Reaching the summit of Timberwolf Mountain is one of the most iconic and rewarding goals in The Long Dark. This guide walks you through a reliable route to the top, aimed at Voyager difficulty — a balance between challenge and survivability. Whether you’re a first-time climber or just need a refresher, follow these steps to ascend with confidence.
🧰 Stage One: Preparation & Supplies
Start your run outside of Timberwolf Mountain so you can gather key supplies. A great starting region is Coastal Highway, due to its rich loot and direct access to Timberwolf via Pleasant Valley.
What to bring:
- Clothing: Scavenge the warmest clothes and repair with cloth + sewing kit.
- Weaponry: Rifle + ammunition highly recommended; cleaning kit optional.
- Food & Drink: A few canned meals, a can opener, coffee, ~2 liters of water.
- Fire Supplies: Hatchet, accelerant, a few firestarting items. Wood can be harvested on-site.
- Tools: Hacksaw (for crates), lantern (for caves), bedroll (never drop it!).
- Optional: Basic meds. Not mandatory but can be useful in emergency encounters.
Time spent preparing: ~1–2 hours real-time depending on your scavenging route.
🏕️ Stage Two: Mountaineer’s Hut Stopover
Upon entering Timberwolf Mountain, head straight to the Mountaineer’s Hut by Crystal Lake.
- Plan to sleep overnight. This hut isn’t warm, so build a long-lasting fire using available furniture or stored wood.
- Use the time to repair gear, eat, and rest fully. Consider this your final base camp before the ascent.
✅ Inventory check at this point: ~40–50 lbs depending on food and firewood.
🧗 Stage Three: The Climb
🗺️ Route Overview
- Cross the valley toward the left side of the wing crash site.
- Enter Echo Ravine, pass the engine crash site.
- Sleep in the first warm cave (contains supplies).
- Climb the first rope after leaving the cave.
- Pass through wolf/bear territory. Make a quick fire + nap.
- Climb the second rope to the secluded shelf.
- Enter the mining cave, sleep overnight.
- Traverse the cave to the exit.
- Find and climb the third rope — the longest one.
- Reach the summit and enjoy your reward.
