Welcome, Riders! The Rite of Channeling is one of the most powerful and flexible systems in Monster Hunter Stories 2, allowing you to customize your Monsties by transferring and combining genes. These genes provide active combat abilities or passive stat boosts, and when arranged properly on a Monstie’s 3×3 grid, they can unlock Bingo Bonuses that dramatically increase damage output.

In this guide, we’ll walk through three specific monster builds and the thinking behind them—showcasing offensive power, flexibility, and hybridization strategies. Whether you’re looking to build a specialized elemental attacker or a tactical all-rounder, this guide gives you a solid foundation.

Build 1: Specialized Fire Power – Anjanath Build

Let’s begin with a focused elemental attacker. This Anjanath is built around Fire damage and Power-type attacks. Before assigning genes, note your Monstie’s base element and attack type—for Anjanath, that’s Fire (red genes) and Power (arms-up icon).

The goal here is to line up genes with the same:

  • Color (element: Fire)
  • Type icon (attack: Power)

Aligning three of either on the 3×3 grid activates a Bingo Bonus:

  • +150% Fire damage
  • +150% Power attack damage

Most of the genes assigned deal Blaze or Blast Blight status effects, making them perfect companions for weapons like the Blast Fire Chaser Hammer, which gets a damage boost against monsters suffering from Burn or Blast Blight.

This Anjanath isn’t fully maxed yet, but duplicates of the same gene can be fed back into it to star-up those genes, boosting their strength. (Two stars is the observed maximum.) This build is a great example of specialization with synergy across gear and Monstie abilities.

Build 2: Versatile Speed-Focused Generalist – Tigrex Build

Tigrex serves as the complete opposite—designed to be flexible. It deals non-elemental damage (gray genes) and is a Speed-type attacker (fleeing figure icon).

By filling the gene grid with:

  • Gray-colored genes (non-elemental attack)
  • One Power, one Speed, and one Technical gene

This Tigrex gains:

  • +150% non-elemental attack boost
  • The ability to manually choose any attack type during combat (provided you have enough kinship gauge)

This means it can always counter enemy attack types or pair with your character to pull off Double Attacks, regardless of matchup. Though it sacrifices the max damage output of a specialized Monstie, it’s invaluable for sustained encounters and tactical advantage.

Build 3: Hybrid Thunder Technician – Red Kezu Build

Red Kezu blends specialization with versatility. It is a Thunder-element Monstie with a Technical attack type (spiked icon).

This build uses mostly:

  • Yellow genes to boost Thunder damage
  • Technical-type abilities to match the base attack type
  • One Speed and one Power-type gene for coverage

This approach allows the Red Kezu to consistently deal high Thunder damage while retaining the ability to switch attack types on the fly—ideal for countering enemies or enabling Double Attacks.

It’s a great middle ground between the Anjanath and Tigrex strategies, making it an excellent choice for players who want focused damage but also want the flexibility to respond to evolving combat situations.

Gene Strategy Summary

  • Always match gene colors with your Monstie’s base element for elemental Bingo bonuses.
  • Match gene icons to your Monstie’s attack type (Power, Speed, or Technical) for type Bingo bonuses.
  • triple match (color, type, and skill synergy) yields a massive damage output.
  • Use rainbow genes as wildcards to complete Bingo patterns, but note: they do not provide additional abilities and are generally less valuable in late-game optimized builds.

Quick Leveling & Gene Extraction Tips

To speed up Monstie leveling (to unlock more genes for extraction or upgrades):

  • Add the Monstie to your main party and complete board quests.
  • Use Quick Finish in low-level zones to instantly end battles.
  • Assign Monsties to XP-focused expeditions for passive leveling.

These methods quickly get your bench team up to speed so you can harvest their genes and feed them into your top-tier monsters.

Final Thoughts

The Rite of Channeling and gene grid system offer some of the deepest customization in Monster Hunter Stories 2. Whether you specialize in devastating elemental builds, create flexible tactical monsters, or blend both, understanding Bingo synergy and choosing your gene types intentionally is the key to building unstoppable Monsties.

Experiment, adjust to your preferred weapon, and don’t be afraid to sacrifice a few Monsties along the way. Their genes will live on—stronger than ever.

Happy riding, and may your next gene roll be a perfect fit!
