While Astral Chain starts off feeling fairly straightforward, especially once you get a grip on the core combat mechanics, the game’s depth really opens up in the late game and postgame content. If you’re just now getting into the tougher parts of the campaign or diving into the true endgame, there are several mechanics, optimizations, and hidden strategies that can completely change the way you play. These are the game-changing things I wish I knew earlier in my playthrough.
1. You Can Use Two Legions at Once—Seriously
This was a total revelation late in the game, discovered in desperation during the final boss fight. By using the skill Hit Rush, which allows your Legion to unchain and attack independently, you’re able to summon another Legion while the first one is still active.
It doesn’t last long—maybe 10 to 15 seconds—but during that time, your damage potential skyrockets. With both Legions active, you can create a crossfire of sync attacks, bind enemies from multiple directions, or spread out damage to deal with enemy mobs more efficiently.
If you really want to go overkill, you can rotate between Legions, each with Hit Rush ready, and chain them together for near-continuous dual Legion havoc. This tactic becomes especially critical during the punishing postgame challenges.
2. Sync Attack Timing and Combo Practice Are Worth Your Time
One thing that will set apart seasoned players from button-mashers is mastery of sync attacks. Each weapon—baton, gladius, and blaster—has different timings and cues for syncing with your Legion.
Use the training room to deeply understand your weapon/Legion combinations. Knowing precisely when a sync prompt appears during a combo can mean the difference between controlling the battlefield and flailing mid-fight. It’s one of the most technical—but rewarding—skills to develop.
3. Auto-Bind Is Broken (In the Best Way)
If there’s one skill you unlock early, make it Auto-Bind. It’s simply overpowered. This ability auto-chains enemies, locking them in place and even capturing multiple enemies at once.
It feels borderline unfair, but in a single-player action game, it’s just strategic advantage. Auto-Bind makes crowd control feel effortless and turns chaotic fights into manageable skirmishes. Prioritize unlocking it.
4. Dodge Smart—Don’t Mash
Dodging is a core survival mechanic, but spamming the dodge button is a trap. After every third consecutive dodge, your character will stagger, becoming vulnerable and immobile for a second.
The safer tactic is to dodge only twice, then briefly pause before dodging again. Unless absolutely necessary, avoid that third panic roll. Being left wide open in a late-game fight is a quick path to getting KO’d.
5. Out-of-Combat Mechanics That Matter More Than You Think
There are a few mechanics outside of battle that are either underexplained or completely skipped over by the game, but they’re incredibly useful once you know about them:
- Slide Under Objects with an Attack: Instead of awkwardly stopping and crouching to slide under things like garage doors, you can sprint and tap the attack button. You’ll do a forward strike that acts like a crouch in terms of hitbox interaction—faster, smoother, and more stylish.
- Jumping Hack with Legion Kick: While there’s no real jump button, you can simulate a jump using a trick: press backward then forward and attack to trigger a flying kick animation. Just as that ends, summon a Legion (preferably Aero, Beast, or Axe) to get a small lift that can help you skip certain terrain or shorten routes. It’s a creative workaround that can bypass long detours.
6. Legion Maintenance Is Actually Worth It
It’s tedious. Let’s get that out of the way. Cleaning your Legions at HQ after every mission is not glamorous—but it actually affects gameplay.
The more corruption (that purple goo) your Legion accumulates, the slower it moves and the less frequently it attacks. While the game never really explains this clearly, it makes a noticeable difference. A clean Legion attacks faster, moves more responsively, and feels more effective overall.
You don’t have to clean all five after every mission—just focus on the ones you use regularly.
7. Orders Are a Goldmine—Claim Your Rewards!
Many players forget to check their Order menu. It’s understandable when you’re focused on the action—but huge amounts of upgrade materials can pile up there without you noticing.
After each file, take a moment to check your Orders and claim everything. Many of them complete automatically during normal play, even when you’re not actively pursuing them. This free resource dump helps keep your weapons and Legatus upgrades on pace for higher difficulty levels.
Also, sell your Salvage items regularly—everything except for useful items like empty cans and cat food. Most of your junk has no other purpose than to pad your wallet.
8. Fastest Money Farming Method
Need cash fast? There’s an easy method. In File 3, behind the hologram wall where the secret Hermit shop is located, you’ll find a chest. On your first visit, it contains a rare material. But in every revisit afterward, it resets with a Leaking Battery, which sells for 10,000 each.
Here’s the grind:
- Grab the Leaking Battery.
- Sell it to the merchant sitting nearby.
- Quit the file and reload.
Repeat as needed. It’s a quick and effective farming loop.
9. Don’t Miss Out on Hidden Item Lights
Those glowing blue sparks scattered throughout levels? They’re free items, not just decoration. Use your Arrow Legionto shoot them down and claim the loot. Missing them means missing out on valuable consumables and materials—especially early game when resources are tighter.
10. Complete Side Content During the Story (Trust Me)
This last tip is a big one. If you’re the kind of player who blitzes the story first and returns for side quests later, Astral Chain might punish you for it. Once you reach the postgame, the difficulty spikes dramatically.
If you didn’t keep up with upgrades and side content, you’ll be under-leveled and unprepared. Worse yet, returning to old missions just for side quests gives you reduced rewards unless you finish the entire file.
In short: do side quests—blue and red cases—during your first run of a file. You’ll save time, maximize rewards, and avoid the grindy penalty of replaying long missions just for a missed case or two.
