Welcome back, builders! In this follow-up to Victor’s engine build tutorial, we’re shifting gears — literally — and focusing on the next critical phase of your Satsuma: installing the suspension, wheels, and steering system. This phase includes front and rear suspension setups, brake systems, clutch hydraulics, and of course, mounting and aligning the wheels. It’s a lot, but don’t worry — we’re walking through it step by step.
Before you start, make sure you have:
- 3 bottles of brake fluid (from Teimo’s store)
- All 4 wheels (retrieved separately)
Let’s dive in.
1. Front Suspension and Steering Setup
Subframe
- Install the subframe to the engine bay bottom.
- Secure with 4 x 10mm bolts (one in each corner).
Wishbones
- Attach left and right wishbones to the subframe.
- Each uses 2 x 10mm bolts.
- Left goes on the left, right on the right — double-check or it won’t fit.
Steering Rack and Column
- Mount the steering rack to the back of the subframe.
- Secure with 4 x 9mm bolts.
- Attach the steering column to the rack with 2 x 8mm bolts.
Steering Wheel
- Place the steering wheel on top of the column.
- Secure with 1 x 10mm bolt.
Front Spindles
- Clip left and right spindles onto the wishbones.
- Secure each with 1 x 12mm bolt under the circular holes.
Steering Rods
- Attach steering rods to either side of the steering rack.
- Each uses 1 x 12mm bolt.
Disc Brakes (Front)
- Install disc brakes onto the front hubs.
- Don’t bolt the 14mm bolts yet — wait until wheels are attached.
Half Shafts
- Clip half shafts just behind the disc brakes.
Front Struts
- Install left and right front struts above the half shafts.
- Secure at the base with 4 x 9mm bolts (located behind the wheel area).
- Tighten 3 x 9mm bolts on each end of the half shafts (where they connect to the engine — can be done early).
- Secure top of each strut to the car body with 3 x 10mm bolts.
2. Rear Suspension Assembly
Trail Arms
- Attach left and right trail arms to the car’s rear.
- Each uses 2 x 12mm bolts.
Drum Brakes (Rear)
- Clip drum brakes to the half shafts.
- Leave the 14mm bolt in the center loose until the wheels are attached.
Coil Springs and Shock Absorbers
- Slot coil springs onto the black knobs protruding from the half shafts.
- Add shock absorbers:
- Bottom: 2 x 6mm bolts
- Top: 1 x 12mm bolt
- You can secure the top bolts easily by looking from the rear of the car.
3. Brake and Clutch Systems
Brake Master Cylinder
- Install on the back right of the engine bay.
- Secure with 2 x 8mm bolts.
Brake Line
- Attach brake line to rear engine bay.
- Tighten 7mm bolts:
- 1 near steering column
- 1 at each front wheel
- 1 at each rear wheel
- 4 on the main brake line section
- 2 on the master cylinder
Clutch Master Cylinder
- Mount next to brake master cylinder.
- Uses 2 x 8mm bolts.
Clutch Line
- Route the clutch line above the brake line.
- Secure with 2 x 7mm bolts:
- 1 on the clutch master cylinder
- 1 on the engine (can be done early, no impact)
Final Brake/Clutch Connections
- Under the steering wheel, tighten 2 x 9mm bolts to link brake and clutch systems to the pedal assembly.
4. Pour Brake Fluid
- Open all three caps with the scroll wheel.
- Fill each reservoir with brake fluid from the yellow bottles you purchased.
5. Wheel Installation and Alignment
Mounting Wheels
- Mount all four wheels to their hubs.
- Secure with:
- 1 x 14mm bolt in the center
- 4 x 13mm bolts per wheel
Steering Alignment
- Find the 14mm bolt on each steering rod.
- Scroll until the wheels stop moving.
- Then scroll in the opposite direction 60 clicks.
- Repeat on both sides for proper alignment.
Done and Ready!
You’ve now got a fully installed and functional suspension and steering system on your Satsuma. From this point, you can continue your build with confidence. If you’re interested in upgrading to racing suspension, stay tuned — that tutorial’s coming next.
Until then, happy wrenching. Catch you in the next build!
