Welcome to the complete Terraria 1.4 Mage progression guide. Whether you’re just starting out or aiming to reach the Moon Lord with magical flair, this guide offers a streamlined path to mastering the arcane arts.

Getting Started

Begin your journey as with any Terraria run: chop trees, build houses, and explore. For a smoother experience, playing in a Corruption world is recommended, as the Vilethorn is a powerful and beginner-friendly magic weapon.

Early Magic Weapons:

  • Wand of Sparking: Found in surface chests; weak but serviceable.
  • Gem Staffs: Craft with 10 gems and a stick at an anvil. Diamond, Ruby, and Amber are the strongest.

Accessories and Mana:

  • Gather Fallen Stars to increase max mana.
  • Use bombs from the Demolitionist to reach Corruption/Crimson orbs.

Essential Early Gear

  • Vilethorn (Corruption) or Crimson Rod (Crimson)
  • Jungle Armor: Jungle spores, stingers, and vines from the Underground Jungle.
  • Meteor Armor + Space Gun: Mine Meteorite after defeating a boss. The armor makes Space Gun cost 0 mana.
  • Mana Flower: Combine a Nature’s Gift (found in Jungle) and a Mana Potion at a Tinkerer’s Workshop.

Pre-Hardmode Bosses

  • Eye of Cthulhu: Wait until you have the Meteor set. Use Space Gun or Vilethorn.
  • Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu: Use Vilethorn, Water Bolt, or Zapinator if available.
  • Skeletron: Water Bolt from the Dungeon helps. Explore for Cobalt Shield.
  • Queen Bee: Optional; B-Gun is a viable option.
  • Wall of Flesh: Use Space Gun, Bee Gun, Zapinator, or Water Bolt. Build a long bridge and buff up with potions.

Early Hardmode

  1. Spider Biome Farming:
    • Poison Staff: Rare drop from Black Recluses.
    • Spider Staff: Solid summon backup.
  2. Craft Crystal Serpent (fishing in Hallow) or Sky Fracture:
    • Sky Fracture: Magic Missile + Light Shards + Souls of Light.
  3. Armor: Any ore set is fine; upgrade soon.
  4. Wings: Ice Feather (Ice Golem) + Souls of Flight = Frozen Wings.

Mechanical Bosses

  • Golden Shower: Debuffs enemies. Made with Ichor and a Spell Tome.
  • Twins: Use Golden Shower, Crystal Serpent, or Sky Fracture.
  • Destroyer: Magical Harp (crafted from Souls of Sight and Crystal Shards) is highly effective.
  • Skeletron Prime: Similar tactics to Twins.

Post-Mech Gear:

  • Venom Staff: Upgrade of Poison Staff.
  • Life Fruit: Increase HP to 500.

Plantera and Beyond

  • Spectre Armor: Made with Chlorophyte and Ectoplasm. Two helmets: Mask (damage), Hood (healing).
  • Accessories:
    • Master Ninja Gear: Combine Climbing Claws, Shoe Spikes, Black Belt, Tabi.
