Welcome to the wild, colorful, and explosively chaotic world of Sunset Overdrive. If you’re just getting started, this guide will help you get a grip on the fast-paced movement, deadly enemies, and wild weaponry that define the experience. Below are a collection of practical tips and tricks to help you get up to speed—literally—and take control of the city with style.
Mastering Movement is the First Step to Survival
The number one rule in Sunset Overdrive is: keep moving. The sooner you learn how to fluidly traverse the city, the better your chances of survival. Early on, just take time to run around, grind rails, and wall run—pressing X to initiate and again to continue your wall movement. Whether it’s bouncing off cars, grinding power lines, or chaining it all together with some slick aerial maneuvers, traversal is your bread and butter. And remember, when in doubt, hit X. This rhythm of constant movement isn’t just flashy—it’s essential to staying alive.
Know Your Enemies and Pick the Right Weapon
Combat in Sunset Overdrive isn’t just about shooting—it’s about shooting smart. Different enemy types call for different weapons, and knowing what works best will save you time, ammo, and frustration.
- OD (Overcharge Drinkers): These are your bread-and-butter enemies. They come in waves and love swarming you. The High-Fidelity gun is your best friend here. It shoots fast, its rounds bounce between targets, and it melts through weak OD like butter.
- Poppers: These suicidal maniacs run at you and explode. Avoid using the High-Fidelity here. Instead, the Dirty Harry revolver or Flaming Compensator is more reliable. The Flaming Compensator can kill with one shot up close or two from afar, and it sets enemies ablaze, which adds damage over time.
- Herkers and Larger Beasts: For these guys, the best combo is the Freeze Bomb followed by the Flaming Compensator. Freeze them in place, light them up, then finish them with precision shots from Dirty Harry.
- Scabs (Gun-toting enemies): These human foes are dangerous, but manageable. Keep moving—grinding, bouncing, dodging—and use Dirty Harry. A single shot is often enough to down them, and movement is your best defense against their bullets.
Amp It Up: Early Amps and Best Loadouts
You’ll get access to Amps early on, and they’re game-changers. They add special effects to your weapons, and choosing the right ones is key.
- Bear Force One: Throw this on your High-Fidelity gun. It gives you a chance to drop TNTeddies (exploding teddy bears), which means more chaos and more crowd control.
- Freeze Bomb + Stun Round: This combination is great for freezing enemies and electrocuting them at the same time. It’s perfect for setting up big kills and disabling groups.
Get That Cash: Money and Energy Drink Farming
Money and Overcharge (energy drink) are your primary currencies. Luckily, there are many ways to rake in both while exploring:
- Break Stuff: Smash crates, vending machines, and other destructibles throughout the city to earn quick money and sometimes energy drinks.
- Rescue Survivors: Look for life raft rings on your map—these mark survivors you can help. Save them and they’ll reward you with large stacks of cash. They’re loaded.
- Loot Care Packages: Falling from the sky, these little boxes give off green smoke and are visible on your map. Get to them quickly—they often contain energy drinks and money.
- Lootable Trucks: White trucks with open roll-down doors are goldmines. Not all are lootable, but when you find one, it’s stuffed with money and Overcharge. Bigger trucks can’t be opened, but the smaller ones are worth checking.
- Random Encounters: Marked as little truck symbols on your map, these events can spawn loot trucks under attack by Scabs. Defeat the enemies and claim your rewards—either Overcharge, cash, or both.
Level Up Your Weapons Efficiently
Weapon progression matters, and one of the best ways to farm XP is to take advantage of Overcharge trucks. These constantly attract OD, so if you’ve got a low-level weapon, swap to it and use the chaos to gain fast XP. If your Freeze Bomb is underpowered, this is your moment—farm OD here while they drink from the back of the truck.
Final Advice for Becoming a Badass
To thrive in Sunset Overdrive, stay mobile, experiment with your loadout, and always look for opportunities to collect resources. Chain your parkour skills, keep your eyes on the map for care packages and survivors, and use every tool at your disposal to control the battlefield. With the right weapon in hand and a few explosions behind you, you’ll go from rookie to total badass in no time.
Now get out there and show Sunset City who’s boss.
