In Enshrouded, progression is tightly tied to upgrading your Flame Altar. To access areas covered in Level 3 deadly shroud—the ominous red mist zones—you’ll need to bring your altar to Level 3. The key to doing this is acquiring the Scavenger Matron Head, a boss drop that might seem intimidating at first. But don’t worry—we’ll break it down step-by-step for melee builds, ranged players, and even those under-geared. Plus, if you’re looking for legendary weapons to give you the upper hand, we’ve got you covered there, too.

Step 1: Reaching the Boss Location

Start at the Ancient Spire – Springlands fast travel point. From here, you’ll be gliding northeast past the Flame Temple Shrine toward a location called Hill of Scavengers—it’s marked on your map, sitting atop a mountainous region.

Once you reach the area, build a nearby Flame Altar to use as a respawn point in case of death. Then approach the left side of the scavenger fortress instead of using the main entrance. Loop around the north side of the hill to find a hidden mineshaft entrance. Enter here to begin your assault on the scavenger fortress from within.

Step 2: Prepping for the Fight (Gear & Buffs)

Before heading in, prepare the following:

  • Wolf Meat (+2 Constitution = more HP)
  • Berries (health regen)
  • Flask of the Flame (for stamina)
  • Elixir of Fury (+30% damage boost)
  • Metal Scrap Arrows (if you’re using ranged weapons)

For melee players, the Hail Scourge sword is a solid early-game weapon.

Step 3: Stealth Entry and Clearing the Path

Inside the mineshaft, use stealth to avoid unnecessary fights. Take out the patrolling archer quietly and loot enemies for metal scraps. These are great for crafting arrows and other essential gear.

Eventually, you’ll reach a locked door that requires a lockpick, craftable with scrap metal. Past this door is the boss chamber.

Step 4: Boss Mechanics – Scavenger Matron

The Scavenger Matron is a grotesque, corrupted figure who hurls poisonous Elixir vials and AoE attacks.

Key mechanics to watch for:

  • Headshots are ineffective. Aim for the belly for critical damage.
  • If she throws poison flasks and you’re far away, dodge roll to avoid them.
  • When close, circle-strafe her tightly—she has trouble hitting nearby targets.

For ranged characters:

  • Clear out archers before engaging.
  • Use scrap arrows and critical damage gear (like the Marksman armor set).
  • Maintain mid-range and attack between dodges.

Optional Cheese Strategy

There’s a clever trap method you can use. Near the boss arena is a trap hole. If you guide her over it and trigger explosive power balls, you can drop her into the hole where she becomes trapped.

From there:

  • Sit back.
  • Fire arrows into her vulnerable spots.
  • Use terrain to your advantage.

Be cautious—when she dies, she explodes, dealing AoE damage.

Loot Rewards

Once defeated, loot her to obtain:

  • Scavenger Matron Head (needed for Flame Altar upgrade)
  • Level 7 Epic Sword
  • Level 7 Hunter’s Bow

Bonus: Farming Legendary Weapons

If your gear isn’t strong enough yet, you can farm legendary weapons using this method:

  1. Clear the fort up to the golden chest upstairs.
  2. Loot the chest (contains random legendary gear).
  3. Press Escape > Return to Main Menu.
  4. Re-enter your private server.
  5. Repeat the process.

Some of the loot you can get includes legendary two-handed maces and rings.

Step 5: Upgrading Your Flame Altar to Level 3

With the Matron Head in your inventory, return to your Flame Altar and select Strengthen the Flame. You’ll need:

  • 10x Wax
  • 10x Salt
  • 5x Sparks (found at Flame Shrines)
  • Shroud Wood
  • Flintstone
  • Charcoal
  • Scavenger Matron Head

If you’re unsure where to find these resources, reference the community Wiki or built-in guides.

Once upgraded, your Flame Altar will allow you to survive Level 3 Deadly Shroud Zones, turning them from red to blue and opening up new areas to explore.

Next Steps: Level 4 Flame Altar

Your journey doesn’t end here. To upgrade to Level 4, you’ll need to defeat yet another boss located in the Revwood—far to the north.

Prepare accordingly, because the Shroud only gets thicker from here. Until then, gear up, explore, and master the art of the hunt.

Good luck, Flameborn.
