Welcome to your first steps into Slime Rancher, a relaxing yet delightfully chaotic first-person farming game where you raise slimes, harvest plorts (slime poop), and turn your modest little patch of alien land into a slime-powered empire. If you’re just beginning your ranching journey and want a casual but detailed walkthrough on setting up your farm effectively, this guide walks you through the early days, hybrid slimes, food production, and even tar outbreaks.
Why Slime Rancher?
Even if you’re used to action-packed games, Slime Rancher has a surprising charm. The relaxing gameplay, adorable bouncing slimes, and simple progression system make it a cozy yet engaging experience. What begins as a game you pick up for someone else can quickly become your own guilty pleasure.
Getting Started: What You Need First
When you start a new game, you’ll be introduced to your base ranch. Begin by setting up three Corrals—these will house your slimes. Use your Vacpack to suck in wild slimes and shoot them into the pens. Early on, you’ll deal mostly with Pink Slimes, the generalist type that eat anything. Though low in value, they’re essential for understanding the basics.
Every Corral can and should be upgraded. Essential upgrades include:
- High Walls – Prevent slime escapes.
- Auto-Feeder – Dispenses food over time.
- Plort Collector – Saves you from entering the corral.
- Solar Shield – Critical for light-sensitive slimes like Phosphor Slimes.
- Music Box – Helps calm agitated slimes.
Start with High Walls and Auto-Feeder as your first investments. Later, adapt based on the type of slime in each pen.
Turning Poop Into Profit: Understanding Plorts
Every slime produces plorts when fed. These are the game’s currency. Head to the Plort Market to sell them. Prices fluctuate daily, so it’s good to keep an eye on market trends. Early in the game, you’ll mostly have Pink, Rock, and Tabby plorts. Here’s a quick profit tip:
- Rock Plorts generally have higher value than Pink Plorts.
- Tabby Plorts are also valuable but require meat.
- Phosphor Plorts are a great upgrade target once you have a Solar Shield.
To make the most of plorts, keep slimes well-fed. If they start drooling, they’re hungry and won’t produce anything. Use Auto-Feeders to keep food constantly flowing.
Hybrid Slimes: Early Game Largo Strategy
Largo slimes are hybrids formed when one slime eats another type’s plort. A Pink Rock Largo, for instance, combines the Pink Slime’s easy diet with the higher-value Rock Plort output. Hybrids save space and increase plort production—but be careful not to introduce a third plort type or you’ll create Tar Slimes.
Early good Largo combos:
- Pink + Rock – Eats anything and yields higher value plorts.
- Pink + Tabby – Simplifies the need for meat.
- Pink + Phosphor – Use Solar Shield in the corral to house them safely.
Just outside the ranch you’ll find wild slimes, plorts, and food. Use this area to gather materials for your first hybrids. You’ll also encounter wild Largos—good practice for managing them later.
Food Production: Building Your Gardens and Coops
Your farm includes 8 plots. After dedicating 3 to Corrals, use the rest for food. Early suggestions:
- Carrot Garden – Universal veggie that works for many slime types.
- Fruit Tree (e.g. Q-Berries) – Especially useful for Phosphor Slimes.
- Chicken Coop – For meat-eaters like Tabby Slimes.
As you grow, consider swapping crops. Q-Berries, Heart Beets, and Mint Mangoes are higher-tier favorites and double plort yield when matched with the right slime. Upgrading your farms with Sprinklers increases crop production speed.
Managing Chaos: Tar Slimes and the Incinerator
If slimes eat a third type of plort, they transform into Tar Slimes—dangerous, multiplying threats that devour everything. Early on, before you’ve separated slime types and upgraded corrals, you may run into outbreaks. Having an Incineratorcan help clear out unwanted slimes or manage emergencies.
But once you stabilize your ranch with upgraded pens and proper feeding, you may want to dismantle the Incinerator and replace it with another Corral or Garden.
Expanding the Ranch and Exploring Further
Slime Rancher’s map is split into various regions, but initially only the ranch and nearby areas are accessible. You’ll spot slime gates leading to new zones—these require Slime Keys to unlock, which are obtained by feeding giant Gordo Slimesuntil they pop. Focus on building up your farm, then take time to explore.
- Gordo Slimes only eat certain food types. Make sure you bring plenty.
- Use the map and environmental cues to navigate to new areas.
Nighttime Strategy: Capturing Phosphor Slimes
Phosphor Slimes only appear at night. They despawn in sunlight unless housed in a corral with a Solar Shield. Once captured and housed properly, they become an excellent plort source, especially when hybridized with Pink Slimes.
Their preferred food is fruit, so a Q-Berry Garden near their pen is ideal. Combining their fruit-only diet with the Pink Slime’s eat-anything trait creates flexible Largo options.
Ranch Maintenance and Missions
Inside your ranch house, you can access Star Mail, providing story elements and occasional hints. The Mission Boardoutside gives daily objectives like supplying plorts or food in exchange for rewards. These missions are optional but help diversify your farm and offer side objectives.
For example, you may be asked to deliver:
- 5 Hen Hens
- 1 Rooster
In return, you might receive money, plorts, or rare fruit. Use these missions to experiment with new foods and slimes.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Expand Too Quickly
It’s tempting to collect all the slimes, grow every crop, and expand rapidly—but resist the urge. Early overexpansion leads to food shortages, escaped slimes, and chaos. Stick to three Corrals and four food plots at first. Stabilize, earn money, and build slowly.
As you progress:
- Replace carrots with higher-tier crops like Heart Beets or Q-Berries.
- Consider building a Silo to store excess crops.
- Invest in Corral upgrades before adding new slime types.
With that, you’re ready to create a balanced, beautiful ranch and dive deeper into the world of Slime Rancher. Keep an eye out for advanced guides coming soon—and remember: ranch smart, feed well, and never underestimate a bouncing blob of joy.
