Welcome to a comprehensive guide on planting in Myth of Empires. This guide walks you through how to set up your farm, manage planting stages, and get the most out of your crops — especially when aiming for high-end crafting materials like vegetable oil and iron weapons. Whether you’re just venturing past the Bronze Age or deep into resource automation, this guide is your next step forward.
Getting Started with Planting
At early levels, you’ll rely on crude planters unlocked at level 16 under the Cultivation tab. These are small plots ideal for low-quality crops. However, once you reach around level 38, you can construct proper farming structures where NPCs can automate the farming process, vastly improving efficiency.
If you enjoy farming and want to speed up your progress, allocate all five expertise points into the Planting skill early. This makes a noticeable difference in how quickly you level it up.

Finding and Preparing Farmland
You can place planters near your base or locate pre-built Farmland zones — circular patches of mud marked on the map. These offer better soil conditions and built-in structure. You’ll find farms in different sizes, but smaller fields are faster to prep manually.
Once you’ve claimed a field, your first task is adjusting soil porosity. Most seeds require 30% porosity, but always check the requirements:
- Low Quality Rice: 30% porosity, high moisture, needs green manure, organic and ash fertilizer
- Soybeans: 30% porosity, moderate moisture
- Sorghum: 30% porosity, lower moisture
Use a hoe to increase soil porosity — each swing raises it by 0.5 to 0.75% on small plots. Large fields take longer, increasing only by 0.14% per swing.
Planting Seeds
With porosity at 30% (or as required by your crop), equip your seeds in a hotbar slot. Stand over your field and left-click to plant. Ensure you’re using the proper field for seed quality — common and fine seeds require farmland over crude planters.
After planting, the game begins to draw water and fertilizer from the plot:
- Watch water levels carefully, especially for rice, which consumes it rapidly.
- Fertilizers include:
- Green Manure (for rapid base growth)
- Organic Fertilizer (made from composting)
- Ash Fertilizer (from burned materials)
Unspent fertilizer stock starts high but will decrease with usage, so keep it replenished before each cycle.
Supplying Water and Fertilizer
Water is delivered via Wooden Barrels or Large Barrels:
- Stand over the field and activate the barrel to add water.
- Wooden barrels = +200 water each; Large barrels = +500.
To refill, take the barrels to a river and use them in water until filled. It’s best to stockpile and use a cart to transport.
Fertilizer is applied the same way — add it to your bar, walk onto the plot, and activate. Aim to apply enough fertilizer early to avoid any yield penalties.
Managing Crop Growth
Growth takes time. For example, low-quality rice took approximately an hour to mature in testing. Monitor water and fertilizer during this period to avoid hitting zero, which negatively impacts crop quality.
You can achieve three harvest qualities:
- Weak Harvest: Minimal output, low chance of seed return
- Medium Harvest: Decent yield
- Perfect Harvest: Maximum yield, full seed return
Perfect yields are achieved by ensuring continuous water and fertilizer availability throughout the growing cycle.
Harvesting and Field Maintenance
When the crops are fully grown, simply walk over and collect them. With a perfect yield, you get back 100% of the seeds, which is essential for rare and high-tier plants.
After harvesting, destroy the leftover husks manually — this accelerates fertilizer regeneration on the plot, making the next cycle quicker.
If your current plot is depleted or needs rest, switch to another one while the first recovers. Keep multiple plots in rotation to maintain planting efficiency.
Final Tips
- Use small fields for early efficiency, then expand into larger ones once you automate with NPCs.
- Always read the seed’s tooltip — porosity, moisture, and fertilizer needs vary.
- Stockpile seeds by gathering bushes with a sickle. They’re light but take up inventory space, so keep them sorted in storage.
- Build your farm near a water source if possible, or prepare for multiple transport trips.
- Avoid weak yields whenever possible — always top off water and fertilizers before planting.
With this system in place, you’ll be well-equipped to farm efficiently, produce higher-tier resources, and progress into the advanced stages of Myth of Empires crafting.
