Farming in Valheim is more essential than ever, thanks to recent updates introducing new crops, farming mechanics, and even a dedicated farming skill. Whether you’re looking to grow high-quality food, craft powerful potions, or produce materials for advanced weapons and armor, an efficient farm is crucial for long-term survival. This guide covers everything you need to know about farming, including how to maximize your yields, level up your farming skill quickly, and ensure your crops thrive in any biome.

Why Farming Matters in Valheim

Farming provides a reliable supply of food, ingredients for mead and potions, and raw materials for some of the strongest gear in the game. With the addition of a farming skill, new farming gear, and expanded food options, there’s no better time to start optimizing your farm.

Unlocking New Crops

As you explore new biomes, you’ll gain access to unique plantable resources:

  • Carrots – Found in the Black Forest
  • Turnips – Located in the Swamps
  • Onions – Available in the Mountains
  • Barley & Flax – Exclusive to the Plains
  • Uten Puffs & Mage Caps – Grown in the Mistlands
  • Vine Berries – Found in the Ashlands

These crops provide the means to craft biome-specific foods that enhance survival in harsher environments. Always pick up seeds or plants when you encounter them—you’ll need them for future cultivation.

Cultivating Soil & Planting Seeds

All crops require cultivated soil, which you can prepare using the Cultivator tool (crafted with 5 Bronze and 5 Core Wood at a Forge). Once the soil is cultivated, you can use the same tool to plant your crops. Some crops grow from seeds, while others (like Barley, Flax, Uten Puffs, and Mage Caps) can be planted directly.

The Cultivator can also be used to plant trees, though trees do not require cultivated soil.

Can You Grow Wild Foraged Foods?

No. Wild berries and mushrooms do not grow from seeds, but they do respawn in the same location after a few in-game days. Mark these locations on your map for easy recollection when your supplies run low.

The New Farming Skill & Leveling Up Fast

With the Bog Witch Update, farming actions—including foraging, planting, harvesting, and using the cultivator—now contribute to a new Farming skill. Increasing this skill level provides multiple benefits:

  • Lower stamina use when planting and harvesting
  • Reduced wear on the Cultivator
  • Increased harvest radius when using the new Scythe
  • Higher chance of bonus crops when harvesting

Fast Leveling Tip:

For a quick farming skill boost, spam grass planting using the cultivator—it grants XP per action just like planting crops but requires no resources.

Farming Gear: Boost Your Efficiency

Certain clothing items significantly improve your farming ability. These items are available from Hildir the Merchantonce you return the Brass Chest, obtained by defeating Brena in the Smoldering Tomb.

Farming Gear Set Bonus:

  • Harvest Tunic & Harvest Dress – Reduce stamina usage by 20%
  • Straw Hat – Grants the Harvester Set Bonus, increasing Farming skill by 25 levels

Equipping these dramatically improves your chances of harvesting bonus crops, making them an excellent investment.

How to Ensure Healthy Crops

Crops in Valheim need three key conditions to grow successfully:

  1. Planted in the correct biome
  2. Adequate spacing
  3. Unobstructed sunlight

If these conditions aren’t met, plants will grow weakly and may eventually die. However, if corrected before they reach maturity, they can recover.

Biome-Specific Crop Growth

Each crop only grows in certain biomes. Below is a guide to where you can plant each crop:

  • Carrots – Meadows, Black Forest, Plains, Ashlands
  • Turnips – Meadows, Black Forest, Swamps, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands
  • Onions – Meadows, Black Forest, Plains, Ashlands
  • Barley & Flax – Plains only
  • Uten Puffs & Mage Caps – Mistlands only
  • Vine Berries – All biomes except Mountains and Deep North

Since no single biome supports all crops, consider building a dual-biome farm between the Plains and Mistlands to maximize efficiency.

Proper Crop Spacing

Crops must be at least one meter apart from each other and other objects (rocks, trees, structures). To maintain neat rows, try planting in a 5×5 grid pattern:

  • Lay down cultivated soil
  • Plant seeds in each corner first
  • Fill in the spaces evenly

If crops are too cramped, they will die or fail to mature properly.

Preventing Crop Destruction

While growing, crops are vulnerable to enemy attacks. Protect your farm with:

  • Fences and walls to block creatures
  • Raised platforms to keep crops safe
  • Moats or trenches as additional barriers

Optimizing Growth Time

Most crops take 2–3 in-game days to mature (60–80 real minutes if you don’t sleep). To speed up growth, sleep as soon as possible after midday—this can cut growth time to under 30 minutes.

Since crops mature at slightly different rates, stagger your plantings for a steady supply.

The Scythe: Harvesting Made Easy

The Scythe is a new mid-game tool that makes harvesting much faster. Crafted at a Level 2 Forge (6 Silver + Scythe Handle), it allows you to harvest over 30 crops in a single swing. However, it does not work on Uten Puffs, Mage Caps, or Vine Berries.

Managing Your Harvest

Once you’ve harvested your crops, resist the urge to immediately cook everything. Instead, set aside a portion for replanting:

  • Carrots, Turnips, Onions – Yield 3 seeds per replant
  • Barley, Flax – Yield 1 seed per replant (requires more careful management)
  • Ash Vines – Continually spread without replanting

Processing Crops for Advanced Uses

Several crops require further processing before use:

  • Flax → Linen Thread (Spinning Wheel) – Used for armor, weapons, and Lox Saddle
  • Barley → Barley Flour (Windmill) – Used in advanced cooking recipes

Windmill Optimization:

Windmills process Barley at varying speeds depending on wind strength. Build in open areas to avoid obstructions, which can slow down production.

Final Thoughts

Farming in Valheim is an essential skill that becomes more rewarding as you progress. By maximizing efficiency, protecting your crops, and utilizing the Harvester set bonus, you’ll have a steady supply of top-tier foods, potions, and crafting materials.
