Introduction

Doors in Prison Architect serve different purposes based on security levels, accessibility, and prison management. Understanding how each door type functions and how to automate them efficiently can greatly improve your prison’s security and workflow.

Types of Doors

1. Regular Door

  • Can be opened by anyone, including prisoners.
  • Best used for common rooms and areas where security is not a concern.

2. Staff Door

  • Can only be opened by staff members (e.g., cooks, janitors, guards).
  • Suitable for rooms like storage areas, kitchens, and staff-only facilities.

3. Jail Door

  • Requires a guard to open and close.
  • Five times as tough as a regular door.
  • Ideal for prisoner cells and controlled access points.

4. Solitary Door

  • Three times as tough as a jail door.
  • Used for solitary confinement cells to ensure secure isolation.

5. Door Secure

  • As strong as a solitary door but requires a guard to open.
  • Often used for high-security areas and prison entrances.

6. Remote Door

  • Can only be opened using a Door Servo.
  • Three times as tough as a jail door.
  • Requires a power source and a Door Control System to function.
  • Ideal for maximum security zones and entrance airlocks.

Setting Up Remote Door Control

To effectively automate doors, follow these steps:

Step 1: Build a Security Room

  • Go to Rooms and designate a Security Room.
  • Install a Door Control System inside.
  • Assign a guard to operate the system.

Step 2: Install Door Servos

  • Place a Door Servo above each door you want to automate.
  • If a door is locked, manually open it temporarily to allow workers to install the servo.

Step 3: Connect the Door Servos

  • Click on the Door Control System.
  • Select Connect and click on each Door Servo.
  • Ensure you unpause the game so the connections register.
  • You can also connect servos through Utilities > Connect to link multiple doors at once.

Step 4: Optimize Door Control Systems

  • Each Door Control System can manage multiple doors but can only open two doors at a time.
  • Avoid overloading a single system to prevent bottlenecks.
  • If you see delays in door openings, distribute connections across multiple systems.

Choosing Between Remote Doors and Door Secure

FeatureRemote DoorDoor Secure
SecurityHighest (cannot be opened with stolen keys)Lower (prisoners with stolen keys can escape)
Power DependencyYes (fails when power is out)No (works even without power)
Manual OverrideRequires manual opening or power restorationCan be opened by guards manually

Which One Should You Use?

  • Remote Doors: Best for high-security areasairlocks, and preventing riots from causing mass escapes.
  • Door Secure: Preferred if you don’t want power failures to cripple your prison’s movement.
  • Hybrid Approach: Use Door Secure for main entrances and Remote Doors for segregated maximum-security zones.

Conclusion

Effective door management in Prison Architect is crucial for maintaining security and operational efficiency. By choosing the right doors and automating them wisely, you can prevent escapes, reduce congestion, and keep your prison running smoothly.
