Welcome to Payday 3, the latest entry in the iconic co-op heist series. Whether you’re a returning veteran from the Payday 2 era or entirely new to the world of strategic heists and high-stakes shootouts, this guide covers everything you need to know to dive in confidently. From game versions and progression systems to weapons, skills, and heists — here’s your all-in-one survival guide for the criminal underworld.

Which Version Should You Buy?

Payday 3 is available in three editions:

  • Standard Edition ($40): Includes all current playable content.
  • Silver Edition ($70): Adds the Dark Sterling Mask and a 6-month Season Pass (includes tailor packs, weapon packs, and 2 heists).
  • Gold Edition ($90): Includes everything from Silver, plus the Skull of Liberty Mask, Golden State Gloves, and a 1-year Season Pass (adds 4 total heists).

All editions grant immediate access to the full core game, so you can start heisting from the moment of install.

Story Recap and Characters

Following the retirement of the Payday gang after Payday 2, an attempt on their lives drags them back into action — broke, betrayed, and hungry for revenge.

Returning characters: DallasWolfChainsHoxton, and Joy.

New face: Pearl joins the crew in Payday 3 as a fresh playable character.

Your mission? Complete elaborate heists to rebuild your fortune and track down those who crossed you.

Heists 101

The game launches with 8 heists, 7 of which can be completed fully in stealth. Each heist is unlocked from the start and can be tackled solo (with AI) or with a full squad of four players. Choose between public matchmaking, friends-only lobbies, or invites.

Each heist has four difficulty levels:

  • Normal
  • Hard
  • Very Hard
  • Overkill

Higher difficulties yield greater rewards. Some even rotate in weekly security modifiers for added challenge.

Phases of a Heist:

  1. Stealth – Case the joint and complete objectives quietly.
  2. Negotiation – Capture hostages and negotiate to delay law enforcement.
  3. Anticipation – A brief calm before police arrive.
  4. Assault – Cops swarm in waves while you complete the heist.
  5. No Return – Endless enemy spawns until escape or elimination.

Pro Tip: You can throw large loot bags to your AI teammates — they won’t pick them up on their own, but will carry them if you toss the bags directly.

Money Matters: Cash & C-Stacks

Two currencies power your Payday progress:

  • Cash – Earned from heists and used for weapons, mods, and most cosmetics.
  • C-Stacks – Premium unlock currency bought with cash, but here’s the twist: their price increases with each purchase and resets weekly. C-Stacks are used for endgame unlocks, like rare cosmetics or preset weapons.

Strategy Tip: Buy a few C-Stacks each week at the low cost to stockpile without breaking the bank.

Progression: XP & Infamy

  • XP: Earned per heist to level up the weapons and skills you use during that run.
  • Infamy: Your overall account level, gained through completing in-game challenges (found in the Challenges Tabunder Heists, Career, and Combat).
  • Career challenges often reward C-Stacks.
  • Heists and Combat challenges award Infamy XP, unlocking weapons, skills, cosmetics, and more.

Reach level 100 to unlock every gameplay feature. Levels 101–150 are for cosmetics and prestige.

Weapon Unlocks and Upgrades

As you level up your Infamy, more weapons become available for purchase. Use a weapon in heists to earn XP for it, which unlocks mods like:

  • Sights
  • Grips
  • Magazines
  • Barrel attachments

Preset Weapons: These are pre-modded versions that can’t be customized but still grant XP toward the base weapon. Use them to fast-track upgrades before building your personalized version.

Loadouts: Gear Breakdown

Each loadout includes:

  • Primary Weapon – Rifles, shotguns, marksman rifles, SMGs
  • Secondary Weapon – Pistols or revolvers
  • Overkill Weapon – Temporary, powerful weapon (called in after progress)
  • Armor Lining – Impacts durability and mobility
  • Deployable – Armor bag, medic bag, ammo bag, or sentry turret
  • Throwable – Grenade types or throwing knife
  • Tool Slot – Utility items

Team Strategy Tip: Coordinate roles. If your squad has plenty of medics, maybe bring ammo or armor support.

Skills and Buffs

Over 120 skills are spread across various trees. Here’s how it works:

  1. Research a base skill before a heist.
  2. Earn XP by completing the heist.
  3. Unlock that base skill, then assign skill points.
  4. Unlock and equip additional upgrades from the same skill line.
  5. Mastery Node becomes available when the full line is researched.

No need to unlock upgrades sequentially — just have the base skill active.

Ace Skills: Spend extra points on a base skill to activate its unique secondary effect.

Buff System:

  • Edge – +10% damage
  • Grit – -10% damage taken
  • Rush – +10% movement speed

Some skills grant buffs; others are enhanced while buffs are active. Mix and match for hybrid builds and tailored playstyles.

Customization: Fashion is the True Endgame

From flashy suits and gloves to elaborate masks and gun skins, Payday 3 offers deep customization.

Unlock cosmetic gear with cash or C-Stacks once your Infamy level allows access. Mix paint, stickers, charms, and outfit elements to make your heister truly your own.

Final Thoughts

Payday 3 is a fast-paced, endlessly replayable co-op game with deep systems hidden under its heist-heavy surface. Start simple — learn the phases, try a variety of gear, and get comfortable with the basics. Progress naturally at first, and when you hit Infamy 60–70, start targeting specific challenges.

Heist smart, coordinate with your crew, and don’t forget to throw those big bags.

Thanks for reading, and welcome to the crew.
