Survival mode on brutal difficulty in The Riftbreaker is an unforgiving challenge that will test your resource management, base defense, and quick thinking. If you’re aiming to push your limits and last longer on this hardcore setting, these 10 tips—plus a bonus—will give you the advantage you need to stay ahead of the alien onslaught.

1. Restart Until You Get a Good Map The very beginning of your survival attempt is critical. In the first minute or two, scout the area. If your landing zone doesn’t have at least two Carbonium deposits and one Ironium deposit nearby, restart the map. You’re better off finding a location that sets you up for early stability. Also, try to place your base near the center of the map rather than at the edges—this allows for multi-directional expansion and avoids situations where a wave can wipe out your entire infrastructure from one blind side.

2. Build More Storage When Full If your energy or material storage fills up, it’s not just a sign of success—it’s a red flag. Build additional energy storage to survive long nights without sunlight, and monitor your resource usage. Stockpiling too much Carbonium or Aeronium without spending it means you’re missing out on defensive upgrades or productivity improvements. Keep the flow of resources moving by expanding, upgrading, and building whenever you can.

3. Don’t Panic During the First Wave The first enemy wave often causes unnecessary panic. Instead of rushing to build towers and extensive walls, identify the direction the attack is coming from and quickly construct a wall (or double wall) in that direction. Then, use your mech to attack from behind the wall for an easy defense. It’s cost-effective and efficient in the early game.

4. Cancel Waves by Upgrading Your HQ Before the second wave hits, make sure your HQ is set up and your base is functional. Right before the wave spawns, upgrade your HQ. Doing so cancels the current wave and schedules a new one two minutes later. This buys you critical prep time and lets you shift the momentum back in your favor.

5. Arm Yourself Early Once your Armory is up, grab the shotgun as your first weapon—it’s extremely effective against swarming enemies in tight spaces. As you progress, also equip yourself with a grenade launcher and frag grenades. These tools will become essential for crowd control and surviving enemy rushes.

6. Expand After Each Wave Every time you survive a wave, don’t just rebuild—expand. Reestablish any lost factories, and if nothing was destroyed, use the calm to establish new mining operations. More income means more resources, and that means more towers, walls, and research capacity. Momentum is key in survival mode.

7. Maintain Spare AI Cores Always ensure you have a few spare AI cores before a wave. This lets you build extra towers quickly where you know enemies will attack. It’s a great way to adapt your defenses without slowing down other base functions or scrambling at the last second.

8. Radar Coverage Is Vital Placing radars across the map provides huge benefits. First, it prevents random enemy spawns in their radius. Second, it reveals valuable resource deposits. Third, it shows incoming enemy waves and their movement path, allowing for early defensive positioning. The earlier you can react, the stronger your response will be.

9. Energy Management Can Make or Break You Power is crucial, especially at night. If your energy balance dips into the negative, towers will become ineffective, and resource production halts. Always aim to have a surplus during the day with solar panels and back it up with ample batteries. Being caught without power during a wave is a recipe for disaster.

10. Know When to Build vs. Upgrade A final core gameplay mechanic often overlooked is the trade-off between building and upgrading. Instead of upgrading an existing orbital scanner, build a new one. Upgraded buildings pause their functionality during the process, and in survival mode, every second counts. Multiple scanners mean uninterrupted research and better progression.

Bonus Tip: Build Max-Level Structures Right Away Rather than constructing a level 1 building and upgrading it afterward, always hold ALT (or the console equivalent) to place the highest-level structure you’ve unlocked. This bypasses downtime, saves energy, and gets your infrastructure operational faster. It’s a small change that saves a lot of time in the long run.

These tips are specifically tailored to help you succeed in brutal difficulty survival mode, where every decision can be the difference between thriving or collapsing. Stay alert, build wisely, and keep expanding. The longer you last, the stronger your foothold becomes. Good luck out there—and don’t forget to build those extra batteries.
