Garry’s Mod in VR? It’s not just a concept—it’s fully playable, surprisingly stable, and it even includes all the core GMod features like noclip, god mode, spawn menus, and settings control. Whether you’re walking around GM_Construct in awe or blasting NPCs with full motion controls, this guide will walk you through installing VR support for Garry’s Mod using the current method (updated for 2024).

What You Need Before You Begin

  • A VR headset (e.g., Oculus Quest with Link, Valve Index, or other PC-compatible headset).
  • Garry’s Mod installed and functioning properly via Steam.
  • Basic familiarity with the Steam Workshop and GitHub.

Step 1: Disable Cinema Mode for GMod

  1. In Steam Library, right-click on Garry’s Mod.
  2. Select Properties > General.
  3. Uncheck ‘Use Desktop Game Theatre while SteamVR is active’ (also known as Cinema Mode).

This prevents Steam from forcing a 2D theater mode and allows proper 6DoF VR interaction.

Step 2: Subscribe to the VR Mod (Experimental)

  1. Open the Steam Workshop for Garry’s Mod.
  2. Search for:

VR Mod Experimental – Virtual Reality

  1. Click the first result and hit Subscribe.

This installs the Workshop version of the VR mod, but there’s still one more step to fully activate it.

Step 3: Download the VR Mod Installer from GitHub

  1. Scroll down on the mod’s Workshop page and click the link to the GitHub page.
  2. You’ll be redirected outside of Steam—this is normal.
  3. On GitHub, locate the latest version and download the VR Mod Installer (EXE).
  4. Run the installer.
    • Choose Option 1 to install.
    • When prompted, type Y to confirm and complete installation.

This sets up the backend files needed for the mod to communicate properly with VR runtimes.

Step 4: Connect Your VR Headset

  • Make sure your headset is powered on and connected to your PC (via Oculus Link, SteamVR, or similar).
  • Ensure SteamVR is running and detects your headset.

Step 5: Enable the VR Mod in GMod

  1. Launch Garry’s Mod.
  2. Go to the Add-ons menu.
  3. Make sure the VR Mod Experimental is enabled.
  4. Start a singleplayer game (e.g., gm_construct).

Step 6: Activate the VR Mod In-Game

  1. Once in the game, press the tilde (~) key to open the console.
  2. Type:

vrmod

  1. This opens the VR mod interface.

From here:

  • Adjust settings (height calibration, seated vs standing mode, etc).
  • Choose preferences for movement, hand style, and camera control.
  • When ready, click Start to inject the game into your headset.

Step 7: Enjoy GMod in Full VR

Once injected, the world of Garry’s Mod becomes fully immersive:

  • Use your controllers to interact with objects.
  • Access full spawn menus and tools.
  • Switch between seated and standing modes.
  • Take full control of your surroundings using motion tracking.

The mod feels fluid and reactive—even with additional add-ons installed. Whether you’re experimenting with NPCs or just exploring your favorite maps in first person, the novelty and interactivity of VR GMod is a game-changer.

Final Thoughts

This may be one of the oldest games in your Steam library, but with VR support, Garry’s Mod feels entirely new again. Seeing GM_Construct up close and personal in 3D is surreal if you’ve been playing since the early days.

Recommended:

  • Use seated mode if you’re not standing.
  • Use the console command vrmod anytime you need to reopen the mod menu.
