Welcome to your no-fluff guide on how progression works in Biomutant. After extensive time with the game, this breakdown covers all major systems to help you optimize your character and gameplay experience.

1. Biogenetics: Mutations & Utility Powers

These are akin to spells and come in handy depending on your playstyle. No class restrictions apply, and they can be unlocked using Bio-Blob resources.

  • Combat Utility: Skills like Fungi (deploy a mushroom to bounce) or Mucus Bubble (bubble shield) are great for mobility and crowd control.
  • Unlocking: Found throughout the world, Bio-Blobs are essential for unlocking mutations and resistance upgrades.

2. Upgrading Environmental Resistances

You can invest Bio-Blobs into upgrading your resistances to Heat, Cold, Biohazard, and Radiation.

  • Upgrade Cost: Starts at 1 Bio-Blob per 10% resistance but increases as you invest more.
  • Maxing Out: At 100%, you are completely immune to that zone’s hazard, freeing you to keep your best combat gear equipped.

3. Psi Powers & Aura System

These powers are tied to your Light/Dark Aura and function more like magical abilities.

  • Unlocking: Requires Psi Points and an appropriate amount of Light or Dark alignment.
  • Gaining Aura Points:
    • Interacting with critters: choose to save (light) or kill (dark)
    • Dialogue choices
    • Helping or harming captives
    • Visiting shrines (grants fixed Light or Dark points)

4. Upgrade Points: Perks & Wung-Fu Abilities

You earn Upgrade Points via leveling up or finding codexes. They are used in two key ways:

a. Perks

  • General perks apply to all characters.
  • Class-specific perks are based on your starting class (e.g., Saboteur = dodge/energy perks).

b. Wung-Fu Abilities

  • Unlock special combat moves for each weapon type.
  • Used to trigger Super Wung-Fu, a powerful state.
  • Only invest in weapon types you actively use.

5. Stat Progression

Every level-up gives you 10 attribute points to invest in:

  • Vitality – Increases HP and armor
  • Strength – Increases melee damage
  • Intellect – Boosts energy regen and Psi power
  • Agility – Affects movement and dodge speed
  • Charisma – Affects dialogue checks and merchant prices
  • Luck – Boosts critical hit chance and loot quality

TipLuck is one of the most powerful early-game investments, especially when paired with ranged builds. Better loot means faster progression and stronger crafting potential.

Final Thoughts

Biomutant allows for extremely flexible character growth. Though classes offer some early-game perks, you’re never locked into one build. Mix and match as you go, experiment, and evolve your mutant into whatever you envision.
