Fishing in Far Cry 6 isn’t just a relaxing side activity—it’s a surprisingly deep system tied into gear upgrades, crafting materials, and even stealth enhancements. This guide walks you through everything you need to know about fishing in Yara, including how to catch the hardest fish, which rod mods to use, and where to trade your catches for valuable rewards.

How to Get the Fishing Rod

You unlock the fishing rod during a mission on the first island. It becomes available in your weapon wheel once you complete a quest involving a fisherman. From there, you’re free to fish at any body of water marked on the map.

Upgrading Your Fishing Rod – Use the Tackle Box

To modify your fishing rod, you’ll need a Tackle Box, usually found near camps or fishing hubs. Unfortunately, these don’t show up on the map, so it’s worth memorizing a good one. A great option is in Costa Del Mar, next to a nearby camp and fishing spot.

The Fishing Rod Has Three Mod Slots:

  1. Lure Socket – Choose the right lure based on fish behavior:
    • Basic Lure – Default
    • Deep Water Lure – For fish that swim in deeper waters
    • High Reeling Speed Lure – Best for fish that are hard to reel in
    • Predator Lure – For predator-type fish (slower consumption bait)
    • Evasive Lure – For evasive fish
    • Fish Speed Lure – Reduces the fish’s speed (good for high-speed swimmers)

Check each fishing spot’s description to choose the right lure for the species found there.

  1. Reel Socket – Always go with the three-star version. It increases fish exhaustion/tiring speed and works for all types of fish.
  2. Fishing Line – Again, use the three-star version for max line strength. This helps prevent snapping while reeling in tougher fish.

You can also customize rod appearance using spray cans and attach charms the same way you do with guns.

Fishing Techniques: How to Catch the Hardest Fish

  • Casting: Press R2 to cast. Gently tap L2 to slowly reel the line in.
  • Hooking the Fish: Once a fish bites, press R2 again to hook it.
  • Reeling Mechanics: Hold L2 to reel in, but match the fish’s movement using the right analog stick in the opposite direction.

At the bottom of the screen, a directional prompt will show you where to pull the rod.

  • Line Tension: If the line turns red and the rod vibrates, release L2 to avoid snapping. Let the fish tire itself out, then resume reeling.
  • Strategy for Tough Fish: Reel – release – reel again. Repeat until the fish tires out.
  • Easier Fish: Can usually be reeled in all at once without releasing tension.

Fish Rewards and Trading

  • Each fish shows its trade value at Juan’s Arms Dealers.
  • Better fish (harder to catch) offer higher-value materials like industrial composite.
  • You can also sell fish for pesos, or keep them for building upgrades.

Fishing Hut & Upgrades

At the Foreman, you can build and upgrade a Fishing Hut in your guerrilla camps. Here’s what each upgrade offers:

  • Tier 1 Upgrade: Buy fishing spots for easy fish
  • Tier 2 Upgrade: Buy spots for harder fish
  • Tier 3 Upgrade: Unlock extreme-level fishing spots and elite rewards

You’ll also receive Fishing Gear and Abilities:

  • Fish Kill with Bullets (final upgrade)—lets you shoot fish without ruining meat

Tip: You can also unlock fishing spots by talking to NPCs on guerrilla roads.

Fishing Gear Set Overview

When you unlock all three Fishing Hut upgrades, you get a full fishing outfit:

  • Hat – Expands fish catch radius
  • Chest Gear – Prevents predators from attacking while fishing
  • Leg Gear – Increases fish meat yield per catch
  • Slippers (Foot Gear) – Improves swim speed
  • Gloves (Wrist Gear) – Increases reel speed

The gloves and hat offer the most practical advantage for core fishing efficiency.
