In the intricate world of Soulmask, establishing a reliable livestock system is key to a sustainable and thriving settlement. This guide walks you through the full process of taming capybaras and turkeys—two early-game animals that will enhance your base with meat, bones, and hides. We’ll also cover how to safely transport them, prepare enclosures, and set up an efficient care and breeding system.

Setting Up the Infrastructure

Before even setting out to tame animals, your base needs to be ready. Make sure you’ve already established your farming, cooking, crafting, and pen areas. Specifically, build the following:

  • Capybara Coop
  • Turkey Coop
  • Breeding Farm
  • Caretaker Station (Assign a character like Era to handle animal care duties)

You should also place feeding troughs and water bins near the pens, ensuring your animals can thrive once tamed. With all of this in place, you’re ready to begin.

What You Need for Taming

The process requires a few essential items:

  • Medium Traps for capybaras
  • Small Traps for turkeys
  • Bait Items:
    • Pumpkins for capybaras
    • Locusts and nuts for turkeys

Optional but helpful:

  • Bandages (for self-healing during wild encounters)
  • Weapons and shield (to fend off predators like jaguars and crocodiles)

Taming Capybaras

Start by scouting the edges of rivers and watering holes—these are the common spawn zones for capybaras. Your primary target should always be babies, as they’re much easier to tame. Here’s the best method:

  1. Separate the Baby: Scare the baby away from the adults. If needed, eliminate the parents.
  2. Place the Trap: Position a medium trap in the baby’s path.
  3. Add Pumpkin Bait: Drag a pumpkin into the trap and move away.
  4. Wait: If the baby is alerted, it might hesitate. Back off and let it wander into the trap.

Be aware of the environment. Jaguars, anacondas, and even piranhas may interfere. You’ll sometimes have to reset the trap due to misalignment or terrain conflicts. Persistence is key.

You can also set traps near known spawn points and come back later—they often walk into traps naturally over time.

Transporting Tamed Animals

Once captured, you’ll need to escort the animal back to base. Ideally, set traps relatively close to your settlement. Later, you can craft extended saddles and use llamas to help carry animals in baskets. While alpacas don’t offer this feature, llamas do, and they’re located just north of your standard area.

Placing Animals in Pens

At the pen:

  1. Open the side gate.
  2. Lead the animal in.
  3. Close the gate.
  4. Let your caretaker handle feeding and development.

Animals begin to grow and settle into the environment, eventually becoming usable for resources or breeding.

Taming Turkeys

The method for taming turkeys is nearly identical to that for capybaras. Again, focus on babies. Look around watering holes that also spawn turkeys.

  1. Use Small Traps.
  2. Place Locusts or Nuts inside.
  3. Watch Out for Adult Turkeys: Adults can interfere by eating bait.
  4. Use Multiple Traps: This increases your chances of success.

Like capybaras, turkey babies will eventually wander into traps if you’re patient. Sometimes you’ll capture the wrong creature (e.g., a scarlet macaw)—reset and try again.

Feeding and Breeding

Inside the pen, you can fine-tune how animals are cared for:

  • Assign caretakers like Era.
  • Configure feeding settings to use everything except high-priority ingredients like canoa and cashews.
  • Use specialized animal food (like capybara feed) to maximize efficiency.
  • Recommended feed rate: 70%.

Once you have both male and female animals, breeding will begin naturally. Keep checking the pens and protect your setup from predators and wandering animals like alpacas or jaguars.

Recap and Final Tips

  • Use medium traps + pumpkins for capybaras, small traps + locusts/nuts for turkeys.
  • Isolate babies, avoid combat where possible.
  • Set traps at known spawn points and return later.
  • Bring home animals safely—close to base is best until you have llamas.
  • Caretaker setup is essential for passive growth and breeding.
  • Avoid feeding high-value food items unless necessary.

With this system, you’ll soon have a renewable source of meat, hides, and bones. Scale up by trapping multiple animals at once, and expand your pens as needed. Stay alert, stay safe—and watch out for jaguars in the bushes.

Happy taming!
