Getting started in The Riftbreaker can feel overwhelming with its mix of base building, tower defense, and ARPG combat. If you’re heading into your first run—or want to optimize after stumbling through your early hours—this guide is packed with essential insights to smooth your journey and keep your mech running at peak efficiency.

1. Build Self-Sustaining Mining Outposts Your main base will likely be your hub for major operations, but the planet is dotted with resource nodes waiting to be tapped. Rather than tethering every mine to your base, create isolated, self-sustaining mining outposts. Each outpost only needs basic energy and minimal defenses. For energy, you can use two wind turbines or the more efficient setup: two solar panels and a single battery. This combo ensures power stability throughout the entire day-night cycle. Add a teleporter, some walls, and a few towers, and you’re set. It’s a low-maintenance system that dramatically accelerates your resource income and gives you fast travel options around the map.

2. Sell Resources Before Enemy Attacks When the enemy’s coming, you get a warning a few minutes in advance. If your outposts are between your base and the attack route, they’ll likely be targeted first. Don’t let your harvest go to waste—sell your resources from these outposts before they get hit. Set up storage facilities near your base, preferably behind walls. Send all sellable materials there so you retain them even if the outpost gets wrecked. After the attack, just rebuild—thanks to your efficient outpost design, it’ll only take minutes.

3. Use Decoy Walls to Delay Enemies Enemies will attack anything in their path, so use this to your advantage. Place disconnected walls outside your main perimeter to act as decoys. This distracts enemies and buys your towers extra time to fire, reducing the pressure on your primary defenses. For even better results, leave gaps between layers of your perimeter wall to reduce damage from AOE attacks. Randomized outer walls can slow enemies enough for you to mop them up before they ever reach your base proper.

4. Wall Mechanics and Line of Sight Understanding wall interactions is key. You can shoot through level one walls but not through level two. If you want to stay protected and still shoot from within your base, build steps or platforms to give you line-of-sight over the walls. It’s a small detail but makes a big difference when you’re defending alone.

5. Hold ALT to Build Upgraded Versions Save time by holding ALT while placing buildings to immediately deploy the highest level variant you’ve researched. This works for walls, extractors, solar panels, batteries—basically everything. No more waiting for basic versions to finish just so you can upgrade them. On consoles, this command may vary, so check your controller bindings.

6. Prioritize Small, Fast Research Projects There’s a range of mech suit upgrades and weapons that take mere seconds to research. Don’t skip over them. Some boost movement speed, reduce building costs, or add extra durability. Getting these early creates a compounding advantage that keeps paying off. It’s one of the best early-game investments.

7. Max Out Research Centers and Ammo Storage The more research centers you have (and the higher their level), the faster you unlock new tech. This is crucial because many powerful upgrades take time. Be sure you have the energy infrastructure to support them—solar panels and batteries are perfect for this. Likewise, max out your ammo storage. Towers burn through ammo in waves, and running dry mid-fight is a death sentence. Also, since ammo consumes materials, storing ammo is essentially storing resources in a usable form.

8. Use the Bio Scanner Religiously The green laser scanner lets you analyze flora, fauna, and mineral formations—and it’s mandatory for unlocking some of the game’s best tech. For instance, the railgun is locked behind scans in specific biomes. If you don’t scan the right species, those research paths remain hidden. So when entering a new biome, scan at least one of everything you see. It’s a hidden gatekeeping mechanic that can quietly block your progression.

9. Favor Solar Panels for Energy Production Solar panels are cheaper and produce more energy than wind turbines, making them ideal for your main power source. Just pair each panel with a battery so you have reliable power through the night. Wind turbines can supplement your system and are particularly handy during combat when power spikes from turret fire.

10. Contain the Green Glowing Plant Area Immediately This is a subtle but critical environmental warning: when you reach the biome filled with green glowing plants, contain it quickly. If left unchecked, it can spiral out of control and overwhelm the area. Build around it, isolate it, and don’t let it spread unchecked. You’ll thank yourself later.
