Welcome, fellow adventurers! Today, we’ll be taking on the six Dream Bosses of Hollow Knight, ranking them from the easiest to the most difficult. If you thought we were starting with Nightmare King Grimm, you must be insane! Let’s jump right into it.

1. Failed Champion – The Easiest Dream Boss

The Failed Champion is, by far, the easiest Dream Boss in the game—though a couple of mistakes can still cost you dearly. To make this fight manageable, equip the following charms:

  • Quick Slash
  • Soul Catcher
  • Grubsong
  • Nailmaster’s Glory
  • Long Nail

Strategy

  • Always dash towards him when he jumps—unless he jumps away, in which case, be ready for his ground slam attack.
  • His shockwave attack can be dodged by jumping over it at the right moment.
  • His hammer swing takes away two masks per hit, so avoid it at all costs.
  • Use Long Nail to keep a safe distance while dealing damage.

Despite his intimidating attacks, Failed Champion goes down quickly if you play aggressively while avoiding his deadly swings. With that, let’s move on to the next challenge.

2. Lost Kin – The Second Easiest Dream Boss

For Lost Kin, we’ll be using the same charm setup as before. His fight is slightly trickier due to his quick dashes and the infected blobs that litter the arena.

Strategy

  • Watch for his short hops—these signal that he’s about to flail his weapon.
  • When he pulls his head back and shakes, he’s preparing to dash forward.
  • If the orange blobs are becoming overwhelming, consider equipping Defender’s Crest to mitigate them.
  • When he performs a downward spike attack, he releases more blobs—so move quickly to avoid getting overwhelmed.
  • Use Shade Soul frequently, as you’ll be gaining plenty of Soul from the orange blobs.

With careful movement and spell usage, Lost Kin falls quickly.

3. White Defender – Mid-Tier Difficulty

The White Defender is a tricky boss due to his movement patterns and his relentless use of dung projectiles.

Strategy

  • Stay just outside his throwing radius, and take advantage of openings to attack.
  • Howling Wraiths is extremely effective when he leaps above you.
  • His dung spikes emerge after his slam attack—so be ready to position yourself accordingly.
  • His ball form leaves only a small window to land hits before he charges at you again.
  • Healing is possible while he’s throwing dung, but be quick!

Though chaotic, White Defender can be beaten consistently with proper positioning and spell usage.

4. Soul Tyrant – A Fast-Paced Battle

What makes Soul Tyrant difficult is his speed and constant projectiles.

Strategy

  • Position yourself in the middle of the screen to maximize your Abyss Shriek effectiveness.
  • His ground slams can be dodged by jumping at the right moment.
  • If he fakes you out with a downward attack, use a double jump to avoid taking damage.
  • As with previous fights, spamming Abyss Shriek is a great way to deal heavy damage.

His agility makes the fight a challenge, but using spells effectively can help you secure victory.

5. Grey Prince Zote – A Tough but Predictable Fight

Grey Prince Zote is an unpredictable foe, but with patience and good spacing, he can be defeated.

Strategy

  • Swap in Soul Eater, Quick Slash, and Thorns of Agony to maximize damage.
  • When he starts spitting minions, get underneath him and spam Abyss Shriek.
  • When he puts his sword behind his head, get ready for a charge attack.
  • Stay defensive, heal when possible, and punish him with spells when he leaves an opening.

The key to winning is balancing offense with defense. With enough patience, Grey Prince Zote will fall.

6. Nightmare King Grimm – The Hardest Dream Boss

At last, we arrive at the ultimate challenge: Nightmare King Grimm. This boss is brutally difficult due to his speed and damage output.

Recommended Charms

  • Unbreakable Strength
  • Quick Slash
  • Mark of Pride

Strategy

  • He has six attacks, each requiring precise dodging.
  • His bat projectile attack can be avoided by jumping over the first bat and dashing forward.
  • His fire pillar attack is your best chance to deal damage—use Abyss Shriek between the third and fourth pillars.
  • When he dashes and rises, make sure to stay just off to the left or right to avoid his flames.
  • His pufferfish attack requires you to track the fireball heights to determine when to jump.
  • The background changes as the fight progresses, increasing the intensity.

Even when you know the patterns, this fight demands perfection. One mistake can cost you everything, and you’ll see the game-over screen many times before you emerge victorious.

Conclusion

There you have it—the six Hollow Knight Dream Bosses ranked from easiest to hardest. Whether you’re a veteran looking to optimize your strategy or a new player struggling with these fights, this guide should help you navigate these challenging encounters.

Good luck, and may the Pale King guide your path!
