Welcome to the apocalypse, survivors! I’m TheCandyMan, and this beginner-friendly guide will help you hit the ground running in State of Decay 2. Whether you’re new to the series or returning to brush up on the basics, these 10 essential tips will put your community on the path to survival.

1. Choose the Right Difficulty

State of Decay 2 offers five difficulty zones:

  • Green Zone – A relaxed sandbox experience ideal for newcomers.
  • Standard Zone – Balanced and recommended for first-time players.
  • Dread Zone – A step up in challenge for more seasoned survivors.
  • Nightmare Zone – For veterans seeking tough combat and resource scarcity.
  • Lethal Zone – The ultimate test of survival expertise.

Don’t worry—you can change the difficulty mid-game. Start with Standard or Dread and increase it as you gain confidence.

2. Choose the Right Survivors

Your starting three survivors matter:

  • Look for green traits (positive bonuses) and avoid red traits (negative effects).
  • Traits like Generous (+25% standing rewards) or Hard Worker are valuable.
  • Survivors have four core skills: CardioWitsFighting, and Shooting, plus a fifth optional skill like Cooking or Mechanics.
  • You can re-roll character choices until you find a trio that fits your playstyle.

3. Set Daily Goals

Big objectives can feel overwhelming—break them down:

  • Recruit a new survivor.
  • Secure an outpost or gather materials.
  • Upgrade a facility or take down a plague heart.

Short-term goals help maintain focus and steady community growth.

4. Customize Your Loadout

Always be prepared before leaving base:

  • Equip each survivor with a weapon, painkillers, and snacks (for stamina).
  • Travel light—leave space for loot.
  • Bring explosives, fire, and strong melee weapons when hunting plague hearts.

5. Vehicles Are Essential

Cars are survival tools:

  • Always carry repair kits and fuel.
  • Park backup vehicles at your base.
  • Use trunks for storage during scavenging runs.

A well-maintained vehicle can be the difference between life and death.

6. Loot Strategically

Make each run count:

  • Prioritize rucksacksweapons, and throwables.
  • Scavenge close to base or outposts to reduce travel time.
  • Load up your vehicle for bigger hauls.

7. Be a Good Neighbor

Enclaves are more than background NPCs:

  • Complete missions for them to build trust.
  • Friendly or allied enclaves offer trading bonuses and safe zones.
  • In emergencies, you can lead zombies to enclaves for assistance.

8. Leverage Outposts

Outposts are key to long-term survival:

  • Place them near valuable loot zones or plague hearts.
  • Choose resource outposts (food, meds, ammo) to balance your supply chain.
  • Use them to restockheal, or switch characters mid-mission.

9. Avoid Unnecessary Fights

Conserving stamina and supplies is crucial:

  • Avoid random zombie engagements whenever possible.
  • Game difficulty subtly increases as you kill more zombies.
  • Prioritize stealth, and eliminate freaks (e.g., Screamers) first when combat is unavoidable.

10. Attack with Purpose

When targeting plague hearts:

  • Tackle awakened plague hearts to avoid triggering multiple infestations.
  • Clear nearby zones methodically.
  • Eliminate freaks before engaging large hordes to reduce chaos.
