Welcome back to Team Neutrix! I’m your host Live Jerry, and in today’s guide, we’re diving deep into how to dodge properly and how to effectively read your opponents in Brawlhalla so you can win more games, gain more ELO, and push through the ranked ladder. Whether you’re a new Gold player or a mid-level Plat, this guide will equip you with the essential fundamentals of dodging and reading.
Understanding the Types of Dodges
There are nine types of directional dodges in Brawlhalla:
- Spot dodge (no direction)
- Up
- Down
- Left
- Right
- Diagonal up-left
- Diagonal up-right
- Diagonal down-left
- Diagonal down-right
Visualize these as points around a circle. This awareness helps you prepare for how players might react in different situations.
Common Dodge Habits by ELO
- Gold to Low Plat players often default to dodging in or dodging up.
- Use this knowledge to condition your reads around those dodges.
- For example: If you’re punishing with gauntlets, set the bot to dodge in and test which attacks catch that option.
How to Practice Reads
- Start by setting the training bot’s dodge direction to common options like in or up.
- Practice punishing each direction with your character’s toolkit.
- Once comfortable, switch the bot to random dodge.
- Focus on recognizing dodge patterns quickly during real fights.
Important: Reading your opponent isn’t about guessing. It’s about identifying patterns.
Pattern Recognition
Players might dodge in a pattern:
- Example: Out > Out > Up > Out > Up
- Watch closely: What do they do after getting hit by side light or down light?
- Track where your hits land and how they react.
Create mental notes while you play. If you catch them spot dodging often after a certain move, store that info and bait it later.
Use Your Movement to Force a Dodge
- Dash toward them and back away to bait a reaction.
- Close in and fake an attack to provoke a panic dodge.
- If they dodge preemptively, you gain information and control.
Applying pressure without attacking can tell you more than attacking mindlessly.
Developing Consistency
Master your true combos until they become second nature.
- Example: Down light > Dair on gauntlets — hit it 50 times until it’s automatic.
- Once confident in your true strings, build reads from there.
Don’t guess blindly. Establish guaranteed hits first, then adapt based on dodge behavior.
Improving Your Own Dodging
- Avoid falling into predictable patterns.
- Don’t always dodge the same way after getting hit.
- Subconscious dodging (always away, always in) gets punished easily.
Make your dodging intelligent and reactive. Mix your direction, delay your dodge, or even use fast fall movement before dodging.
Training vs. Live Matches
- Training mode is great for developing technical knowledge.
- But live matches are where you refine your ability to adapt on the fly.
- Queue into ranked or spar with others. Track what works. Track what gets punished.
Tip: Watch replays! Every time you get punished, ask:
- Could I have dodged differently?
- Did I create a predictable pattern?
- How can I avoid this next time?
Final Thoughts
- There are nine dodge directions for a reason. Use all of them.
- This game rewards mental fortitude, adaptability, and strategy.
- Mix your dodges, read theirs. Apply pressure, stay calm, and always be learning.
