Starting out in Far Cry 4? Whether you’re new to Kyrat or looking to boost your early-game efficiency, these five beginner tips will help you level up faster, unlock critical gear upgrades, and get the most out of your first few hours. From hunting wild animals to capturing propaganda towers, let’s get you started on the right foot.

Tip 1: Find a Helicopter Early (Buzzer Location)

One of the most valuable tools early on is the Buzzer, a one-person mini-helicopter that lets you zip across the map with ease. Driving in Far Cry 4 can be clunky and slow, especially when terrain gets rugged or enemies attack — but flying skips all that.

  • Head to Khilana Bazaar, the first outpost you liberate early in the story. This location always spawns a Buzzer.
  • From the main building, exit and turn around toward the cliffs. You’ll find the Buzzer just below a rope climb.

Controls: Press X to ascend, Circle to descend, and whatever you do — don’t hold Square in midair, unless you want to swan dive to your doom.

Tip 2: Unlock Bell Towers to Reveal the Map

Far Cry 4’s world map is covered in fog until you liberate bell towers, which work like old-school radio towers from previous games. Capturing these not only clears the fog but reveals side quests, loot locations, and animal territories.

  • Use the Buzzer to fly straight to each bell tower — it’s much faster and safer than traveling by road.
  • Expect light resistance at the base: usually two or three enemies. Watch out for snipers.
  • Each tower is a mini puzzle with unique platforming mechanics. You may need to shoot locks, climb ropes, or scale the outside to reach the top.
  • Once at the top, interact with the broadcasting gear to hijack the signal and reveal the area.

Every liberated tower triggers a cutscene showing nearby locations. These are often packed with collectibles, gear, or hunting opportunities.

Tip 3: Go Hunting to Unlock Crafting Upgrades

Crafting is essential in Far Cry 4. You’ll need animal skins to upgrade your:

  • Wallet (carry more money)
  • Loot Bag (hold more items)
  • Weapon Holster (carry more guns)
  • Ammo BagExplosives BagSyringe KitBait BagQuiver, and more

Steps to get started:

  1. Use your newly unlocked map to locate animal icons.
  2. Hover over the icon to see which animal spawns there.
  3. Fly to the area using the Buzzer.

Hunting Tip: Use a bow to kill animals. This yields double skins, maximizing your efficiency.

Some animals, like wild boars, will flee or attack when approached. Be prepared — and aim for the head.

Don’t forget: arrows are recoverable! After a kill, loot the body and retrieve your used arrows. Once you have the skins, open your crafting menu and apply upgrades immediately.

Prioritize upgrades in this order:

  1. Loot Bag
  2. Wallet
  3. Weapon Holster
  4. Syringe Kit
  5. Ammo Bag

Tip 4: Upgrade Your Health Early

Fights in Kyrat can get brutal, especially when you’re undergeared. Upgrading your health bar ensures you can survive tougher enemy encounters and wild animal attacks.

  • You can unlock two early Health upgrades right away.
  • Additional health boosts unlock after completing the mission “A Key to the North.”

Make health a top priority — you’ll appreciate the cushion when ambushed by patrols or while tackling early outposts.

Tip 5: Gain XP Fast with Simple Exploration

Unlocking new skills in Far Cry 4 requires XP, and fortunately, there are many easy ways to earn it early on:

  1. Discover Locations: Every ? icon you uncover nets you 100 XP. Just walk into the area.
  2. Spin Mani Wheels: Found on the map as blue icons. Interact with these prayer wheels to gain XP and work toward rewards.
  3. Destroy Masks of Yalung: These creepy collectibles often require some puzzle solving. Some are hidden in caves or tough-to-reach areas. If you can’t pick one up, shoot it to destroy it.
  4. Remove Propaganda Posters: These flash when viewed up close. Tear them down by holding Square. If they’re out of reach, burn them off with a Molotov Cocktail.

Each of these collectible types contributes XP and sometimes unlocks gear, rewards, or upgrades.

Bonus Pro Tips

  • Pimp Your Bow: Get a sight attachment to make precision hunting easier. It’s perfect for skin farming.
  • Don’t Lose Your Buzzer: If you crash or leave it behind, return to Khilana Bazaar to grab a new one.
  • Scout Before Entering Towers: Identify propaganda posters outside bell towers before climbing. They’re easier to grab before going in.

With these five beginner tips, you’ll be well on your way to dominating Kyrat. From fast travel via helicopter to maxing out your gear with hunting, this approach turns the first few hours of Far Cry 4 into an efficient, XP-rich experience. Enjoy the wilds of Kyrat — and don’t forget to stock up on arrows!
