Welcome to another essential GT6 guide, where we break down one of the most effective and often underestimated upgrades in the early game: the fully customizable transmission. In this walkthrough, we follow Poolshark Wizard’s demonstration using the Focus ST ’13 in the Novice Championship — specifically on the twisty Autumn Ring circuit — to show how drastically this single upgrade can enhance your racing performance.

Choosing the Right Car: Focus ST ’13

First stop: the Recommended Cars menu. This handy feature allows you to preview which cars suit which events — and among the early picks, the Ford Focus ST 2013 stands out. Why? For its price point (around 2,400 credits), it offers a healthy 252 horsepower, comes front-wheel-drive (FF), and features a turbo engine — a potent combo for early races. This layout grants dependable handling, and more importantly, leaves plenty of room for upgrades.

Why the Transmission Matters Most

Among the first upgrades Poolshark suggests, the transmission comes out on top — even more important than turbocharging or weight reduction at this early stage. Why? Because while many tracks in GT6 lack long straights to hit top speed, acceleration is what truly wins races. A fully customizable transmission lets you fine-tune your car’s gearing, adapting performance to each track’s layout.

The upgrade costs a steep 18,000 credits — almost the same as the car itself — but the benefits speak for themselves. Using the B tuning tab, players can adjust the car’s top speed manually. For example, reducing the top speed slider from the default 162 mph down to 124 mph increases the acceleration output significantly, making the car much quicker out of corners.

Baseline Test: Stock vs. Tuned

To demonstrate this, two laps of Autumn Ring — a technical track with lots of curves and few long straights — are used as a benchmark.

  • Stock Configuration (Tab A): Using the unmodified Focus ST, the car struggled with responsiveness out of corners and only achieved a best lap of 3:29.6, winning by a margin of 0.72 seconds. Top speed peaked at around 110 mph on the longest straight.
  • Upgraded Transmission (Tab B): With the top speed adjusted down to 124 mph, acceleration drastically improved. The Focus ST was faster off the line, more responsive out of tight corners, and overtook rivals with far more ease. The lap time dropped to 3:20.2, shaving over 9 seconds, and the final lead extended to a massive 5.13 seconds.

This is a powerful showcase of how the right gearing can change the whole race, especially on shorter or twist-heavy circuits.

When and How to Use Transmission Tuning

  • For short technical circuits like Autumn Ring, reduce your top speed to boost acceleration. You’ll rarely touch high speeds anyway, so shift that power lower in the rev range.
  • On long, high-speed tracks like Route X, raise the top speed so you don’t bounce off the rev limiter.
  • Use the track’s longest straight length as a guide. Autumn Ring’s longest straight is 0.26 miles, meaning a top speed of around 124 mph was plenty.

Adjusting for each track means you can tune the same car for wildly different circuits — maximizing your return on investment from a single upgrade.

Other Upgrade Options

While this video focused purely on transmission, it’s worth noting that the Focus ST also supports:

  • Turbo upgrades (to increase power)
  • Weight reduction kits
  • Suspension tuning

However, the takeaway is clear: transmission tuning alone can deliver game-changing results.

Conclusion: The Smart Racer’s Edge

Gran Turismo 6 rewards drivers who understand their machines — not just behind the wheel, but in the garage too. Fully customizable transmissions give you total control over your car’s acceleration profile, making a huge difference, even without other upgrades. And as Poolshark Wizard demonstrated, adjusting for the track’s characteristics can shave seconds off your time and turn a narrow win into a dominant performance.

So before you bolt on that turbo or dump credits into cosmetics — tune your gears, fine-tune your strategy, and win smarter.
