Reaching the summit of Timberwolf Mountain is one of the most iconic and rewarding goals in The Long Dark. This guide walks you through a reliable route to the top, aimed at Voyager difficulty — a balance between challenge and survivability. Whether you’re a first-time climber or just need a refresher, follow these steps to ascend with confidence.

🧰 Stage One: Preparation & Supplies

Start your run outside of Timberwolf Mountain so you can gather key supplies. A great starting region is Coastal Highway, due to its rich loot and direct access to Timberwolf via Pleasant Valley.

What to bring:

  • Clothing: Scavenge the warmest clothes and repair with cloth + sewing kit.
  • Weaponry: Rifle + ammunition highly recommended; cleaning kit optional.
  • Food & Drink: A few canned meals, a can opener, coffee, ~2 liters of water.
  • Fire Supplies: Hatchet, accelerant, a few firestarting items. Wood can be harvested on-site.
  • Tools: Hacksaw (for crates), lantern (for caves), bedroll (never drop it!).
  • Optional: Basic meds. Not mandatory but can be useful in emergency encounters.

Time spent preparing: ~1–2 hours real-time depending on your scavenging route.

🏕️ Stage Two: Mountaineer’s Hut Stopover

Upon entering Timberwolf Mountain, head straight to the Mountaineer’s Hut by Crystal Lake.

  • Plan to sleep overnight. This hut isn’t warm, so build a long-lasting fire using available furniture or stored wood.
  • Use the time to repair gear, eat, and rest fully. Consider this your final base camp before the ascent.

✅ Inventory check at this point: ~40–50 lbs depending on food and firewood.

🧗 Stage Three: The Climb

🗺️ Route Overview

  1. Cross the valley toward the left side of the wing crash site.
  2. Enter Echo Ravine, pass the engine crash site.
  3. Sleep in the first warm cave (contains supplies).
  4. Climb the first rope after leaving the cave.
  5. Pass through wolf/bear territory. Make a quick fire + nap.
  6. Climb the second rope to the secluded shelf.
  7. Enter the mining cave, sleep overnight.
  8. Traverse the cave to the exit.
  9. Find and climb the third rope — the longest one.
  10. Reach the summit and enjoy your reward.

🔦 Key Areas and Navigation Notes

✈️ Engine Crash Site

  • Collect supplies with hacksaw.
  • Ignore the rope climb here — it’s not worth the fatigue.

🔥 Warm Cave

  • Sleep here overnight.
  • A small fire + hot coffee in the morning = smooth start.

🧗 First Rope

  • Full stamina is crucial. Rest beforehand. No need to stop midway.

🐺 Wolf/Bear Risk Zone

  • Detour left to avoid encounters.
  • Fire + rest spot just beyond this stretch.
  • Have your rifle ready.

✅ Pro tip: Clear the area before resting. Kill or scare off wildlife.

🛖 Secluded Shelf & Cave

  • After the second rope, find the cave entrance.
  • Sleep overnight here. Usually warm enough without a fire.

🕯️ Mining Cave Traverse

  • Use lantern.
  • Locate the corpse cavern, then take the right-side exit.
  • Crouch through the small wall opening.

🧗‍♂️ Final Rope

  • Longest climb. Rest midway on the ledge.
  • Use cleaning or harvesting to regenerate stamina.

🏔️ Reaching the Summit

At the summit:

  • Set a fire immediately.
  • Rest + eat to stabilize condition.
  • Then explore the crashed plane and stock up.

Expect massive loot — MREs, tools, gear, and distress flares.

Optional: If you found a spare rope, you can rig it on descent paths for shortcuts.

🧭 Summary Checklist

  • ✅ Rifle, ammo, hatchet, hacksaw
  • ✅ Lantern + fuel
  • ✅ Warm clothes + sewing kit
  • ✅ Bedroll
  • ✅ Fire gear + accelerant
  • ✅ Light food & water
