Scientists are a persistent threat in Rust. Whether you’re looting roads, pushing monuments, or tackling events, these AI enemies can quickly become the difference between victory and a respawn screen. In this guide, we’ll break down every tier of scientist—from the weak road roamer to the heavily armed Oil Rig elite—covering their health, behavior, weapons, and loot.
Scientist Tiers Overview
There are six types of scientists in Rust:
- Roamer
- Dweller
- Common
- Military
- NVG
- Heavy
These tiers are mostly defined by their health and loot tables. While most drop loot scaled to their toughness, NVG and Heavy scientists have distinct, unique loot tables that stand out from the others.
General Scientist Attributes
Despite their tier differences, all scientists share some key traits:
- Day/Night Vision: They see equally well in all lighting.
- Flashbangs: All can be blinded by flashbangs. NVG scientists are especially vulnerable, stunned for 5 seconds compared to the average 3 seconds for others.
- Sound Detection: If you’re in agro range, loud noises can draw their attention—even if you’re not in their line of sight.
- Harvestable: Every scientist can be harvested for 5 cloth and 30 bones with a hatchet.
- Aggro Mechanics: Scientists operate in preset patrol loops. Once aggroed, they’ll chase and attack. Up close, they will often sprint toward you—even through doors and around cover.
Agro distance ranges vary by tier and gear, falling into four general ranges: 15m, 30m, 40m, and 60m. Shooting distance also varies but isn’t affected by damage drop-off like with players—their bullets do full damage regardless of range, though accuracy drops off significantly over distance.
Tier 1: Roaming Scientists
- Location: Roadsides
- Health: 115 HP
- Weapons: M92 Pistol
These are the lowest-tier scientists, typically found wandering roads. They’re slow to respond, have minimal gear, and are a solid early scrap source.
Loot Table Highlights (2 items per kill):
- Basic meds
- Low scrap quantities
- Ammo
- Low-tier components
Tier 2: Dweller Scientists
- Subtypes: Tunnel Dwellers and Underwater Dwellers
- Health: 125 HP
- Weapons:
- Tunnels: M92 or M39
- Underwater: M92 or MP5
These dwellers pack more punch. Tunnel dwellers with the M39 are notably accurate and dangerous.
Loot Table Highlights (3 items):
- Medkits
- Medium components
- Bullets
- Gears or springs
Tier 3: Common Scientists
- Location: Arctic, Cargo, Excavator, Military Base, Oil Rig, Silo, Airfield, Trainyard, Launch Site
- Health: 150 HP
- Weapons: MP5 or LR-300
This tier ramps up both accuracy and firepower. They are more coordinated and tougher to dispatch, but the loot is also better.
Loot Table Highlights (3 items):
- Mid-tier meds
- Rare components
- Intermediate gear
- SMG bodies
Tier 4: Military Scientists
- Location: Military Tunnels
- Health: 175 HP
- Weapons: LR-300 or SPAS-12
This tier introduces real danger, especially in close quarters. The SPAS-wielding variants are devastating at short range.
Loot Table Highlights (3 items):
- Higher scrap value
- Medical syringes
- SMG/AR parts
- Weapon bodies
Tier 5: NVG Scientists
- Location: Military Silo
- Health: 300 HP
- Weapons: LR-300 or SPAS-12
These are new additions to Rust and deserve their own tier. Though they share health with Heavies, their loot table is distinct. NVG scientists are more susceptible to flashbangs—use that to your advantage.
Loot Table Highlights (3 items):
- Tech trash
- Rifle bodies
- Rare scrap components
- Military-grade meds
Tier 6: Heavy Scientists
- Location: Oil Rig (triggered by Locked Crate)
- Health: 300 HP
- Weapons: M249 or SPAS-12
The most dangerous of all, these scientists appear in groups:
- 6 on Small Oil Rig
- 10 on Large Oil Rig
Heavies with the M249 pose a massive threat due to continuous fire without reload interruptions. Their behavior and threat level are unmatched.
Loot Table Highlights (up to 8 items):
- High-tier components
- Rare weapons
- C4 or explosives
- Military-grade gear and meds
Weapon Damage Comparison
While scientist damage output is tied to their weapon—not their tier—the threat each one poses also depends on how close you are and their weapon type:
- SPAS-12: Deadly up close, especially with Heavies and Military.
- M249: Massive sustained fire potential.
- M92/M39: Low-mid damage but still lethal over time.
Also, unlike player shots, scientist bullets do not lose damage over range, though they do lose accuracy. So long-range engagements are usually safer.
Tactical Tips for Fighting Scientists
- Use distance to your advantage; most scientist weapons are stronger up close.
- Use flashbangs, especially against NVG and Common scientists.
- Cover is crucial—bait them around corners or into peekable hallways.
- Don’t underestimate tunnel dwellers—M39 accuracy can ruin your day.
- Loot smart: kill, clear, then loot. Rushing in can expose you to more aggro.
From passive road roamers to elite Oil Rig defenders, understanding scientist behavior, weaponry, and weaknesses can mean the difference between farming safely and wasting another kit. Now that you know what you’re up against, you can plan your raids, monument runs, and loot trips with more confidence and efficiency.
