Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance has finally made its way to PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, bringing with it a host of new features and quality-of-life updates. After spending a considerable amount of time exploring the PC version, I’ve put together a list of what I think are the 11 best new additions to the game.
Disclaimer: These are my personal picks for the best new features in SMT V: Vengeance. Your favorites might differ, so feel free to share your own in the comments!
1. Higher Resolution and Frame Rates
One of the most noticeable improvements is the enhanced resolution and frame rates on platforms other than the Nintendo Switch. While the original SMT V on Switch was capped at 30 FPS, the new version offers 60 FPS with higher resolution, making the game look crisper and more detailed. Even on a mid-range PC, the game runs flawlessly, bringing the stunning art style and world design to life.
2. Faster Loading Times
Loading times have been significantly reduced across all platforms. Transitioning between different areas, demon realms, and using lay lines feels snappier, allowing players to get back into the action faster. This improvement greatly enhances the flow of exploration and combat.
3. Save Anywhere
Gone are the days of being stuck at lay lines to save your progress. The new save-anywhere feature is a blessing, especially for busy players who need to log off unexpectedly. Those who prefer the challenge of save points can still opt to save only at lay lines.
4. New Story Path: The Canon of Vengeance
The Canon of Vengeance introduces a massive 80-hour campaign with a new protagonist, Yoko Hamina, and a fresh set of antagonists known as the Kadist. This path feels almost like a sequel, offering a fresh take on the story with extensive content, side quests, and character development.
5. Guest Characters in Combat
Players can now battle alongside guest characters like Yoko, Ichiro, and Yuzu. These characters act as temporary party members with their own spells and attacks, adding variety and strategy to battles. However, they cannot be permanently added to your party, so building a strong demon team remains crucial.
6. Demon Huts
Demon Huts offer a new way to interact with your demons outside of battle. Accessed through lay lines, these areas allow you to receive items and buffs from your demons, enhancing the bond with your team and adding a bit of extra flavor to the game.
7. Faster Combat and Auto Skills
Combat now features a 2x speed option for spell animations and an Auto Skill feature that intelligently selects skills based on enemy weaknesses. This makes grinding and random encounters less tedious, allowing players to focus on tougher fights.
8. Magatsu Rails
These new traversal options make exploring the world faster and more enjoyable. Hidden paths and shortcuts accessed via Magatsu Rails reward players who love to explore every corner of the map.
9. Smoother Demon Fusion
The Diad Compendium Fusion system simplifies the process of fusing demons, offering clearer options and multiple fusion paths. With over 40 new demons added to the roster, it’s easier than ever to build your ideal team.
10. Recommended Subquest Levels
Subquests now display recommended levels, helping players manage their progression more effectively. This simple but crucial addition prevents players from stumbling into quests they aren’t prepared for.
11. Batch Using Growth Items
No more using items one by one. The new batch-use feature for growth items saves a lot of time, especially when leveling up newly acquired demons.
Conclusion
With these additions, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance not only improves upon its predecessor but also sets a new standard for the series. Whether you’re a returning fan or a newcomer, these quality-of-life upgrades and new content make this a must-play RPG. Stay tuned for more guides and tips!
