Elemental particles are essential for enchanting in Outward Definitive Edition, but acquiring them can be a tedious task due to their low drop rates. These particles come in various types: Fire, Decay, Ethereal, Ice, and Light, each dropped by different Elemental creatures scattered across Aurai. In this guide, we’ll cover the best methods to efficiently farm these particles and some tips to make the grind less painful.

1. Farming Light Particles at Voltaic Hatchery

Location: Near the exit to Berg in the Chersonese region.

Method:

  • Head to the Voltaic Hatchery and locate the Golden Matriarch. This boss respawns every 7 days outside the region despite being a mini-boss.
  • Defeating the Golden Matriarch guarantees a Light Particle drop every time.

Strategy Tip: Use a Dark Varnish to exploit its weakness and farm it efficiently. This method is far more reliable than other light particle farming techniques.

2. The Clock Tower Puzzle in Antique Plateau

Location: Antique Plateau region.

Overview:

  • The Clock Tower Puzzle is one of the best ways to farm all types of particles but also one of the most frustrating.
  • fire at the Clock Tower displays one of five colors, each representing a different elemental particle.
  • To progress, find and defeat Elementals of the corresponding color based on the fire’s hue.

Challenges:

  • Elemental spawn locations are randomized within a wide area, requiring substantial exploration.
  • The fire can bug out, causing it to stop displaying colors, making the quest impossible to complete without a region reset.

Solution:

  • If the fire bugs out, try:
    • Sleeping for a few hours.
    • Returning to town and coming back.
    • Restarting the game.
  • To maximize efficiency, defeat all five Elementals without leaving the region. This triggers a bonus spawn of one of each Elemental at Duet Plaza, each guaranteed to drop at least one particle.

Strategy Tip: Carry plenty of stamina and elemental varnishes for dealing with different types of Elementals effectively.

3. Rusted Vengeance Questline

Location: Antique Plateau.

Overview:

  • Completing the Rusted Vengeance questline rewards you with one of each type of particle upon defeating the final boss.
  • The dungeons in this quest are packed with Elementals, providing a substantial number of particles during the quest.

Strategy Tip: Prepare with plenty of varnishes and elemental resistance buffs to handle the high number of Elementals.

4. Mini-Boss Farming

  • Certain mini-bosses around Aurai have a chance to drop particles.
  • While not guaranteed, they offer a supplementary way to farm particles as you explore.

Strategy Tip: Prioritize dungeons with multiple mini-bosses to increase your chances.

5. Purifying Quartz Farming

What it’s For: Used for high-tier enchantments and has a very low drop rate.

Main Source:

  • Quartz Elemental in The Grotto of Cherty and Cal.
    • Drops 5 Purifying Quartz upon defeat.
    • Does not respawn.

Strategy Tip: Use fire-based attacks to exploit its weaknesses for a quick fight.

Legacy Chest Trick for Early Enchanting

  • Strategy:
    • Enchant gear on an older character.
    • Place the enchanted gear into a Legacy Chest.
    • Retrieve the gear on a new character to bypass the early-game enchantment grind.

Strategy Tip: Plan your legacy items in advance to maximize the efficiency of this trick.

Conclusion

Farming elemental particles in Outward is a grind, but focusing on specific locations and strategies can make the process more manageable. The Voltaic Hatchery offers a reliable source of light particles, while the Clock Tower Puzzle—despite its flaws—remains the best method for farming multiple particle types. For those tackling the Rusted Vengeance questline, expect to come out with a decent supply of particles to kickstart your enchanting.

Prepare well, plan your routes, and let the enchantments flow—good luck, adventurer!
