rushing through Terraria progression?
A comfortable controller can make long exploration, farming, building, and boss-fighting sessions easier to manage.

Fishing Is Still Extremely Useful
Fishing is slower than immediately bombing through the Desert, but it’s one of Terraria’s most reliable alternative progression methods.
Crates can provide things such as:
- Boots
- Double-jump accessories
- Extractinator
- Weapons
- Crafting resources
- Valuable materials to sell
If you enjoy fishing, you can obtain a huge amount of progression gear without relying entirely on exploration.
It’s especially useful when your world RNG refuses to give you one specific accessory.
When Fishing Is Worth Adding to a Fast Route
Fishing makes the most sense when:
- You can’t find Hermes Boots
- You still need an Extractinator
- You want extra money
- You’re missing movement accessories
- Exploration RNG has been terrible
Instead of spending an hour searching every cave, fishing can sometimes solve the problem more reliably.
Optional: Use Molotov Cocktails
If you happen to find the Tavernkeep, there’s another useful weapon option.
The Tavernkeep sells Ale.
Ale can be used in crafting Molotov Cocktails.
Like Grenades, Molotov Cocktails are strong throwable weapons with good area control.
They also apply fire damage.
The source recommends them particularly for:
- Groups of enemies
- Crowd control
- Wall of Flesh
You don’t need to build your entire progression route around them, but they’re worth remembering if you encounter the Tavernkeep early.
Why the Demolitionist Should Almost Always Be an Early Priority
Even if you don’t want to rely on Grenades as your main weapon, getting the Demolitionist early is still extremely useful.
Bombs and Dynamite speed up:
- Mining
- Hellevator construction
- Desert Fossil farming
- Underground exploration
- Arena excavation
- Accessing blocked areas
He saves a huge amount of manual mining.
That’s why the Demolitionist is one of the most valuable NPCs for fast pre-Hardmode progression.
Fast Terraria Pre-Hardmode Progression Route
Here’s the entire strategy condensed into a simple route.
Step 1: Gather Wood
Cut down Trees and collect enough Wood for basic housing.
Step 2: Build 4–5 NPC Houses
Keep them functional and simple.
Don’t waste time building an elaborate base yet.
Step 3: Search Surface Chests and Pots
Your main goal is finding an Explosive.
Keep it in your inventory.
Step 4: Wait for the Demolitionist
Once he moves in, purchase:
- Grenades
- Bombs
Step 5: Head to the Desert
Use Bombs to quickly enter and clear portions of the Underground Desert.
Step 6: Farm Desert Fossils
Aim for around:
1,000 Fossils
if you want to maximize the value of the route.
Step 7: Find an Extractinator
Check Desert Cabins while farming.
Use another source only if necessary.
Step 8: Process Your Fossils
Use the Extractinator to obtain:
- Sturdy Fossils
- Gems
- Ores
- Money
Step 9: Craft Fossil Armor
Use Sturdy Fossils for your armor setup.
Step 10: Craft a Grappling Hook
Use the Gems obtained while processing Fossils.
Step 11: Keep Exploring for Movement
Watch for:
- Hermes Boots
- Double-jump accessories
- Flying Carpet
- Other useful equipment
Use Spelunker Potions when available.
Step 12: Improve Your Health
Collect Life Crystals while exploring.
Step 13: Decide How Much Pre-Hardmode You Want to Skip
From here you can either:
Fastest Route
Head toward the Wall of Flesh once your setup is strong enough.
More Comfortable Route
First complete:
- Skeletron
- Goblin Army
- Goblin Tinkerer
Stronger Gear Route
Also defeat:
- Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu
then mine Hellstone and craft Molten equipment.
Best Possible Early Setup From This Route
If everything goes well, your character can end up with:
- Fossil Armor
- Grenades
- Bombs
- Grappling Hook
- Hermes Boots or similar mobility
- Double-jump accessory
- Extra random accessories
- Improved health
- Plenty of money
- Materials from the Extractinator
Potentially within the first couple of in-game days, you can already have most of what you need to start taking on bosses or preparing directly for the Wall of Flesh.
Fast Progression Doesn’t Mean Skipping Everything
You don’t need to follow this route perfectly.
You can mix different approaches.
For example:
- Use Grenades early
- Farm Fossils
- Explore Sky Islands
- Fish for missing accessories
- Defeat Skeletron
- Skip optional bosses
- Grab Molten equipment anyway
The core idea is to avoid spending time collecting upgrades that will be replaced almost immediately.
Focus on items that solve multiple problems at once.
The Demolitionist gives you both powerful early weapons and fast excavation. Desert Fossils provide armor, Gems, money, and crafting materials. Movement accessories help with both exploration and bosses.
That’s what makes this route efficient: each major step contributes to several parts of your progression instead of solving only one small problem.
