This guide covers the essential basics for learning how to play Spear in Brawlhalla, including approach options, combos, kill setups, and dodge reads.
Approach Options
Approaching correctly is key to landing your combos. These are Spear’s main approach tools:
- Neutral Light (NLight): Safe, quick poke. Dash to increase range.
- Side Light (SLight): Primary combo starter. Dash into it for longer reach.
- Side Air (SAir): Good for approaching in the air. Can be fast-falled for varied angles. Leads into NLight at low damage.
- Neutral Air (NAir): Less optimal for combos but strong for positioning and stage control.
- Down Air (DAir): Used more defensively or to land safely when above your opponent.
Use a mix of these to keep your approach unpredictable.
Basic Combos
- Side Light > Down Light > Side Air (SL > DL > SAir): Bread-and-butter combo.
- Side Light > Down Light (GC) > Down Light > Side Air: Requires a dodge read. Use gravity cancel (GC) after first DL.
- Side Air > Neutral Light: Situational, good when approaching with SAir.
These cover most damage builds and set up edgeguards or kill confirms.
Dodge Reads
Understanding and punishing dodge options is the most critical part of Spear gameplay.
- Neutral Dodge: Delay second Down Light slightly before continuing the combo.
- Up Dodge: Jump into Down Light > Side Air.
- Down Dodge: Go for Side Light > Side Light > DL > SAir.
- Side Dodge (Left/Right): Dash or step in the direction they dodge, then input DL > SAir.
- Diagonal Dodges (Up/Down + Left/Right): Track them with a jump or short dash before continuing the combo.
Once you’ve identified their dodge habit, punish consistently with the optimal DL > SAir string.
Kill Options
- Down Light > Side Air: Best kill confirm, especially with dodge reads.
- Recovery: Viable off the top after a neutral air or anti-air read.
- Edgeguards: Use NAir, SAir, and Recovery to intercept opponents recovering low or diagonally.
