While Bayonetta 2 is best known for its high-octane action, daring combos, and outlandish style, there’s a quieter but crucial element to survival: maximizing your health. Collecting Broken Witch Hearts is how you permanently increase Bayonetta’s life bar, and there are a whopping 40 to find throughout the main game — not including the extra five that can be purchased at the Gates of Hell.

Here’s a full chapter-by-chapter breakdown to help you collect every single one.

Chapter 1 – 10 Broken Witch Hearts

This chapter has the most Witch Hearts — but two require returning later with the water snake transformation.

  1. At the docks, jump into the water and swim right. Use water snake form to reach a hidden gap and find a chest.
  2. Far left of the main square is a Muspelheim Gate. Complete it to earn the Heart.
  3. After exiting the Gate, drop into nearby water and open a chest.
  4. After Verse 2 in the underwater arena, go right to a broken path and find another chest.
  5. From the same arena, swim through an arch on the left using water snake form. Chest at the end.
  6. After meeting Loki, go left to an Umbran Resting Place. Collect all pieces in time.
  7. Backtrack into the water and head under the left arch to a Muspelheim Gate.
  8. Inside the cathedral, on the right upper level is another Muspelheim Gate.
  9. Near the recipe guide, explore the room on the left for another Umbran Resting Place.
  10. Before the boss fight, drop into water near the small bridge and defeat an angel to claim the Heart.
