Introduction

Hey guys, my name is Big Man, and today we’re going to dive into movement techniques in It Takes Two. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to optimize your speedrun, these tips will help you move faster and more efficiently through the game. Let’s jump straight in!

Keyboard Controls and Bindings

  • Most people use the default bindings, plus Sprint on a side mouse button and sometimes Crouch on another side button. The key is to do what feels most comfortable for you.
  • Controller Layout: On Steam, you can find a layout titled “D-pad Functionality + Left Bumper Crouch,” allowing you to use the D-pad for movement, which ensures a perfect straight line and makes slide jumps easier.

Time Dashing

  • What is it? Time dashing involves inputting consecutive dashes with the correct timing. If done right, each dash gets a speed boost.
  • How to do it? You’ll know it’s working when a gust of air appears behind your character. If you dash too soon or too late, you’ll only perform a regular dash.

Slide Jumping

  • What is it? A slide jump is when you jump while in your sliding animation. It’s a technique that allows you to reach areas otherwise unreachable.
  • How to do it? First, Sprint and then hold Crouch. While holding Crouch, input a jump. Remember to hold the jump button to reach maximum height.
  • Common Mistakes:
    • If you don’t hold Crouch until after you jump, you’ll perform a tiny jump instead.
    • Slide jumping won’t work on slopes or certain types of ground.
    • Don’t jump too late off a ledge, or you’ll just slide off instead of performing a slide jump.

Types of Slide Jumps

  1. Sprint Slide Jump: The quickest and most useful, but requires more space.
  2. Dash Slide Jump: Input a dash and hold Crouch, then jump early during the slide for max distance. It’s trickier but covers more ground.
  3. Frog Slide Jump: Use the frog jump (dash + jump at the same time), then hold Crouch in the air. This method gives the longest distance but requires more space.
  4. Buffered Slide Jump (BSL): Used in tight spaces. Hold Crouch, jump, and dash into a small spot to enter the sliding animation briefly.

Momentum and Sliding

  • Building Momentum: When sliding down a steep slope, you can repeatedly jump to build up speed.
  • Handling in the Air: Once you jump or dash in the air, you lose all momentum, so timing is essential.
  • Oyster Slide Jump: Perform a slide jump while sliding down an extremely slanted slope for high-speed launches.

False Sliding

  • What is it? Slide off slanted ledges, then keep holding Crouch to launch yourself into a slide jump with significant speed.
  • FPS Impact: Higher FPS can increase speed, while lower FPS can make launches more consistent on specific ledges.

Rail Grinding

  • Techniques:
    • Dash to boost speed on rails.
    • Jump off the rail in the direction you’re holding.
    • Perform Dash jumps or backwards jumps to gain speed (useful for certain tricks).
    • Rail Cancelling: Dash, then immediately press cancel to accumulate speed.
    • Slide Jump Off Rails: Hold Crouch before grabbing a rail to enable a slide jump after landing.

Ledge Grabs

  • Options: You can jump left, right, forward, or backward while grabbing a ledge. You can also pull yourself up or drop down.
  • Wall Grabs: Similar to ledge grabs but with fewer movement options.

Ground Pound Jumping

  • How to Perform: Ground pound, jump, press Crouch, then jump again to skip the animation and save time.

Conclusion

These movement techniques will help you speed through It Takes Two with ease. Keep practicing these methods, and you’ll be zipping through levels like a pro! Feel free to share your favorite movement tips in the comments, and join our community Discord for more speedrunning insights.
