So you want to build an elite mercenary company in Battle Brothers—one filled with absolute monsters on the battlefield, or as they’re affectionately known in the community, “God Bros.” Whether you’re going for a nimble tank, a heavy frontliner, or a deadly duelist, the key is recruitment—and this guide walks you through how to find those rare, high-stat legends.

There are two main paths to getting God Bros: buying the best backgrounds or gambling on cheap ones. Let’s break both down.

1. The High-End Route: Buying Elite Backgrounds

The most straightforward (but expensive) way to get God Bros is to recruit characters with top-tier backgrounds:

  • Hedge Knight
  • Oath Taker
  • Adventurous Noble
  • Swordmaster
  • Sellsword

These backgrounds come with high base stats and often solid gear, making them battle-ready right out of the gate. For example, a Hedge Knight might have excellent HP, fatigue, resolve, melee skill, and melee defense.

But here’s the catch: even these premium recruits can roll poorly on crucial stats like melee attack or defense. And since they can cost several thousand crowns, you risk dumping a ton of gold into a recruit who ends up mediocre.

That’s the trade-off—you get reliability in some stats (like HP/fatigue), but not always the killer numbers in offense or defense. And God Bros are all about those max rolls.

2. The Gambling Route: Low-Cost, High-Reward Backgrounds

This path is cheaperriskier, and—frankly—more fun. The idea here is to recruit cheap background characters like:

  • Militia
  • Thieves
  • Brawlers
  • Farmhands
  • Houndmasters

You pay a fraction of the cost (100–500 crowns), and while most will be junk, some will be absolute gems—the mythical low-cost God Bro. What you’re looking for are:

  • High base melee skill and melee defense
  • Good traits (Iron Lungs, Bloodthirsty, etc.)
  • 3 stars in key stats (especially melee attack and melee defense)

Take for example a Militia recruit with Iron Lungs and 3 stars in both melee skill and melee defense. He may cost under 1,000 crowns, but he’s going to end up with stats that rival or exceed a Hedge Knight.

Or a Thief with three stars in melee skill—great nimble tank material, especially if they roll well on fatigue and defense.

You won’t find one every day, but when you do? That’s your Mr. Perfect.

Side-by-Side Comparison: Cost vs. Value

BackgroundCostRiskPotential Ceiling
Hedge Knight3,000–5,000LowVery High
Adventurous Noble2,000–4,000MediumHigh
Militia~300–800HighVery High (on a high roll)
Thief~200–500HighHigh (great tank base)
Brawler~250–600HighHigh

Even if your cheap recruits don’t end up perfect, many can still fill solid roles in your front line or support positions. But when they hit that triple star sweet spot? You’ve got yourself a legendary brother for pocket change.

God Bro Traits to Look For

When evaluating potential God Bros, aim for:

  • 3 stars in Melee Skill (essential for DPS builds)
  • 2–3 stars in Melee Defense (crucial for tanks)
  • Iron Lungs (especially for Nimble builds)
  • Bloodthirsty (great for morale-focused or execution builds)

You want combinations of high base stats + good traits + high star distribution. Don’t forget to check the actual rolls—stars are good, but without strong base numbers, they won’t carry the character far.

Final Thoughts

You’ve got two solid roads to building a powerful company:

  • Go for elite backgrounds and get guaranteed consistency—but at a high price.
  • Or gamble on the cheap and pray for high rolls—you’ll save money and might find a diamond in the rough.

Both methods can work beautifully. Some of your best fighters might be humble farmhands who just happened to roll like demigods. Others might be disappointing hedge knights who look the part but don’t deliver.

If you’re aiming for greatness on a budget, invest in lots of cheap recruits and keep rotating until you find Mr. Perfect.

Thanks for reading, and best of luck out there in the world of Battle Brothers!
