Whether you’re completely new to Insurgency: Sandstorm or just coming back after a break, these 20 beginner tips will give you the edge you need to start strong. While some advice might feel intuitive, there are countless details that separate the casual player from someone who can confidently dominate the battlefield. These tips are presented in no particular order, but together they build a strong foundation for any new player.
1. Master the Gunplay Through Domination
The fastest way to get familiar with Sandstorm‘s unique shooting mechanics and game flow is to dive into Domination mode. It’s a PVP environment packed with nonstop action, allowing you to spawn instantly after dying and try out a wide range of weapons. Since matches are short and dense, you can get more practice in less time. While Co-op mode can be helpful for understanding map layouts, it won’t give you the fast-paced, unpredictable combat experience that PVP offers.

2. Mute the Ringing—Or Don’t
Many players find the “ringing in your ears” effect extremely annoying, especially after loud explosions or sustained gunfire. Luckily, this effect can be turned off in the settings. Still, some players opt to leave it on for immersion or just out of habit. Either way, knowing you have the option is a game-changer for your comfort.
3. Customize Player Colors
Spotting allies in a heated moment can be tricky, but you can tweak player colors in your settings for easier identification. Whether you want a clean tactical look or something that pops, making your teammates stand out visually helps reduce friendly fire and streamlines communication.
4. Dress for the Map
Cosmetic choices aren’t just fashion statements—they can literally get you killed. Bright outfits on snow maps or dark uniforms in desert terrain make you an easy target. Instead, create a few outfits suited for different environments. Camouflage is functional, not just aesthetic.
5. Ditch the Full Auto—Go Semi
In long-range engagements, full-auto fire will ruin your accuracy. Switching to semi-auto mode drastically improves precision and conserves ammo. While experienced players might control full-auto recoil with practice, the vast majority of fights at medium-to-long range are won by players using controlled, accurate shots.
6. Open Doors Quietly
Sound plays a huge role in Sandstorm, and loudly bursting through a door gives away your position. Instead, aim down sights while opening doors to do it silently. This technique is especially useful during flanks or stealthy pushes through buildings.
7. Crouch for Better Control
Crouching significantly reduces weapon recoil, giving you tighter shot groupings and quicker follow-up shots. It also makes you a smaller target, increasing your survivability. This is a habit worth drilling into your muscle memory.
8. Understand Staged Reloading
Unlike some other shooters, Sandstorm has staged reloading. If you interrupt the reload process midway, your weapon may still be unusable. This can easily get you killed if you’re unaware of how it works, so be sure to let the animation fully play out—or know the cost of canceling it.
9. Quick Reload Comes at a Cost
Double-tapping the reload button lets you reload faster, but it drops the remaining rounds in your magazine. It’s great in a tight spot, but if you’re always doing this, you’ll burn through your ammo reserves much faster.
10. Molotovs Are Not Always a Wall
At full health, you can sprint through a molotov without dying immediately. This trick allows for surprise flanks or last-minute captures, especially when the enemy assumes the fire will deter any push. It’s risky but highly effective when timed right.
11. Lighten Your Load
Every piece of gear you add increases your weight, making you slower and easier to hit. Evaluate whether you need heavy armor or extra gadgets. Sometimes agility and speed offer better survivability than protection.
12. Let Your Ears Guide You
Audio awareness is a top-tier skill in Sandstorm. Footsteps, reloads, suppressed weapons, and even coughs in smoke can all give away an enemy’s location. The best players win fights before they even start—just by knowing where the enemy will be.
13. Think Before Using Voice Chat
Be careful with in-game voice communication. Enemies nearby can hear you, even if you’re using team radio. If you’re calling out positions or coordinating flanks, consider staying silent or relocating first.
14. Change Position Often
Getting multiple kills from one spot feels great—until your victims return for revenge. Change your position after every few kills to stay unpredictable. This doesn’t mean you should sprint all over the map, but even shifting to another angle within the same objective can be enough.
15. Equip the Quick Draw Grip
If you rely heavily on grenades or secondary weapons, the Quick Draw grip is a must-have. For just one point, it significantly speeds up weapon-switching animations, giving you more flexibility mid-fight.
16. Master Smoke Usage
Smokes are one of the most powerful tools for attacking objectives. However, they must be used correctly. Throw them close to enemy positions to block their vision and give your team safe passage. Avoid deploying them near your own lines, as this can disorient your teammates and help the enemy.
17. Use Laser Sights with Caution
Laser sights offer improved hip-fire accuracy and quick target acquisition, but they also give away your position. Enemies can spot your beam and trace it back to you. Consider turning them off unless absolutely necessary.
18. Check Your Magazines
Holding down the reload button shows how many magazines you have left and gives you an approximate round count per mag. This is an excellent way to keep track without constantly reloading.
19. Always Stay Behind Cover
This might seem obvious, but cover usage cannot be overstated. The difference between being exposed for two seconds versus four can be life or death. Use everything—from crates to door frames—to shield your movement.
20. Review Your Replays
Want to level up quickly? Watch your own replays. Analyze your deaths, positioning, and decision-making. You’ll learn from your mistakes and also from the tactics your enemies used against you. Watching how top players move, hold angles, and react under pressure offers insights no guide can fully teach.
Insurgency: Sandstorm can feel overwhelming at first, but these tips will help pave the way for more confident and effective gameplay. Keep practicing, stay sharp, and remember—survival often comes down to awareness, movement, and smart decisions more than raw aim. Good luck out there, and keep adapting as you go.
