The Riftbreaker is a genre-blending experience that throws together RTS base-building, tower defense, and action-packed hack-and-slash combat. With its blend of Starcraft’s tactical base management and Diablo’s fast-paced chaos, it’s a game that can overwhelm and thrill in equal measure. Whether you’re just stepping out of the rift onto this wild new planet or you’re knee-deep in biomass and alien aggression, these tips will give you a strong foundation to thrive and survive.
1. Choose Your Base Location Wisely As soon as you land, your first major decision is where to establish your base. Your initial priority is proximity to two vital resources: Carbonium (gray with blue tints) and Ironium (orange). However, there’s more to this decision than resources. Pay attention to the environment—large rocky areas act as natural, indestructible walls. These formations can serve as defensive barriers, allowing you to conserve materials by needing fewer walls in your defensive setup.
2. Clear the Land and Harvest While You Do It Dense flora might look like a hindrance, but your mech’s sword can turn it into an advantage. Clearing trees and plants not only improves visibility and build space but also yields plant biomass—an essential early-game resource. Watch for glowing green leaves, which indicate drops. Be cautious though, as some plant types explode on contact. Take those out from a distance to stay safe.
3. Mining and Building Simultaneously The game allows you to mine deposits like Carbonium by holding spacebar. What it doesn’t tell you is that you can build while mining. Use this to your advantage by laying down essential structures like power generators and extractors without pausing your resource gathering—saving precious seconds, especially on higher difficulties.
4. Streamline Your Building with Click and Drag Placing buildings one at a time is inefficient. You can click and drag to build rows of walls, solar panels, or wind turbines in one go. This is a huge time-saver and helps with consistent spacing and defense.
5. Master Early Power Management with Biomass Generators While the game nudges you toward wind and solar energy, don’t overlook the Biomass Generator. Once unlocked with minor research and some Ironium, it provides a solid 100 energy per second in exchange for plant biomass. This is a game-changer early on, conserving Carbonium and space while giving you the power to expand or operate energy-intensive buildings.
6. Prepare for Power Fluctuations Energy supply isn’t stable. Solar panels go dormant at night or during rain, while wind turbines fluctuate with the weather. Invest in energy storage early—aim for at least one storage unit per generation building. You’ll be thankful during combat when your weapons and defenses draw heavily from your reserves.
7. Fortify and Compartmentalize Your Base Don’t rely on a single perimeter. Double up on walls and install gates smartly—when placing, make sure the gate opens outward to allow back-to-back gate placement. As your base expands, compartmentalize sections. This ensures that if one wall breaks, the whole base doesn’t fall. Separate critical areas like power plants and resource storage to create internal fallback lines.
8. Remote Outposts Should Be Self-Sufficient As you venture further to claim distant resources, don’t tether everything to your main base. Outposts can function autonomously with local power and mining. There’s no need for direct connection, and the turret limit is global rather than regional—freeing you to fortify each outpost independently.
9. Use Rift Portals for Mobility Fast travel is a necessity as the map expands. Rift Portals let you jump around instantly. They function much like Diablo-style town portals and are crucial for responding to attacks on remote outposts. Use Tab to bring up your map and click on portals to travel instantly. Every command center comes with a built-in portal, giving you a constant fallback point.
10. Place Upgraded Structures Immediately When you unlock advanced versions of walls, turrets, or other buildings, there’s no need to build the base version and then upgrade. Simply hold ALT while placing, and you can build the upgraded versions from the get-go, saving both time and resources.
11. Keep the Research Rolling Many upgrades for your mech suit—from HP boosts to speed mods—are available early in the tech tree and don’t take long to unlock. These can drastically improve your survivability and mobility, especially as enemy waves get stronger. Prioritize them early.
12. Get the Spear ASAP One of the standout weapons early in the game is the spear. It offers excellent reach, high damage, and applies a frost debuff that slows enemies. It excels at crowd control against smaller enemies while giving you a mobility edge against bigger ones. Unlock and craft it as soon as possible.
