In one of the most intricate and atmospheric segments of Alan Wake 2, players must navigate the subway station as Alan, using a mixture of light-based mechanics and plot shifting. This section is less about combat and more about narrative progression through a maze of environmental storytelling and memory-triggered interactions. Below is a complete guide to help you progress through the subway tunnels, solve the environmental puzzles, and make use of the plot mechanic effectively.

1. The Subway Entrance – The First Echo

As you enter the subway station, your first step is to trigger the forgotten memory (echo) near the station entrance. Without doing this, all doors remain locked and no progress is possible.

  • Echo Memory 1: Listen to the ‘ghost of a fictional detective’ memory.
  • After doing so, a new story plot node appears.
  • Change the plot to unlock the path to your left.

2. Follow the Blood Trail

Once inside, you’ll encounter a blood trail. Follow it deeper into the tunnels to reach the first subway map — grab it for orientation.

  • The blood trail leads through a narrow path deeper into the tunnels.

3. Collapsed Tunnel & Plot Change

You’ll reach a collapsed tunnel that blocks your path.

  • Interact with the environment to change the plot again.
  • Plot OptionFederal Agent — this unlocks the next area.
  • Echo Memory 2: Triggers once the new plot is active. This reveals that the fed walked into a trap and adds “Murder Cult” as a new story thread.

4. Murder Cult Section

Move toward the new plot destination:

  • Activate the “Murder Cult” plot to gain access to the next blocked area.
  • Catch the nearby light source in your lamp to continue.
  • Echo Memory 3: Learn more about the cult’s rituals. This unlocks the Torch Bearers plot line.

5. Torch Bearers and the Train Blockade

  • Return to the train scene you passed earlier.
  • Switch the active plot to “Torch Bearers”.
  • The train car door opens, allowing you to pass through.
  • Continue through the creepy, shifting tunnels. The tone intensifies here.

6. Puzzle with Light and Lamp Management

You’ll encounter multiple segments where the path is blocked by darkness.

  • Use your lamp to store light from specific sources.
  • Cast the stored light to dissolve the darkness.
  • Timing and route planning are crucial — you may need to loop back for more light.

7. Echoing Hall & Dead Ends

You’ll reach a dead-end hall labeled “End of the Line.”

  • Try switching through all available plots:
    • Torch Bearers yields nothing here.
    • Murder Cult transforms the hall into the cult’s hideout, unlocking a new echo memory.
  • Echo Memory 4: Reveals a fed’s terrified escape and unlocks “Summoning Ritual” as the next plot node.

8. Summoning Ritual – Final Plot Sequence

Backtrack to the previous blocked area.

  • Change the story plot to “Summoning Ritual”.
  • This unlocks the final section of the subway and changes the visual tone to a haunting red glow.
  • Optional: Another echo memory appears, but you can now move on even if skipped.

9. Return to the Collapsed Tunnel – Escape

  • Circle back to the collapsed tunnel near the start.
  • Change the plot to Summoning Ritual to reveal the final exit path.
  • You’ll encounter a dark presence — run past it.

10. Return to the Surface

  • Navigate through a large underground chamber.
  • The subway station begins to shift and transform.
  • The scene transitions as Alan finds himself back in the apartment area, completing the subway chapter.

“I had found the murder site. Somehow, the victim’s heart was the key.”

Summary of Required Plot Progression:

  1. Forgotten Detective (Starter Plot)
  2. Federal Agent
  3. Murder Cult
  4. Torch Bearers
  5. Summoning Ritual

Each memory unlocks a plot, and each plot change reveals new paths. Without triggering the echo memories, progress is impossible.

Tips for Success:

  • Always interact with every memory echo you find.
  • If blocked, check if a new plot thread is available.
  • Manage your lamp carefully during light puzzles.
  • Don’t hesitate to backtrack — plot shifting requires revisiting areas.

With this structure and sequence, you’ll make it through one of Alan Wake 2’s most abstract and cerebral sequences — and come out with a deeper understanding of the story that’s slowly consuming the characters and the world around them.

Stay in the light, and let the story guide you.
