With the Mistlands Update, Valheim now allows you to tame and breed boars, wolves, lox, and chickens, each offering unique benefits. Whether you’re looking for a steady supply of foodmaterials, or combat companions, this guide will help you master the taming and breeding process for all four animals.

Taming Basics

Finding Your Tameable Animals

  • Boars – Found in the Meadows
  • Wolves – Found in the Mountains
  • Lox – Found in the Plains
  • Chickens – Purchased as eggs from Haldor, the merchant (available after defeating Yagluth)

Capturing Wild Animals

For boars, wolves, and lox, taming is easier when you trap them first:

  • Boars: Use Roundpole fences or Wood walls.
  • Wolves: Use Steak walls or Stone walls.
  • Lox: Use Stone walls or dig a steep ditch.
  • Chickens: Skip capturing—eggs are already tamed.

Use the Abyssal Harpoon to drag an animal into an enclosure if needed.

Taming Conditions

For taming to progress, three conditions must be met:

  1. Animal must be inside the active area (64 meters from a player).
  2. Animal must not be alerted (no red exclamation mark above its head).
  3. Animal must not be hungry (must have food nearby).
  • Avoid fire near boars (keep it at least 6 meters away).
  • Wolves must start taming before dawn, as night-spawned wolves despawn in the morning.
  • Raid-event creatures cannot be tamed, as they remain permanently alert.

Once all conditions are met, the animal’s status will change to “Acclimatizing” and yellow hearts will appear.

Speeding Up Taming

  • Taming progresses every 3 seconds, requiring 600 successful ticks.
  • If uninterrupted, taming takes 30 minutes.
  • A single food item keeps an animal fed for 10 minutes—drop at least 5 to be safe.
  • Sleeping resets hunger, so don’t sleep while taming.

Taming-Specific Foods

Each animal eats different food types:

  • Boars – Mushrooms, Carrots, Turnips, Berries, Onions
  • Wolves – Raw Meat, Neck Tails, Sausages, Fish
  • Lox – Cloudberries, Barley, Flax
  • Chickens – Barley, Dandelions, Beech Seeds, Birch Seeds, Carrot Seeds, Turnip Seeds, Onion Seeds

Once fully tamed, you’ll see a message on the screen and be able to pet and rename your new companion.

Breeding Mechanics

Tamed animals can be bred for sustainable resources. Breeding follows the same three taming conditions:

  1. Active area: A player must be within 64 meters.
  2. Not alerted: No hostile creatures nearby.
  3. Not hungry: Food must be available.
  4. Partner needed: Two tamed, non-pregnant animals nearby.
  5. Population limit not exceeded:
    • Boars: Max 5 within 10 meters
    • Wolves: Max 4 within 10 meters
    • Chickens: Max 10 within 10 meters (eggs count)
    • Lox: Max 4 within 20 meters
  • Eggs must be picked up regularly to allow further breeding.
  • Animals gain Love Points every 30 seconds, with a 33% chance per check.
  • Boars, Wolves, Chickens need 3 Love Points to get pregnant; Lox need 4.

Breeding Timelines

  • Boars, Wolves, and Chickens: Offspring spawn after 1.5 minutes.
  • Lox: Offspring spawn after 2.5 minutes.
  • Young animals mature after:
    • Boars, Wolves, Chickens: 50 minutes
    • Lox: 100 minutes

Star Levels & Offspring

  • 1 or 2-star boars/wolves pass down their levels to offspring.
  • Lox and Chickens do not have stars, but chickens inherit their parent’s color.

Harvesting & Butchering

Tamed animals drop valuable resources:

  • Wolves – Wolf hides (for Wolf Armor upgrades)
  • Lox – Lox meat (for Lox meat pies)
  • Chickens – Chicken meat (for Honey Glazed Chicken, one of the best healing foods)
  • Boars – Raw meat and leather scraps

Use the Butcher Knife (4 Tin, 2 Wood) for a clean kill.

  • Baby animals do not drop loot.
  • Lox and chicks occasionally drop materials when butchered.
