Hunting in Don’t Starve Together is an often-overlooked mechanic that can provide a steady source of food, crafting materials, and even powerful tamed creatures. Whether you’re tracking a Koalefant for its valuable trunk, taking down a Varg for an infinite hound farm, or avoiding the infuriating Yucas, understanding the hunting system is key to survival. In this guide, we’ll break down how to track creatures, what rewards to expect, and how to turn hunting into an advantage.

Tracking the Hunt: Finding Suspicious Dirt Piles

To begin a hunt, you must locate a Suspicious Dirt Pile, a naturally spawning track that leads you toward an animal. Each hunt consists of 6-12 tracks, and the direction of the track points toward the next one.

Tips for Effective Tracking:

  • Act quickly – Tracks disappear if ignored too long.
  • Watch for character cues – Your character will notify you when you’re close to the target.
  • Stay persistent – The creature at the end of the trail is worth the effort.

Once you complete a hunt, one of three possible creatures will appear: Koalefant, Varg, or Yucas. The odds of finding each increase over time, so be prepared for tougher fights as your world progresses.

Koalefant: A Reliable Source of Meat and Warmth

The Koalefant is a skittish, beefalo-like creature with 1,000 HP. Unlike aggressive mobs, it will run away upon spotting the player, making it crucial to chase it into obstacles or the edge of the map to corner it.

Hunting Strategy:

  1. Chase it strategically – Running it into a wall makes catching it easier.
  2. Bait out its attack – You can land 5-6 hits per cycle.
  3. Repeat until defeated – It won’t fight back, making the kill relatively easy.

Koalefant Drops:

  • 8 Meat – A fantastic food source.
  • Koalefant Trunk – Can be used for high-value food or crafting warm clothing.

Koalefant Trunk Uses: Food and Warm Gear

Eating the Trunk:

  • Raw: 37.5 Hunger, 30 Health.
  • Cooked: 75 Hunger, 40 Health (better healing).

Crafting Warm Clothing:

  1. Breezy Vest (Standard Koalefant Trunk + 8 Silk)
    • 60 Insulation – Provides mild warmth.
    • +2 Sanity per minute.
    • Protects against wetness.
  2. Puffy Vest (Winter Koalefant Trunk + 2 Beefalo Wool)
    • 240 Insulation – One of the best winter items.
    • Same sanity and wetness protection.
    • Paired with a Beefalo Hat, guarantees survival in winter.

Varg: The Pack Leader

Unlike the Koalefant, the Varg is a combat-focused beast with 1,800 HP. The chance of encountering one starts at 2.5% on Day 1 and increases to 16.5% by Day 100.

Why Vargs Are Dangerous:

  • Spawns 2 Hounds per howl.
  • Can quickly overwhelm solo players.

Varg Fighting Strategy:

  • Bring armor and healing items.
  • Use Pigs or other allies to help.
  • Avoid getting surrounded by Hounds.
  • Sleep Dart or Telelocator Staff can be used to relocate the Varg for farming purposes.

Varg Farming for Infinite Hound Loot:

  • If you cage a Varg, it will continuously spawn Hounds.
  • Can be used for renewable hound teeth, monster meat, and gems.
  • Beware: Seasonal Vargs spawn Fire or Ice Hounds.

Yucas: The Annoying Hunter’s Nightmare

The Yucas is a rarer hostile creature with a 5% chance of spawning on Day 1, increasing to 33% by Day 100. Though it only has 1,200 HP, it is arguably more frustrating than the Varg due to its stunning mucus attack.

Why Yucas Is a Pain:

  • Spits mucus that immobilizes players.
  • Follows up with rapid kicks to the face.
  • Breaks free randomly, limiting counterattacks.

Best Ways to Kill a Yucas:

  1. Use Pigs as backup – Pigs will free you from mucus faster.
  2. Tank with Wigfrid – Her resistance makes her ideal for this fight.
  3. Keep your distance – Avoid getting caught in the mucus attack.

Useless Drop: Phlegm

  • Provides 12.5 Hunger, but costs 15 Sanity.
  • Has no crafting, fuel, or fertilizer use.
  • Arguably one of the most pointless items in the game.

Steel Wool and Its Uses

Unlike Phlegm, Steel Wool from Vargs has actual uses, including:

  • War Saddle: Adds 16 damage to a Beefalo’s attacks.
  • Brush: Increases Beefalo taming progress and yields Beefalo Fur once per day.
  • Pet Crafting: Used to spawn a unique critter pet.

Why Hunting Is Essential in Don’t Starve Together

Many players underestimate the importance of hunting, but as shown, it provides:

  • Sustainable meat sources.
  • Warm clothing for winter survival.
  • Renewable hound loot via Varg farms.
  • Taming and improving Beefalo companions.
  • An engaging way to break up farming and base-building.

If you aren’t hunting, you’re missing out on crucial survival tools. Grab your weapons, start tracking, and enjoy the thrill of the hunt!

Happy Hunting!
