Biomutant may begin with you in the fuzzy paws of a rodent-like protagonist, but don’t let its cutesy appearance fool you—this is a vast, open-world action RPG full of systems, secrets, and scattered objectives. With so many paths to follow, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed in the early hours. This guide breaks down the nine most important things you should do first to set yourself up for a smoother, more rewarding journey through the apocalypse.

1. Choose Your Build (But Don’t Overthink It)

The character creator in Biomutant can feel a little intimidating at first. You’re asked to pick your breed, genetic structure, resistances, fur style, color, and class. What really matters, though, is choosing a general playstyle direction:

  • Melee/Tank: Focus on Vitality and Strength; choose Saboteur or Sentinel.
  • Ranged Combat: Pump Agility; Dead-Eye or Commando are great picks.
  • Magic/Psionic: Go for Intellect and choose Psi-Freak.

Luckily, none of this is set in stone. Biomutant is about evolution. You’ll be able to tweak and build towards any style as you progress. So don’t stress—just pick what feels fun and get going.

2. Follow the Main Quest (At Least for a While)

After the roughly hour-long tutorial, you’re free to explore—but staying on the main quest early on pays off. You’ll:

  • Unlock key tools like your mech.
  • Meet important NPCs who offer high-reward side quests.
  • Access easier zones thanks to the tailored difficulty curve.

Going off the beaten path too early can mean stumbling into difficult enemies or locked zones. So stick with the story until you’re properly geared and ready.

3. Get the Biosuit ASAP

Once you’re feeling confident, head toward any green gas cloud to trigger the quest for the Biosuit. This should be your first environmental suit because it grants access to Bionucleus 6D—a key early area:

  • Located northeast of Mercadorpus Outpost.
  • Enemies here always drop bio points.
  • Bio points let you unlock mutations, perks, and resistance upgrades.

Plus, the loot is solid, and the area is manageable with the suit. Some of the mutations even have awesome visual flair.

4. Go on Monster Hunts (Talk to Moog)

As you follow the main quest, you’ll meet Moog, a quirky NPC who sends you on monster hunts. These quests lead to:

  • Vault keys, which open chests with top-tier gear.
  • Loot that can define your mid-to-late game build.
  • Bonus: Moog gets delighted if you bring him monster poop. Yes, really.

5. Collect All Environmental Suits

The Biosuit is just one of several hazard-protection outfits. Each time you run into an environmental threat (e.g., heat, cold, radiation), you’ll unlock a quest for the corresponding suit. These quests involve:

  • Activating a satellite beacon.
  • Clearing out an enemy area.

Once obtained, these suits massively open up the map, letting you explore gated zones and farm valuable resources without worrying about dying from the elements.

6. Upgrade the Clonk Fist and Clawbar

The Clonk Fist and Clawbar let you access hidden rooms and blocked paths—but they need to be upgraded to reach the best loot.

  • As soon as you find an inaccessible area, you’ll unlock the upgrade quest.
  • Don’t delay this—you’ll regret missing secrets due to weak tools.

Do this early and you’ll maximize your treasure hunts.

7. Learn How to Trigger Super Wung-Fu

Combat can be a bit chaotic, but Super Wung-Fu mode is a game-changer if you know how to use it:

  • Execute three different special moves to fill your Wung-Fu meter.
  • These must be upgrade-point unlocked techniques, unique to each weapon type.
  • Example: Use Drunken Ant (1H weapon), Crane Dance (gun), then Cat’s Cyclone.

Once the meter is full, press R1 + L1 to activate Super Wung-Fu Mode—turning you into a stylish, multi-hitting whirlwind of destruction.

8. Capture Outposts Early

Capturing outposts isn’t just about territory control—it also gives you access to an upgrade bench.

  • Spend collected materials to improve your weapons and gear.
  • Keeps you ahead of the difficulty curve.
  • Easy way to grab EXP and faction rep.

Make a habit of checking back at outposts to fine-tune your loadout.

9. Explore, Explore, Explore

Lastly—and maybe most importantly—get curious. Biomutant’s map is packed with things to find:

  • Mini puzzles
  • Hidden gear stashes
  • Unmarked encounters
  • Off-the-path lore bits

While these nine tips will keep you focused early on, the heart of the game is in exploration. So when you feel ready, strike off in a direction and see what the post-human world throws at you.

From bio-punk magic to kung-fu combat, Biomutant rewards players who prep smart and explore relentlessly. So grab your sword, your mutations, and your mech, and go wild.

For everything else Biomutant, keep your claws sharp and your curiosity sharper.
