The procedurally generated world of Noita is full of surprises, and one of the more complex systems that influences each run is the presence of biome modifiers. There are 22 different random modifiers that can be applied to biomes along the main path of progression, in addition to several fixed modifiers that define side areas like the snowy wasteland, desert surface, or magical temple. Some modifiers are fairly harmless or even helpful, while others can make survival extremely difficult, especially early in the game. This guide covers all known random biome modifiers, how they affect gameplay, and what to look out for.

Common and Fixed Modifiers

Some modifiers are hardcoded into specific side biomes. The desert surface is always hot, the snowy wasteland is always freezing, and the magical temple is perpetually shrouded in darkness. However, when it comes to the main progression route, each biome can receive one of many random modifiers—some common, some incredibly rare.

Humid

The “humid” modifier slows projectiles and makes it difficult to start fires. Slime balls and similar spells may become nearly stationary. While this can reduce fire-based hazards, it also makes ranged combat trickier. This is the default state of fungal caverns, though it can be overridden by another random modifier.

Darkness

This modifier causes the fog of war to reappear behind you as you move, making it difficult to keep track of explored areas. It’s always active in the Lookie Layer biome, limiting visibility and disorienting navigation.

High Gravity / Low Gravity

High gravity makes levitation more difficult and adds weight to your projectiles. Low gravity does the opposite—it allows higher jumps and straighter spell trajectories, especially useful for long-range combat and spell control builds.

Ionized Air (Conductive)

One of the most dangerous modifiers, this fills the biome with plasma beam machines and makes everything electrically conductive. Expect extra traps and electric enemies. You’ll need water resistance or anti-electric strategies to survive. Seed 46 has a conductive Mines biome if you’re curious—or feeling masochistic.

Hot

Water evaporates, snow and ice melt, and water barrels can be found scattered throughout. It can be particularly dramatic if combined with material shifts like transforming water into lava. It adds danger but also opens up terrain manipulation opportunities.

Lucrative / Extremely Lucrative

These rare modifiers dramatically increase the number of gold veins. “Lucrative” gives you more gold across most main biomes (excluding Heisi Base), while “Extremely Lucrative” is limited to the Mines, Collapsed Mines, Coal Pits, and to a lesser extent, the Snowy Depths. Seed 1091 (lucrative Mines) and seed 28214 (extremely lucrative Mines) are good showcases.

Plant-Infested

Vines sprouting poison berries invade the biome, and the variant dark swamp liquid appears. This can be a pain to traverse and adds damage over time dangers. It does not appear in snowy depths, Heisi Base, or underground jungle.

Cozy

Purely aesthetic, this modifier fills the biome with decorative furniture and increases mimic spawn chances. It’s a fun but mostly harmless effect.

Booby-Trapped

Scattered explosive mines appear throughout the biome. One bad step and you could be dead. Exercise extreme caution.

Perforated

The biome becomes riddled with worm tunnels and open caverns. There’s a high chance for small and medium worms, with a rare chance for giant worms. Travel becomes easier vertically but may trigger holy mountain breaches and god anger. This does not occur in certain structured biomes like the Vault or Temple of the Art.

Spooky

Gravestones appear, and some enemies come accompanied by ghostly sparkbolt-shooting companions. They’re small and annoying but add a fun thematic element.

Gravity Fields

Both gravity-enhancing and anti-gravity fields appear (white and red circles). These can interfere with or enhance combat depending on how they’re used. Planning your attacks around them is key.

Fungal Spores

The area turns green, and dangerous blue fungus pods start spawning. Fungoid enemies and chaotic blob swarms appear. Extremely volatile. Does not appear in snowy depths, Heisi Base, or fungal caverns.

Flooded

Excessive water floods the biome. Swamplings wielding cursed projectiles become more common. Expect pipes and dripping hazards. Appears in mines, collapsed mines, and jungle.

Gas-Flooded

Toxic gas leaks from broken pipes, and if you damage them, they can release acid. Bring water and keep an eye out for fire hazards. Fire spreads fast in these environments.

Shielded

Enemies may spawn with personal shields, and shield modules can appear in the terrain. This makes combat harder unless you exploit the generators. Cannot appear in cold pits or snowy depths.

Invisibility

This makes some enemies almost completely invisible. Not found in the Mines, but particularly dangerous in late biomes like the Vault where powerful enemies lurk.

Wormy

Spawns many worms, though without the preset tunnels of the perforated variant. Expect chaos, explosions, and potential god anger from holy mountain breaches—especially problematic in early game areas like the Coal Pits.

Biome-Specific Unlockable Modifiers

The final two modifiers only appear after creating a Sun or a Dark Sun, meaning you’ll need to complete the sunseed quest.

Glowing Fields

This rare and useful modifier generates glowing protective fields where nothing (including enemies) can be harmed. It’s a double-edged sword—you’re safe, but so are the monsters. Lure them out if you want to kill them.

Ominous Atmosphere

If this message appears, prepare for doom. The biome is filled with unstable orbs that expand into giga black holes. These can destroy terrain and enemies alike—or kill you instantly if you’re not careful. In the right hands, though, they can be weaponized.

Final Thoughts

Out of all modifiers, Extremely Lucrative stands out as the most desirable, while Ionized is arguably the deadliest, especially early on. Knowing what to expect—and how to adapt to each biome’s quirks—can make or break your run.

Which one do you dread the most? Which is your favorite? Noita’s biome system ensures no two runs are ever the same—embrace the chaos, and happy spelunking.
