The Greatsword is the fifth and final weapon in Death’s Door. While it may not be entirely hidden, obtaining it requires solving a clever environmental puzzle. This guide walks you through every step to unlock this high-damage weapon.

Prerequisites

Before you can access the Greatsword, you must first unlock the following abilities:

  • Hookshot
  • Bomb

These are acquired as part of the main story, so complete the relevant sections before attempting to find the Greatsword.

Step 1: Travel to the Stranded Sailor

Head to the Stranded Sailor, the third major area in the game and the hub for reaching Betty, one of the key bosses.

Once there:

  1. Cross the docks.
  2. Look in the upper-right section to spot the Greatsword behind a locked gate.
  3. Read the nearby plaque—it hints that four hidden switches must be activated to unlock the gate.

Step 2: Locate and Activate the Four Hidden Switches

Each switch is tucked behind a destructible wall. You’ll need to solve environmental clues and use your Bomb ability to uncover them.

Switch 1 – Under the Stairs

  • Backtrack across the docks and go underneath the stairs.
  • Use the Bomb to destroy the cracked wall.
  • Activate the switch inside and read the next clue.

Switch 2 – Between Twin Columns

  • Go up the stairs and take the left path.
  • Find two large stone columns.
  • Bomb the nearby wall to reveal the passage.
  • Flip the switch and examine the new clue.

Switch 3 – Behind the Giant Face

  • Climb higher and locate a large carved stone face.
  • Drop down, cross the bridge, and ascend again.
  • Bomb the wall near the stone face to access the third switch.

Switch 4 – Beneath the Gargoyle

  • Head to the top-right corner of the Stranded Sailor.
  • Rotate the camera to reveal a hidden gargoyle statue above a destructible wall.
  • Blow up the wall to reach the final switch.

Step 3: Unlock the Greatsword

Once all four switches are activated:

  1. Return to the Greatsword gate near the docks.
  2. Pull the nearby lever.
  3. Step inside and claim your reward!

Bonus Tip: Magic Shrine Nearby

From the area with the gargoyle switch:

  • Drop down the ledge.
  • Follow the hidden path underground.
  • You’ll find a Magic Shrine, which increases your maximum magic capacity.

Is the Greatsword Worth Using?

The Reaper’s Greatsword offers:

  • +25% damage multiplier
  • Extended reach

However, it comes with trade-offs:

  • Only two-swing combos
  • Slower attack speed compared to the standard sword

It’s great for high-damage bursts, but if you prefer speed and fluidity, the Reaper’s Sword may remain your best choice.

Final Thoughts

Unlocking the Greatsword is both a satisfying puzzle and a powerful addition to your arsenal. Even if it doesn’t suit your playstyle, it’s worth collecting for completion and achievement purposes.
