Welcome to another installment in the Battle Brothers Fight Guide series. Today we’re diving deep into how to approach large undead battles, focusing on enemies like zombies, necromancers, fallen heroes, and geists—not ancient undead. This guide will break down how these fights evolve over time, how to manage compositions, and what positioning and builds help most.

1. Understanding Undead Fight Progression

  • Early Game: Pure zombie fights are easy and trivial without geists or necromancers.
  • Mid Game: Once geists and necromancers are added, fights become more complex. Large numbers of undead can overwhelm unprepared teams.
  • Late Game: These battles are at their hardest. After that, in “late game plus,” they become trivial again—especially with legendary gear.

“The tactics stay the same, whether you’re using legendary or standard gear.”

2. Scouting with the Falcon

  • The falcon accessory is uniquely useful here.
  • It reveals the layout and enemy mix, which can dictate your setup:
    • No necromancer? No need for a dedicated necro-killer.
    • No geists? Swap your banner for a whip.
    • Tons of fallen heroes? Pack more disarms.
    • Just zombies? Drop tanks, bring duelists and two-handers for faster kills.

“Scouting lets you build your comp reactively. It’s worth the accessory slot.”

3. Positioning and Enemy Movement

Zombie & Fallen Hero AP Mechanics:

  • Zombies: 6 AP — can move 1 and attack, or move 3.
  • Fallen Heroes: 7 AP — can move 3 and climb a hill, making them harder to kite.

Know these limits to position safely.

Enemy Spawn Management:

  • Once there are 33+ enemies, they may spawn behind you.
  • Prepare with mobile hybrids or extra tanks to handle backline threats.

4. How to Handle Geists

  • Geists scream from 3 tiles away and act before zombies.
  • You must melee them—ranged is ineffective due to high defense.
  • Let them take forward positions before zombies fill in, so you can reach them.
  • Best tools:
    • Whips: 3-tile range, deals almost no damage (safe) — great for finishing off geists.
    • Banner: Can rally and remove fear.

“Whips are ideal—they one-shot geists without risking armor damage.”

5. The Necro-[Expletive] Build

  • A term coined for crossbow/polearm hybrids with Pathfinder.
  • Use them to flank around forests, snow, or swamp terrain and eliminate necromancers.
  • Works better than sending an archer due to higher mobility and durability.

“These hybrids walk wide, bypass the zombie guard, and snipe the necromancer safely.”

6. Mammoth Tanks and Formation

  • Zone control is critical when fighting 30+ zombies.
  • Mammoth tanks (high melee defense, Shieldwall + Indomitable) are placed far to the sides, not adjacent to terrain.
  • Zombies clump around them, allowing your core line to remain clean.

“Think of mammoths as bait—they anchor zombies so the rest of your line doesn’t get overrun.”

7. Decapitation Strategy

  • Zombies have a 33% chance to resurrect. Fallen Heroes even more.
  • Use Cleavers to Decapitate:
    • Decapitated zombies can’t rise again.
    • Fallen heroes can still resurrect headless, but it’s worth it.

Assign cleavers to decap high-risk corpses before the necromancer brings them back.

8. Dangerous Enemy Types

  • Two-handed flail Fallen Heroes: The most lethal enemy.
    • Ignores shield bonuses.
    • Can break tanks if not using Indomitable.
    • Be wary of possession boosts from necromancers (more attacks, higher damage, better accuracy).

“If a possessed flail hero hits your guy, it’s lights out unless he’s built to tank it.”

9. Battle Execution Tips

  • Disarm dangerous enemies with whips or high-initiative duelists.
  • Rotate + Taunt + Indomitable keeps control on chaotic fronts.
  • Use Polearms on frontliners to reach geists or pick off backliners.
  • Watch out for necromancer possession and resurrect chains. Hit the necro ASAP.
  • Possession ends if you damage the necromancer—use that to reset scary foes.

“Possession is brutal, but you can cancel it early with a hit—no need to finish him right away.”

10. Post-Fight Observations & Results

This particular fight featured:

  • Whips clearing geists quickly.
  • Mammoths anchoring fallen heroes safely.
  • Efficient decaps to prevent zombie revival.
  • Banner control and morale stabilization.
  • Hybrid necro-killer doing clean-up from the flanks.

The reward? A terrible legendary dagger with laughable bonuses—but a successful test of solid tactics nonetheless.

“Gear might be bad, but the tactics worked exactly as planned.”

Final Thoughts

Big undead fights in Battle Brothers require:

  • Proper identification of enemy types (scout with falcon).
  • Specialized builds (whips, necro hybrids, mammoths).
  • Positioning over power (bait, zone control, line integrity).
  • Precise execution with tools like Decapitate, Taunt, Indomitable, and Pathfinder.

With a solid plan and the right counter tools, these fights go from overwhelming to automatic.

Thanks for reading, and see you in the next fight guide. Peace!
