Terraria’s early-game meta has changed a lot with new items, buffs, mobility tools, pets, and utility gear. Some of the newer options are powerful enough to completely change how you approach pre-Hardmode bosses and exploration.

From early Summoner weapons to incredibly fast movement items and new utility tools, here are some of the best pre-Hardmode items in Terraria 1.4.5 and how to get them.

Fennec Fox Box

Summoners traditionally have fewer options than other classes at the very beginning of a Terraria playthrough, but the Fennec Fox Box gives you a potentially powerful early summon.

It can appear near the outer edges of the world during daytime.

Look around:

  • Grass
  • Jungle Grass
  • Snow
  • Ice Blocks

The encounter appears surrounded by Goblin Archers, which you need to defeat before freeing it.

Its spawn chance is low, so finding one requires some luck.

How to Know You’re Far Enough From Spawn

The source compares its spawning area with Goblin Scouts.

If you’re far enough toward the edge of the world that Goblin Scouts are appearing, you’re in the right general area to potentially encounter one.

That makes the outer edges of the map worth visiting surprisingly early.

Why the Fennec Fox Box Is So Strong

The Fennec Fox Box has an unusual dual-purpose mechanic.

It can:

  • Function as a summon
  • Deal Summon damage when actively used
  • Attack enemies as a pet
  • Provide light

That means you’re getting more than a basic passive pet.

Both its normal attacks and additional attack can contribute meaningful damage.

Even characters who aren’t committed to playing Summoner can benefit from having the pet attacking alongside them.

The biggest downside is simply finding one.

If you want it early, spending more time around the outer sections of your world can improve your chances of eventually encountering the event.

Roller Skates

The Roller Skates are one of the biggest early-game mobility upgrades introduced in the source.

They can be purchased from either:

  • Traveling Merchant for 15 Gold
  • Skeleton Merchant for 10 Gold

That makes them obtainable without defeating a boss if the correct merchant appears.

Why Roller Skates Are So Good

Roller Skates provide:

  • Faster acceleration
  • Higher maximum movement speed
  • Increased jump height
  • Minecart functionality

The source specifically describes their speed as surpassing older boot accessories, including Terraspark Boots.

Being able to accelerate quickly is especially useful during boss fights.

Instead of slowly building toward maximum running speed, you can reposition faster when something starts chasing you.

This is useful against bosses such as:

  • Eye of Cthulhu
  • Skeletron
  • Wall of Flesh

Roller Skates Also Work as a Minecart

Another useful feature is their built-in minecart functionality.

That means one item gives you:

  • Running mobility
  • Better jumps
  • Fast acceleration
  • Minecart travel

For only 10–15 Gold depending on the merchant, that’s an impressive amount of utility from one early-game item.

Mandible Blade

The Mandible Blade received a major improvement in 1.4.5.

Instead of being an easily ignored melee weapon, it can now be thrown extremely quickly.

That dramatically improves its effectiveness.

The source compares its early-game performance favorably with weapons such as the Starfury.

How to Get the Mandible Blade

You can farm it from:

  • Antlion Chargers
  • Antlion Swarmers

with approximately a:

2% drop chance

These enemies spawn frequently in the Desert, so the low individual drop chance isn’t as painful as it initially looks.

If you’re already exploring or farming the Desert, it’s worth keeping an eye out for one.

Why It’s Good Before Bosses

The Mandible Blade can be acquired before defeating any bosses.

Its fast thrown attacks give melee characters a ranged option while still using melee damage.

That makes it useful against several pre-Hardmode bosses where standing directly beside the target would normally be dangerous.

If you’re already farming the Desert, there’s little reason to ignore it.

Chillet Mount

The source also highlights Chillet as one of the strongest new early mobility options.

Two versions are mentioned, differing mainly in color while behaving the same mechanically.

Its mobility is extremely strong for something obtainable so early.

The source describes it as roughly:

50% faster than Hermes Boots

and it comes with much more than simple movement speed.

Chillet Dash

The mount includes a built-in dash.

The dash:

  • Deals around 35 damage
  • Grants brief invincibility frames when passing through enemies
  • Has a lower cooldown than the Shield of Cthulhu dash

That means you can use it frequently during combat.

You can rapidly reposition while also damaging enemies and potentially avoiding contact damage.

Chillet Damage Bonus

The mount also provides a:

10% damage increase

to your attacks according to the source.

That’s powerful because it isn’t limited to a specific class.

Whether you’re using:

  • Melee
  • Ranger
  • Mage
  • Summoner

the general damage increase can benefit your build.

How to Find Chillet

Large Dragon Eggs generate underground during world creation.

The source gives the following world-generation amounts:

  • Small world: 6
  • Medium world: 9
  • Large world: 12

These appear in the Cavern layer.

A Spelunker Potion is strongly recommended because it makes locating the eggs much easier.

The eggs are limited world-generation objects, so new ones don’t simply keep spawning afterward.

Shimmer Gun

The Shimmer Gun turns the previously novelty-focused Slime Gun into something with actual utility.

After obtaining a Slime Gun from King Slime, you can transform it through Shimmer into the Shimmer Gun.

It applies a Shimmer-style effect to applicable NPCs and players.

What the Shimmer Gun Is Useful For

Its main uses include:

  • Transforming NPC appearances
  • Interacting with certain critters
  • Converting Torches into biome-specific versions

Instead of physically moving an NPC into a Shimmer pool, you can simply use the gun on them.

That’s a much more convenient way to access Shimmered NPC appearances.

Ram Rune

The Ram Rune is a post-Skeletron utility accessory found in:

  • Golden Dungeon Chests
  • Dungeon fishing crates

Once equipped, it gives you a ground-pound attack.

How the Ground Pound Works

Using the Ram Rune allows you to slam downward and deal damage when you hit the ground.

The damage becomes stronger if you begin the attack from at least:

10 tiles high

If you collide with an enemy during the ground pound, the source says you receive approximately:

0.1 seconds of invincibility

The direct damage isn’t the only reason to use it.

The knockback can be extremely useful for controlling groups of enemies.

Ram Rune for Crowd Control

The ground-pound impact can knock enemies away from you.

That makes it useful when:

  • Surrounded by enemies
  • Clearing crowded areas
  • Fighting events
  • Trying to create space during a boss fight

It’s essentially both an attack and an emergency movement option.

Ram Rune Prevents Fall Damage

One of its best utility features is complete protection from fall damage while performing the ground pound.

That makes it excellent for descending quickly.

For example, if you have a Hellevator, you can use the ground pound to fall rapidly without worrying about dying when you hit the bottom.

It provides an alternative to using a Slime Mount for the same general purpose.

The downside is progression: you need to defeat Skeletron before you can properly explore the Dungeon and obtain it.

Digtoise

Another useful early-game pet highlighted in the source is Digtoise.

Unlike ordinary cosmetic pets, Digtoise can actually help mine blocks.

It’s found in the Desert and can potentially be obtained right from the beginning of a playthrough.

Using a Spelunker Potion can make locating it easier.

Digtoise Mining Ability

The source gives Digtoise a mining-speed value of around:

26%

Its individual mining speed is slower than even a Copper Pickaxe.

But it has one major advantage:

It can mine three blocks at once.

That’s extremely convenient when digging straight tunnels.

Digtoise for Hellevators

Because it mines three blocks simultaneously, Digtoise creates tunnels that are already a useful width for:

  • Underground exploration
  • Horizontal tunnels
  • Hellevators

So even though each individual mining action isn’t particularly fast, the ability to clear three blocks together can save significant effort.

It’s another reason the Desert can be a great early-game destination.

Best Early-Game Desert Items

Several strong items in this guide encourage you to visit the Desert early.

You can potentially find or farm:

  • Mandible Blade
  • Digtoise
  • Other useful Desert equipment

Bringing a Spelunker Potion can make the trip significantly more productive.

Best Pre-Hardmode Mobility Items

Several items here are particularly powerful because of mobility.

Roller Skates

Best for:

  • Running speed
  • Acceleration
  • Jumping
  • Minecart travel

Chillet

Best for:

  • Very high movement speed
  • Dashing
  • Contact avoidance
  • General damage bonus

Ram Rune

Best for:

  • Fast downward movement
  • Fall-damage immunity
  • Crowd control
  • Hellevator travel

Different items dominate different directions of movement, so there’s no reason you have to treat them as direct replacements for one another.

Best Pre-Hardmode Combat Items

For direct early-game combat, the strongest options covered here include:

Fennec Fox Box

Excellent for passive Summon damage and additional attacks.

Mandible Blade

Strong pre-boss melee weapon with a fast thrown attack.

Chillet

Provides both mobility and additional combat utility through its dash and damage bonus.

These items can make early bosses substantially easier if you’re lucky enough to obtain them quickly.

Best Pre-Hardmode Utility Items

Not every powerful item needs to increase raw DPS.

Shimmer Gun

Makes Shimmer interactions with NPCs dramatically more convenient.

Ram Rune

Provides movement, crowd control, damage, and fall protection.

Digtoise

Automatically helps you mine three-block-wide tunnels.

These items improve the parts of Terraria that normally require additional setup or repetitive actions.

Best Terraria 1.4.5 Early-Game Items From This List

A simple summary looks like this:

  1. Fennec Fox Box – Powerful early Summoner option and damaging pet
  2. Roller Skates – Exceptional running, acceleration, jumping, and minecart utility
  3. Mandible Blade – Strong farmable pre-boss melee weapon
  4. Chillet – Fast mount with dash, invincibility frames, and additional damage
  5. Shimmer Gun – Convenient NPC and cosmetic Shimmer tool
  6. Ram Rune – Ground pound, crowd control, fall protection, and mobility
  7. Digtoise – Early mining pet capable of clearing three blocks at once

Terraria’s early game is no longer just about rushing Hermes Boots, grabbing the first decent weapon you find, and preparing for the Eye of Cthulhu.

Newer items provide much more variety.

You can find powerful pets near the edge of the map, buy Roller Skates before fighting a boss, farm a strong melee weapon in the Desert, find an extremely fast mount underground, or let a mining pet help build your Hellevator.

If you happen to find several of these items early, you can enter your first boss fights with dramatically more mobility, utility, and damage than a traditional early-game character.
