Welcome to Sea of Stars, and welcome to one of the most unexpectedly addictive features in the game—the Wheelsminigame. If you’ve dabbled in it already, you might’ve realized it’s deceptively simple on the surface, but it quickly ramps up in complexity. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to clear every champion with ease, this guide breaks down the method I used to win consistently—yes, even against the final bosses. Best of all? You can do this right from the beginning.
Start Simple: Mage + Knight Combo
You begin with the Mage and Knight, and for this strategy, that’s all you need. Place your Mage on the left, and your Knight on the right. Why does placement matter? Because of how the board functions: squares go to the left (Mage), and diamonds go to the right (Knight). From this point forward, your main objective is simple—focus exclusively on the Mage.
Ignore the Knight unless you’re absolutely forced into using him. And yes, that will happen occasionally, especially if the board hands you unavoidable diamond matches. But if you can, always prioritize feeding your Mage—single squares, double squares, squares with starry backgrounds (which level them up)—just keep that pipeline filled.
Why? Because once your Mage hits gold tier, the attacks become deadly. His double attack capability becomes a game-changer. The entire idea is to level up the Mage fast and lean into the aggressive damage pressure he delivers.
Luck Factor and Tactical Flexibility
Let’s be clear—this method doesn’t guarantee a flawless streak. There’s a degree of RNG in what tiles show up, and sometimes you’ll have to take what you’re given. A few matches may slip away from you. That said, following this strategy will still win you the vast majority of matches, including against all champions. Think of it as a flow—your Mage is your engine, and once it’s running, few opponents will keep pace.
You’ll occasionally be handed tempting double diamonds or triple matches for the Knight. If the board forces your hand, take the opportunity. It can end matches quickly or even give your Knight a surprise burst of usefulness. But don’t let those moments lure you into splitting your attention—it’s still a Mage-centric strategy.
Champions Are Beatdown Material With This Setup
This strategy carried me all the way through to the final Champion battles. Yes, even the Clockmaker. The reason? The Mage’s burst potential, especially when he hits gold and you’ve timed his activations right. Even if the opponent gets a hit or two in, the Mage can outpace their damage, and you’ll find yourself clinching victories with health to spare.
And speaking of the Clockmaker…
Advanced Play: The Rogue and Priest Combo
Once you’ve unlocked more characters, things open up in interesting ways. Enter: The Rogue and the Priest—a brutally efficient combo that I used to great effect in my second playthrough of the Clockmaker.
The Rogue (or Assassin, as it’s also referred to) dishes out high damage that ignores walls. The Priest, meanwhile, is your safety net—he heals, and more importantly, can activate the Rogue even if you never directly match for the Assassin. That synergy? Pure domination.
The key to this combo is prioritizing the Priest. The more you match and level him, the more often he heals and empowers the Rogue. And if you ever do end up getting the three-piece match for the Rogue himself, go ahead and take it—you’ll get a big payoff. But if forced to choose, Priest comes first.
This duo creates a rhythm: your Priest keeps your crown stable with constant healing, and every time he activates the Rogue, your opponent takes chip damage that adds up fast. Walls? They don’t matter anymore—the Rogue cuts right through them. Even if your opponent slows you down with status effects or disruption, the next Priest activation puts you right back on track.
Wrapping It Up: Wheels, Simplified and Conquered
So there you have it—two battle-tested ways to win at Wheels, starting from the early game and evolving into late-game mastery. Whether you prefer the beginner-friendly Mage-focused route or the powerful synergy of the Priest and Rogue, these strategies make the minigame a breeze.
Sure, a little luck is always part of the experience, but lean into your strengths, watch the board closely, and you’ll clear every opponent with confidence. Happy spinning, and may your Mage or Priest always go gold just in time.
