The Naturalist role in Red Dead Online offers some of the most unique and rewarding gameplay, but let’s be honest—most players are in it for two things: Legendary Animal Missions and the Wilderness Campfire, both unlocked at Naturalist Level 5. Reaching that level fast can save you hours of wandering aimlessly or wasting resources. This guide breaks down the three most effective leveling methods, tested and compared so you can choose the best path to becoming a seasoned Naturalist in no time.
Method 1: Sheep and Farm Animal Sampling at Emerald Ranch
This is arguably the simplest and most beginner-friendly method to level up fast.
How It Works:
- Purchase Sedative Ammo from Harriet (the best spot is at Lagras, near fast travel).
- Head to Emerald Ranch and locate the sheep (usually 9–10 of them).
- Use sedative ammo, take samples, and move on to cows and goats nearby.
- Return to Harriet, sell the samples, and restock ammo.
Important Note: You only earn Naturalist XP when you sell samples, not when sedating or collecting them.
Sometimes the animals won’t spawn. This is often due to nearby players affecting the world state. You can fix this by entering the nearby barn, staying a few seconds, and then leaving. The animals typically spawn when you exit—unless another player is nearby watching the area.
Each full run takes about 6 minutes, and earns around 35,000 XP/hour. That’s more than enough to reach Level 5 in a little over 2 hours (8,000 XP required).
Boost Your Efficiency:
- Use Blending Tonics to complete daily challenges for extra XP and gold.
- Purchase Animal Revivers and use them after sampling to gain 10 bonus XP per revive. This increases hourly XP to 39,000.
Method 2: Alligator Sampling near Lagras
More intense but more efficient, this method capitalizes on the abundance of alligators in Lemoyne.
How To Do It:
- Start in Lagras and look for alligators nearby.
- Sedate up to 10, then return to Harriet to sell.
Unlike the farm method, this one requires a clean weapon to ensure quick sedation before the gator escapes into the water. Use your lasso immediately after the sedation marker turns red—don’t wait for them to fall asleep. This prevents them from escaping into the swamp.
Keep in mind:
- You can’t sedate swimming alligators.
- Clean your rifle between runs.
- Avoid using the Hangman ability card, as it may interfere.
Reviving sedated alligators adds XP, but be cautious—they sometimes become aggressive post-revival.
On average:
- Without revives: ~38,500 XP/hour
- With revives: ~42,000 XP/hour
It’s more repetitive than farm runs, but alligators are reliable—they don’t despawn, even with nearby players.
Method 3: Selling Full Collections from the Animal Field Guide
This is the fastest and most rewarding method—but it takes a bit more planning and movement.
Here’s How It Works:
- Open Progress > Roles > Naturalist > Animal Field Guide.
- Focus on one habitat collection (e.g. Mountain & Grassland).
- Collect samples for all animals in the category.
- Sell one sample from each animal to Harriet to earn stamps.
- Once the page is complete, trade in the collection for 1,000 XP + cash.
A good collection to target is the Mountain & Grassland Habitat:
- Contains 14 animals
- Located in central areas: around Valentine, Strawberry, and Manzanita Post
- Most animals are easy to find—except Timber Wolves
Finding Timber Wolves:
These spawn mostly at night (9 PM–6 AM). Best locations:
- North of Valentine (common ambush point)
- Near Fort Wallace (frequent spawns)
- Roads north of Heartland Oil Fields
- Around O’Creagh’s Run
Use the interactive Red Dead map if needed. Once you’ve collected enough samples:
- Sell one of each sample to Harriet
- Then trade in the collection via the Field Guide
- Repeat
You earn:
- 700 XP for selling the samples
- 1,000 XP for trading the full set
Average XP rate: 48,000 XP/hour, making it the most efficient leveling strategy overall.
Final Advice: Going Beyond Level 5
If your only goal is unlocking Legendary Animal Missions and the Wilderness Campfire, then reaching Level 5 is more than enough. But if you want to fully max out the Naturalist role, combine the strategies:
- Hold 10 samples of each animal in your target collection
- Trade in 10 full collections back-to-back for massive XP bursts
And if you’re also working on the Trader Role, these animal materials can feed directly into Cripps’ supply needs, making both roles work hand-in-hand.
Stay sharp, stay stealthy, and sample smart. The Naturalist life may not be as flashy as bounty hunting or moonshining, but with these tips, you’ll level up faster than a Timber Wolf ambush at midnight.
Good luck out there.
